Charming small town
Sep 2019
Charming town with lots of traditional buildings. Lots of restaurants. We went on a warm sunny day and our young kids loved playing in the park - which is an island in the middle of the river that runs through the town.
I’d definitely go back.

Just a small town
Sep 2018 • Family
We have been there on Sunday so the shops were closed. Instead, we took a walk through the town, saw two/three old churches and walked by the river. The city itself is rather average but the green patch by the river is truly enchanting. However, it's not a place where I wish I could come back to (one visit is enough).

An escape from the business of Essen.

Werden is a charming small town with pretty buildings and small cafes. The river runs along the edge which gives it a somewhat relaxed feel. We really loved it.

Relaxing afternoon
May 2018 • Friends
I did not walk around the town but rather focussed on walking around the lake. Very relaxing amongst nice big trees, wind off the lake, and found a very nice restaurant to eat a Schnitzel. Very relaxing.

Come here and fall in love!

The atmosphere is delightfully romantic, the architecture outstandingly impressive, feel yourself transported into another century.
Bring MONEY. You'll need it. (But it's worth it.)

Not so special
Jan 2018 • Friends
The town of Werden, which is now a suburb of Essen, is exceptional because very few old buildings survived anywhere else in the heavily industrialised (and bombed) Ruhr area but, compared to other ‘old towns’, it is nothing special. There are some nice half-timbered houses in attractive little streets, but quite some ugly new constructions too. The ‘Old Town Hall’ (‘Altes Rathaus’ in German) isn’t as old as it may look, it was built in revival style in the early 20th century. Werden does have a few interesting churches. We visited the abbey church St. Ludgerus and found the attached museum very rewarding. There are nice nature walks around Werden but on a cold and rainy January afternoon that was not an option.

Presently and probably until October 2018 Werden may only be reached by bus or car. The quick S-train connection between Essen and Werden is suspended because it was unsafe. Coal mining activity between the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries in the area caused holes under the tracks, which are currently being filled up.

Difficult location
Nov 2017 • Business
We tried to visit this area but we couldn't. It was very difficult to find this. Either with GPS or not we drive around more than 30 minutes without success. Probably it was not a destination for night.

Cozy little town in the Ruhr valley
Jul 2016
Cozy little town at the Ruhr. Nice local center with many small shops, boutiques and restauarnts. Enjoy the lively scenary during saturday morning at the farmers market between the Basilika and Folkwang University. No cars in the pedestrian zone of the old town center - ideal for kids! Enjoy at least three different ice cream parlours with fantastic quality Kikas, Sorellis, and Dolce VIta. Many backeries and street cafes. Italien, Spanish, and international restaurants where you can sit outside at a nice and warm sumemr evening. Come and enjoy life!
