My birthplace, Altstadt, is a very sad story today. One Euro markets, the Düsseldorf district court is a chic Miki booth and the crowd is nasty. Once upon a time... there was a stabbing and little Chicago at night

Very cozy pedestrian zone with shops of all kinds i.e. shoes and clothes, cafes and restaurants as well as souvenirs. Friendly service and kind people. Old town with old pavement so i recommend you wear practical shoes ;-)

The walk through the old town of Dusseldorf is very lively. It is full of terraces and restaurants, with a predominance of Spaniards, Italians and Argentines. There are also classic German breweries. All this contributes to a very lively atmosphere. And if there is a soccer championship, like this time, the atmosphere is incredible.

The old town, with the longest bar in the world, offers several pubs and bars and has many facets. It is a popular meeting place after work. A relaxed and happy atmosphere is normal here. If you want to celebrate and love the party atmosphere, this is the right place for you.

We spend my birthday in the Altstadt, and had a great time after all with 16 international people.
The only (and unacceptable) point is that the dark-skinned friends wouldn't be allowed to enter in any club, while the white people between us were allowed anywhere. One of them even made a joke saying he was a nazi.

I really enjoyed walking around all town. I had to come here for work otherwise it would not have been on my must-go list. It was mostly quiet and a lot of the shops were closed on a Sunday morning. However it is in the middle of carnival so there are people around in costume. But I think the real partying is at night. Altogether a fun spot but not a must visit

Germany is a great country but there is one very bizarre thing that few of the natives want to talk about. If you’re not a white person, the nightlife in most major cities can be very hostile. In Dusseldorf’s Altstadt me (originally from Iran), a Brazilian friend and some other friends from Sweden went for a night out. The bouncers let all my white Swedish friends in without any problem but the Brazilian guy and I were not let in without being told why. Even though we pointed out that they let everybody else in but us and asked for a reason they refused and told us to leave. On another occasion exactly same thing happened and I never tried the nightlife in Dusseldorf again. I was told by some that they didn’t let us in because “we look Turkish” but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Back at the hostel I found out that the guy from Thailand would also be refused in and the cleaning guy from Africa had stopped even trying as the bouncers had told him they don’t let any black people in. One nightclub that stood out worse than others is called “Kuhstall” in the Altstadt, its extremely discriminatory with regards to racial preference.
I spoke to the police about it and they told me this is happening in all major cities in Germany and they can’t do anything because of the German laws for restaurant and bar owners. It had even happened to one of their own colleague when they were out one night as he is a bit dark skinned and was refused entry.
Moving to Cologne didn’t get that much better even though it is known for being a liberal and open-minded city. It’s unfortunately similar but subtler so I ended up going to nightclubs in the suburbs instead of the city centre as it’s a bit more relaxed.
This practice is a major cause for tension and unnecessarily hurting a lot of people. Parties are meant to connect people not to make others feel disavowed and rejected. It felt like many ignored this subject or tried to excuse it as trivial but Germany is too beautiful to go through something like this again, it doesn’t need to relive it.
To all of you who want to do something about it I suggest a group of guys get together, use a hidden camera while trying to get in to clubs and upload the clip on twitter, facebook etc to shame those idiots. Racism needs to be opposed no matter where it happens.

We are traveling to Dusseldorf in the middle of June 2017. We have a 2 day planned stopover. We will visit Old town and possibly room there but are interested in some interesting architecture. We would like to stay close to the airport the 3rd day we flight out noonish.
Written December 30, 2016
When you arrive at airport catch a train in to the city. A ''Red Bus'' tour originates opposite the station.
If you have luggage there is storage at the station. The tour is the best city tour I have taken in Europe and takes you past everything Duseldorf has to offer. It is only about 15 Euros and well worth it. I have written it up on Tripadvisor. This is a very contrasting city as far as architecture goes and it is worth taking this hop on hop off trip before you make plans for your 3 day stay. I am not aware of airport hotels but I am sure Tripadvisors or Hotel. com sites will help you out with location and price.

How much are drinks at the christmas market?
Written November 21, 2016
Hello
Prices for Gluwein vary. They charge a deposit on the glass or mug which you can keep. It depends on the quality of the mug some are attractive but others very touristy. The average 3€ for gluwein plus €5 deposit. Beer around €5

My husband and I prefer to stay at Bed and Breakfast Inn or hotels that are small and personal, and hospitable any suggestions?

We stayed in Hilden, Dusseldorf....took the train out there, like a sub-burb. Stayed at the Amber Hotel. It's a small chain. Very clean & reliable. Restaurant on site. I think it was 3 floors.
Not sure about B & B's. Parts of Dusseldorf were kind of scary. It was very hard to find anyone who spoke English. Dusseldorf is pretty industrial not touristy, we used the city for a meeting point, to meet family who were already travelling in Germany to go to Alsace to trace our family tree. Alstadt was only a couple of blocks down from the hotel and a nice area, all the restaurants and bars opened up into a large courtyard with open air seating/tables shade very pretty, nice shops that close early compared to usa. On our way back we stayed literally across the large divided street from the Amber Hotel and it was like another world...we didn't sleep a wink! There was a hookah lounge in our lobby......
