Oberkassel lies on the left side of the Rhine, which seem to have prevented it from being distructed during the war (only 20 bombs fell). As a consequence, this part of the town has conserved its character from the turn of the century. Even some Jugendstil jewels are there. Take the tram to Barbarossaplatz and then exit to the left (coming from the centre). Just walk around the streets and have a look at the nice buildings. On return, you can have a wine at Saita Vini. If it is summer, there will be tables at the square. If you are hungry go for the Schiff Ahoi, located 700 m away at Belsenplatz. It is the most value for money place to eat in Oberkassel.

I LOVE Oberkassel! The tree lined streets, the old buildings, the Rhine River, the jogging along the river whenever I want. Its beautiful, peaceful, and the most amazing place to relax!!!

This a great neighborhood. There are delicious bakeries, quaint shops and restaurants. It is worth a visit. Less crowded than Altstadt but certainly worth the time to take it. I suggest getting a cup of coffee or having a beer and sit outside and watch people go by after you have taken in the shops. I had lunch there and loved watching the retired locals hang out and catch up and others on lunch break. Really nice area.

Rich an famous live on the other side of the Rhine river. During August they have the large fair with fireworks on this side of dusseldorf. If you have extra time take the kids to through rocks bouncing on the water. This is wat i did as a kid. No video, dvd or texting ;). Nice restaurants around the tram station just across the bridge. Location just opposite from the old city with excellent view of the river rhine, parks to stay and walking distance to many of the highlights of Düsseldorf in the center, like shopping malls, Königsallee. Airport and Arena close by, max 10 minutes drive.

Very comfortable area to live! I was envious - nice houses, Rein river bank, green parks.... And the city just on the opposite bank of the river.

Beautiful, beautiful area in Düsseldorf! We crossed the bridge by foot (yes, it was windy) and took loads of beautiful photos on both sides of the bridge. I feel like we could have walked around forever and keep on spotting beautiful houses and cute little details. The day was sunny and this place is carved in my mind as a beautiful, special place.

If you want to see what genuine pre-war Dusseldorf looks like I recommend the streets of Oberkassel. Very accessible by Tram across the Rhine. Lovely architecture, in particular Bormers Strasse, Glucksberger Strasse and Steffers Strasse. The buildings are originals. This areas also demonstrates how good the reconstruction work is in the war damaged areas.

Do NOT move here. People think they are better than the rest of the world. I am so happy that I could leave after living here for 2 1/2 years. Still lots of good restaurants and bars with normal people as well.
