Lifesaver Brunnen (fountain), by Niki de Saint Phalle, is part of a sculpture trail that runs along the pedestrian zone in the center of Duisburg. Locals use it as navigation landmark in the city center. Around, there are many stores, coffee shops, restaurants etc. Nice but does not worth changing your route just to see this bird statue

Would not be worth going out of your way to see but in main pedestrian area. Locals don't understand what it's about either!

It is right in the middle and I don't really get the point of this colorful statue there... that being said, not a big fan of modern art...

How do you write a review of a statue?

Part of the Duisburg 'sculpture mile', "Lifesaver" is a collaborative work, featuring a polychrome figure by Niki de Saint Phalle, atop a mechanism by Jean Tinguely.

It is one of the most expensive items in the mile of statues through the middle of Duisburg. I would recommend seeing all of them before you decide whether this one is the best. Personally, I find nothing to recommend this Saint Phalle figures, although they seem very popular in Germany.

There are many hidden gems in Duisburg; while the city itself is not as scenic as many others in the NRW region, Duisburg does own a stellar collection of 20th and 21st Century sculptures and artworks of other media. Case in point: Lifesaver is a functioning fountain by Niki St. Phalle and Jean Tinguely. For most residents and visitors, this fountain and many sculptures scattered throughout the city are just funny statues, but they are actually significant artworks that have been produced over the past century, all hidden in plain sight in humble Duisburg. As of July 2016, this artwork/ fountain has been repaired and back in function. I'm relatively new to the city myself, so I can't promise the fountain will keep operating into the colder months, but as of now, Lifesaver is turning round and round and spouting water almost every day of the week. I hope the sculpture cheers you up as you walk past it!

Was my first thought when I looked at it. I guess the winged thing is holding up a person? The colors are very nice, but I can't quite make up my mind whether I like it or not. Maybe it grows on you.

A big bird holding a big woman with a big bum. It's all very confusing to me. It's a good place to use as a landmark to see all the other spots in Duisburg downtown, but I wouldn't travel to Duisburg only to see this. The water is kinda murky and slimy looking - not sure why people let their kids and dogs go splashing in it. It's an okay place. Plenty of better things to do here tho.
