- JXXXRUnited Kingdom4,898 contributionsLarge Coal MineThe Zollverein Coal Mine is an inactive Coal mine located on the outskirts of Essen which has been converted into a park with museums. Overall this is an interesting area and would be highly recommended for those interested in photography or industrial history. However there is nothing truly stunning here so this is not must visit in itself.Visited September 2020Written October 26, 2020
- Peter BLillestrom, Norway12 contributions2 hour coal mining historyBooked "Über Kohle und Kumpel" to get a good overview of history, process, machinery, and people during the coal mining period. Knowledgeable guide that provide many facets of interesting stories about the complex. Tour was both inside and outside, dressing warm was needed at this time of year. There are a number of stairs to use but very doable for most people. For EUR 9,50 this was an interesting travel in time. Visited the nearby cafe for warm drinks afterwards. Plenty of free parking at the site.Visited February 2020Written March 7, 2020

The area also hosts the red dot museum with latest inventions in industrial design. A must see for everybody regardless of age.Visited June 2022Traveled with familyWritten July 10, 2022

We visited and walked the site and visited the museum.
The place is fascinating to visit given the sheer scale of the infrastructure. However it is let down particularly for international visitors by poor interpretation.
The site is free to explore, however whilst you can see the buildings etc. Trying to understand what these were isn't desperately easy. Maybe there is an app etc. But limited boards to explain.
The museum takes place in the MASSIVE coal washing building. You start up at 24m and work your way down to the ground floor. Sadly this means you have to endure two floors of nonsense showing random pictures of pictures across the Rhone valley of people's houses in the 1960's or a man's hat in a special presentation booth.
This is a shame as the bottom floor of the museum is rather good. This depicts the coal/industrial revolution across the years. However by the time you reach this floor it's kinda wasted as you are knackered.
I had to resort to Wikipedia to actually learn about the mine! Maybe the walking tour would have done this but sadly we didn't do that as it was incredibly hot and we were walked out after the museum.

UNESCO site with plenty for everyone. Be sure to take a guided tour and then wander at your leisure. Plenty for kids, a park, soccer golf and spots for food and drink. There are many options for tours and I recommend taking more than one in order to get a better understanding of why the mine is being preserved.

They are still re-opening/re-arranging areas of the old mines for the people. You can get on the terrain without paying a fee and just walk around. There is also a cycling path.
I would suggest to visit the museum. The very long escalator is a highlight itself. There is plenty to see. You can have a drink afterwards at the cafe. Plenty of parkingspaces. The area is also good accessable by train. Everywhere in Essen you see pictures of the Zollverein. Happy I finally got to meet it, in real life😉.

interesting and large location, needs improvement for international visitors. Website did not list times for english guided tour. You cannot get in near the mine without a tourguide. The english tour required a 2 hour wait. instead we did the museum. Was just okayish, the rurh museum hardly gave an idea of how the complex worked nor how working there was.

Visited here while on a Scenic River Cruise. Fantastic guide Wolfgang took us around the main complex and gave a very detailed informative description of what happened. It would have been a very busy place with no health and safety guidelines anywhere !. Such hard work as well. A few steps to climb inside but not too many. Well worth visiting and small cafe in reception area.

The Zollverein is easy to reach by public transport. Take a photo of the map on your way in or you could be lost forever! The area is absolutely huge- you can wander around entirely free seeing all the paths of the mine and coking plant. We wanted to see an exhibition in the Ruhr Museum on site. Finding our way to the entrance and to the ticket office several floors up was a major challenge! However if you do get there you can get a slightly better map.

Zollverein makes for an outstanding day trip. What I can't emphasize enough is the scale of the industrial complex. Research in advance the guided tour times. We didn't and ended up not going to this, and went to the Ruhr museum which is incorporated into the complex (the orange staircase worth the entry fee alone!). The staff we encountered were extremely helpful and spoke fluent English.

The Zeche Zollverein in Essen is a historical landmark. UNESCO Kulturerbe!!!
The whole area is a great place to discover how it might have been working so hard for coal! It is well developed and a great museum too. The caffe shop is unique . Friendly service all over!

Visited with friends and I must say it was an excellent trip. Stefan our guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. The size of some of the equipment is mind boggling and you really got a feel for what daily life for the miners must have been like

This is a great place to visit. Plenty to marvel at. The scale of the mine is mind blowing. Takes you back many years. Now an excellent visitor attraction. Plant of restaurants to choose from and always something going on.

Can I leave my luggage somewhere while I am enjoying the museum? :)

Essen, Germany77 contributions
Dear Carina,
I am afraid that my response will be too late for you. However, if it has not yet been answered I will try to help you. If I were you I would address the problem to the reception of the museum (+49 201 24681444). If they cannot cater for your needs, you can also use the luggage storage in the Essen Main Station and take the tram / subway from there to the premises of Zeche Zollverein. This is approx. a 15 minutes ride that costs less than € 3.- each way.
Regards, Ulrich

Ich denke nein, da es teilweise über alte, fragile Eisentreppen geht und durch antike Maschine spezielle, laute Geräusche präsentiert werden.Besser man teilt sich auf, einer bleibt mit dem Hund in der schönen Aussenanlage.

The entire complex/area on its own is free to walk around. The Ruhr museum has its own entrance prices that can be fouind easily if you google them, and of course the food and drinks at the restaurants are not for free as well. Have fun!

Hallo,
