This must have been one of the nicest zoos I have ever seen in Europe!
The first thing that stands out is the huge amount of space that most animals live in, especially in the Alaska and the Africa areas . They have paid a lot of attention for details in order to make you feel like you are actually walking in that particular part of the world.
There might not be so much variety in animals as in other major zoos, but the fact that they have an enormous habitat compensates this apparent flaw.
Restaurants and catering is pretty basic (French fries, sausage, ice cream, beer and soda), but especially the restaurant located in the Africa area is beautifully located. It makes you feel like you're in the hills overlooking the zebras in the open plains and savannas of East Africa.
One word of warning, information is only in the German language, and (as a consequence ?) I have only seen German tourists so far.

This zoo might be one of those hidden gems, still waiting to be discovered by tourists from other countries. Definitely worth a visit!
There is more than enough parking place, and the zoo is easily reached by public transport from the main train station in Gelsenkirchen.

Had a great day out here, it was very hot on the day we visited, so some of the enclosures were very smelly. Out of the 3 sections (Alaska, Africa and Asia) my favourite was Alaska and seeing the Bears play with each other. My least favourite section was Asia as it didn't seem like too many animals could be seen, or maybe they were just hiding from the heat.
loved the boat trip (just under 20 minutes)
I would advise taking your own refreshments if possible. Food and drinks are very expensive and very average. There were some nicer looking sandwiches from the shop in the middle of the three areas... If you don't want stale fries, or greasy stuff I would recommend a sandwich from here.
there is also an annoying rule on drinks where you HAVE to pay an extra €2 for your drink in a souvenir cup ( if you want one or not) then later you have to return the cup to get your money back... This leaves you carrying round a cup once your drink has finished! Very sneaky ploy by the zoo to make even more money out of visitors!
Overall though couldn't fault the zoo, animals looked happy and well cared for. The place is clean, and I love that you follow one path the whole way round so no chance to get lost or miss anything.

The Zoom Erlebniswelt (Gelsenkirchen Zoo) is possibly the best Zoo we have been to in our travels. The interaction and the closeness to the animals is spectacular as well as the interactive rides that they supplied was worth more than the 12 euro to enter the gate of the Zoo. If you are in Gelsenkirchen, you should pay the Zoo a visit. We also went just after the big storms that hit Germany, even with a couple of the enclosures closed, it still rated as the best Zoo that we have ever been to, well done to the staff at Gelsenkirchen Zoo.

Here you can spent a whole day with your family and explore the wildlife of different continents in one go. A most desirable experience for the whole family at a very reasonably price.

This is a lovely zoo- the enclosures are beautiful and look authentic. The animals look healthy and well cared for with room to move about. We loved that they have a full range of the big animals including hippos, brown bears and polar bears that you don’t get to see at every zoo.
The food was not bad- just be aware that you need cash as you go around the zoo as there are no card machines.
Throughout the zoo there are loads of areas for kids to have breakout time and play- just enough that they have somewhere to run about and climb and then get back to the animal watching.
A particular favourite of ours was the African river boat ride.
We were there on a Saturday in July and there was plenty of space for parking, seating in cafes and restaurants. We didn’t queue long for the boat (5mins), no queue for lunch, plenty of seating in the shade and no crowds around the animals. Compared to other attractions we have been to , this was a lovely surprise.
We travelled out of our way to go to this zoo and were pleased we did. I would definitely visit again if in the area.

Parc is oke parking is not organized. Enterance fee for the park to high. Service point people are absolutely not friendly. I think they are even rude. Toilets are very dirty and nobody is cleaning it. Advice they should train the staff to be very friendly and service oriented!!

Zoom ist simply fantastic. We loved the fact that there are plenty of cool playgrounds and play corners for children amongst enclosures. The animals also seem happy enough and well taken care of. We had to miss Asia because we and the children simply were too tired so we will be back soon to continue explore what we missed.

It's such a great zoo! I love the themes of the park! You need about 4-5 hours to do the whole zoo. Its really big, so bring comfy shoes. During Winter the Africa park is closed because its too cold for the animals to be outside. Worth going!
Theres an igloo stimulator in the Alaska park, definitely try it if you don't get motion sickness.

Me and my son (3) went there during the christmas break and had a wonderful time. He had a blast. The entree fee was fair. The zoo consists of 3 parts representing the 3 continents Alaska, Africa and Asia. After the entry you can pick which continent you want to visit. Once you entered a path you are guided through the different enclosures and end up at the intersection where you can choose to enter another continent. I liked the roundtrip-concept. The ways were wide and stroller-friendly. If the weather conditions are bad there is huge tropical zone in Asia with a huge indoor playground. The only point to criticize here is that parents can not follow their children on this playground because it is made for kids.
The prices for food are also fair. We had some french fries and a Burger in the restaurant.
The animals can be seen quite closely because the enclosures are nicely constructed. I have never seen an ice bear that close. It jumped into the water and we were looking through a window on the bottom of this pool. So suddenly there weren't more than 30 cm between us and the bear. Awesome!
Once you finished watching animals, playing on the playground and eating and drinking you can visit a more urban part of the zoo with pigs, horses, donkeys and so on. All in all I can recommend this zoo to all families. You can even take your dog with you if you like!

it has three main sectors, Alaskan, Asian and African.
it was December 26th 2016, so it was pretty cold, make sure to bring gloves and jackets since you will be walking outdoors for most of the 4 hours visit to the place.
the Alaskan section was perfect and so was the Asian but unfortunately the African was deserted because of the cold.
you will walk much so make sure you are prepared.
also the souvenir shop has some good items so make sure each person has 10 euros to spare there.
