- JontheroadagainColchester, United Kingdom112 contributionsA Rhineland Cruise with SAGA on the Rex RheniWe went for a 7 day river cruise with Saga on the Rex Rheni, The staff on the boat were generally very attentive and we had a lovely time seeing some fantastic scenary, as we sailed from Koblenz and finished up back at Cologne. The cabins were okay, a bit cramped but kept very clean. We were a bit annoyed on our first night in the restaurant. We were a party of 3 and when we went for our evening meal we found that we could not get a table for 3 and ended up sitting on 2 differant tables. I expected that we would have dedicated tables for the trip, but that is not the case. When I asked about it, I was told that they wanted people to mix and therefore it was like being back at school where you had to line up early to make sure you got to sit together. A lot of other passengers that I spoke to also said that it was not ideal. What we did agree was that the range and quality of the food was good as was the selection of included drinks. We were kept entertained by the Saga rep, who was an ex member of "The Sweet" and had a good range of music across the decades in the evening as well as quizzes and banter during the day. The biggest problem that we encountered was on our way home on the Eurostar to London. We arrived at the station in Brussels, and after going through check in, everyone on the Saga cruise discovered that all thier prebooked seats on the train had been changed and, bearing in mind that a lot of people on the cruise were elderly and had disabilities, found that not only were they not seated together but were up to 18 carriages apart!! Talking to the Eurostar people was a total waste of time and there were no Saga people about to sort it. What the group had to do was get together and try to find what other seats people had and try to swap about, to get somewhere near your partner or group. This added a lot of stress to the trip and spoiled what was a nice break.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 12, 2023

First day leave on transfer coach at 4am to tour coach at stop24 board tour coach to complete journey to cologne to board ship at 10pm same day 18hrs Of travelling? The tour coach was a replacement due the original one had an accident, but when onboard and we had set off only to be told no tea or coffee or even water was available. So we travelled for six hours till they had to refuel and we had twenty minutes to stretch our legs and get a drink, then back onboard for another two hours during the whole journey from stop24 to destination in cologne no information other than no drinks onboard was passed on by the two drivers.on the plus side once onboard the MS Johann Strauss things took a turn for better will leave a separate review on the ship. Dreading the return trip it was no better apart from being able to visit duty free was a bonus and stil no drinks onboard.Sorry forgot to mention had to have cases ready for collection at 5am to leave for 6am with only a packed style lunch for breakfast.18hour return tripVisited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 5, 2023

The Johann Strauss is a very comfortable boat and the running comentary of the sites liesurely pass ing by on either side (like the Lorelei Rock and Remagen bridge remains was very informative. All things considered the company’s choices for destinations and curated excursions is above board. But then we only have two companies to compare. In fairness, the company that hosted our summer river cruise failed to deliver miserably. All told, I would rather string together an itinerary by land via planes, trains, and automobiles as we did on our backpacking tour of Europe many years ago. I provided feedback to the company and will certainly purchase their product again.Visited December 2023Traveled with friendsWritten January 22, 2024
- vanmoppess32 contributionsViking Ullur River Cruise- The best ever!!First let me say we have cruised many different brands but none compare to Viking! We cruised from Amsterdam to Basel on the Viking Ullur in April 2024. From the moment we arrived at the airport we were greeted by staff and then expertly taken to our hotel. From there after 2 nights we were again taken to our ship and then to our state room which was exceptionally laid out from the bathroom, shower and living area, to the bedroom with its own thermostat. As good as everything has been, including incredible meals and drinks, none of it compares to the staff!! The bartenders Desi, Armando, and Alex are genuinely the best, friendliest and greatest not only bar-tenders but waiters(waitress) ever. I’m not sure how Viking selects their employees but what ever they are doing, keep it up. Of course everyone else in the ship was superb as well but I don’t have room to write all their names. If you plan to take a River cruise, be sure it’s Viking. You will not be disappointed. We are definitely sailing them next year !!Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 21, 2024

My favorite white grape is Riesling then this day wine tasting it was all about me; first we visit a very special winery own by a retired American couple, and they decide to buy a property in the Mosel area and open a B&B and winery “Weingut H. Gindorf und Gästehaus”. After that one, we visit another special winery “Stair & Roses”,owned by a German family, we spend a few hrs wine tasting and enjoying the delicious wines the spectacular views and learning about the peaceful life alone the Rhine riverVisited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten May 26, 2024

Cruise Director Karen and Concierge Raoul (Mr Fixit!) did all they could to keep us informed and entertained and the crew were superb, efficiently serving us all with delicious food, plenty of it and lots of choice. It is of course their job but they were smiling, and made us feel welcome at all times, including those responsible for keeping the ship clean and tidy. The free tea/coffee/iced water station was kept very clean and fully stocked. There were off shore local guides (some better than others) who took us on walking tours of Koblenz, Rudesheim, Speyer, Strasbourg and Breisach (with audio sets provided so that we could hear the guide at all times) or we could just walk as we wished, or stay on board. Coach trips to Lake Titersee, the Black Forest and the mountains included on board guides. Rudesheim and Lake Titersee were very touristy but as tourists ourselves we can hardly complain! The last excursion to Lucerne (we only had an hour or so there and it was wet) and into the alps was a bit of a trial due to the long time spent travelling by coach/local train but the view was spectacular - we were fortunate to be there in bright sunshine. My friends and I have never been on a river cruise before and were really impressed. It was also the first cruise for lots of people on the ship, while others had done several trips through Riviera, and all the comments we heard were complimentary.Visited August 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 10, 2024

Transfers were very good albeit a long wait at the London Eurostar terminal. Staff onboard the Spirit of the Rhine were marvellous. Food was excellent and every meal was very well presented and served. Cabins were lovely and clean and well kept. The ship was spotless throughout. I would certainly recommend it to anyone.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 24, 2024

I left Scotland with boots and trews in winter for London , my suitcase went onto Eurowings flight from London Heathrow to Dusseldorf . But never arrived so I was left in the same clothes from Scotland and gala lunches / captains dinner /breakfasts still only same clothes . the cruise cost me £1,884 . I contacted Titan , they refused to compensate , my Insurance company BOOTS would only pay three quarters of my payment for tooth paste , spare under wear , etc. The airline Eurowings said you claimed too late, I tried to say because I tried with BOOTS insurance Titan etc and this took time to receive copies and then send to Eurowings. So no compensation for the loss enjoyment of a cruise . sitting in your cabin watching the river pass , so sad .

Just got off the Scenic Opal 10/11/2021. Well Scenic is not all inclusive anymore this was our 4th cruise with them. No transfers were provided as a matter of fact we were told that a car was going to pick us up from our hotel and nobody showed up luckily the dock was not far and we were able to walk. The cruise director Szilvia told us that she could not provide a transfer to the Basel train station as well at the end of the cruise. Again be careful Scenic is NOT all inclusive. The other staff was very helpful and nice. We also felt that we were rushed in the completion of our cruise - our cruise was to end on monday yet on saturday they put the luggage protectors on the ends of our bed, they took the robes from the rooms on sunday early, the hot tub was only finally working on Sunday, the cruise director was all business rarely interacted with guests on a more personal level, we just felt as if we were given the bums rush near the end of our cruise. We also wish they would incorporate more local cuisine in their meal plans, one lunch they did a German day and it was a big hit, wish they would do more of that.

Have just returned from a New Year cruise on the Danube with Ama waterways on their newest ship, the Ama Magna. (Interesting to note that the bad reviews in this section are not for Ama, they are for other cruising companies on the Danube.) It would be hard to find anything negative to say about our trip. The boat was beautiful and tastefully decorated for the season, the staff were attentive to the last degree, the food and drink was of an exceptionally high standard and the organisation for trips with guides and Silent Vox boxes excellent. The cabins were large and well equipped. Every eventuality had been thought through and a huge effort been made to ensure we had a wonderful trip.
We will certainly think of using this company again.

Recently had cruise on MS Alina (Phoenix Reisen) which when we boarded already had crew members (isolated) with suspected COVID19. We were not informed and the ship sailed to Amsterdam, Hoorne & Ghent where we were told the Infection was confirmed and that the ship would travel overnight to Dordrecht and that we’d be have to leave the ship in Dordrecht. 200 passengers put at risk.
One crew member working in passenger areas would not wear a mask and other crew members had masks which only covered mouth whilst passengers had to wear a mask at all times in alleyways and when talking to crew. 200 passengers we’re returned to Cologne and then allowed to disperse across Europe and, possibly, the world with no further advice or testing.

BEWARE OF THE VIKING.
As 2 senior pensioners we saved for our 80th birthday to go on a river cruise. On 29th April 2022 we paid $4000 deposit for a Viking Cruise in September 2023, 17 months away. On 26th August 2022 not in the best of health we decided to cancel the trip so as not to inconvenience the other passengers or crew, this was 13 months in advance of our departure.
As the booking was made with one phone call, we expected to have a minimal booking charge as Viking site which states cancellation fee would loss of $500 each, but they kept the whole $4000 deposit. The moral here is Don’t Book until you are 100% sure you can go and leave it to the last minute. The Insurance cover was only for the dates of the cruise but after several phone calls they returned 95% because there was no risk involved. On writing to the Aust.General. Manager and the Chairman of Viking they did not even have the decency of reply.

I received a letter regarding my up coming Christmas Market River Cruise on the Rhine departing 11/26/2024. I booked my cruise on 6/17/24 having to completely pay for the expensive trip 12,000. I just now get a notice that they have changed the trip to eliminating the Christmas Markets. They have my exact trip on a different day 12/22024 which has alot of availablity however to change the date they want 3,000 more. There attitude is take it or leave it. May 3000 more for what I already paid them for or take a refund on the 12,000 that they have had in their possession since June. All I am asking for is to give me what I purchased and they wont budge an inch. I though Viking was an upfront company horrible.

We were picked up by a Chauffer and taken to Bristol Airport. - Schiphol - Zurich transfer to Spirit of the Rhine at Basel.
We had a Deluxe French Balcony Cabin - 338 Upper Floor, situated far of the ship next to Rheinfels Restaurant. Cabins lovely and clean supplied with lovely toiletries- shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, handcream, tissues. Beautiful room but unfortunately above the engine, so it was difficult to sleep as going through locks it was very noisy and vibrated.
All - Inclusive food and drink presentation and service was excellent.
This was our first river cruise and first Saga Cruise. Unfortunately there was only one other couple in their sixties, the age group of the other passengers was 75+.
Day 1 The first town was Breisach a small town, not far to walk from where the ship was moored.
Day 2 - Strasbourg we did the extended tour which is included, so gives you a few hours to explore. The Cathedrale Notre - Dame has a beautiful Astronomical Clock.
Day 3 - Heidelberg we did a trip to the castle which had the worlds largest barrel inside and town.
Day 4 - In Koblenz there is a cable car that goes up to a war memorial. There are lovely views from the top, we were unlucky to have cloud and drizzle.
Day 5 - Dusseldorf a walking tour was taken through busy streets with football supporters.
Day 6 & 7 Moored overnight in Amsterdam. We paid for the Saga River Cruise which was very good and took you past interesting landmarks, well worth doing. Flight from Schiphol Airport to Bristol then Chauffer to the house.
We were unlucky with the weather for middle May. Celebrated our Ruby Anniversary with lovely food and drink. We enjoyed the Cruise which was different to other holidays but will delay going on a Saga Cruise the age mix might be better on a big ship.

Finally managed to get a few days away and enjoy a cruise along the Rhine. We booked this cruise in March 2020 but naturally due to the pandemic we had to cancel and postpone our trip until this December. I have cruised around the Caribbean but this was my second River cruise. I have to say it was a pure delight.TUI’s Move to river cruising in my view is the right direction. From the flight to joining the ship enjoying the delights of the Rhine to disembarkation we had simply a great time. The ship was only at a little over 50% occupation which may have made it a more enjoyable experience A little bit more intimate and we are able to get to know more of our fellow passengers. If there is a criticism it is simply in so much as one it was a limited options for vegetarians/vegans although this may have been simply a language issue but it would’ve been nice to have seen more options readily available for those of us who do not eat meat.Breakfast was a good affair lunch light bites on offer and dinner in the grand affair amazingly enough we found out that both Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages were included at lunch and dinner and there was an amazing coffee station offering a variety of coffees or teas with cookies free of charge. The cabins also had tea and coffee facilities if you wished to stay in your cabin. My second complaint/comment is slippers would be nice in your cabin for wandering around the ship after a hard day walking and enjoying the sites would be nice if these are included rather than part of one of the extras that you can buy if you so wish. The third suggestion is that it would be nice if both passengers could complete independently they have to cruise questionnaire not everybody is a couple are able to Complete together. I was really glad that we booked a little extra package a treat given we had to wait over a year to take the holiday the backstage trip around the chef and an invite to view the wheelhouse made it extra special. We couldn’t fault the cruise director all the crew for all they did for us are slick operation from start to finish.
It was a real shame because of Covid a number of the markets were closed we hope to return as having done more research we found out other sites that would be nice to see I’ll be included as some of the tours over and above the walking tours that came as part of our package. We found these to be really interesting and got to places I don’t think you would notice if you didn’t bother to book one. But it would be nice if perhaps the company could extend their offer of different excursions to satisfy even more peoples intrests

Hi we are looking to go on a Newmarket river cruise can anybody tell me what the evening entertainment is like thank you
Written February 26, 2020
We were on Viking Rhine cruise. Every evening dinner was at 7 by which time we were sailing. Entertainment was in the lounge and most nights it was a one man band type musician, dancing, trivia night. Since we averaged about 5 miles a day walking on the tours it was fine as we had to be up at 7 next morning to get breakfast and be on the tour for next stop.

I can only comment on River cruise line and this is entirely possible .
There is 24 hour security and a key pad
I would believe this is on all boats without a problem .
Enjoy your cruise .
