The Statue cum fountain, in the name of a famous general, was erected in the market square of Cologne. Normally the place was used as the assembly point and rally starting point around the area. It was always crowded with people with happy atmosphere.

There is a lovely story behind the carvings on this fountain about a woman who didn’t love someone until he came into money. Good on him for not falling for it though! A refreshing place to splash young children too on a scorching hot day!

The statue of the seventeenth century general stands on top of a three tiered square pedestal in the Alter markt. The top level is decorated with cherubs at each corner while the middle level depicts human figures in a seated position. The lowest level has...More

One of the many landmarks that introduce you to the long history of Cologne and help you appreciate the city. Johann Von Werth was a general during the Thirty Year's War. The statue, I understand, is a rallying point for the Cologne Karneval.

Like so many of the landmarks throughout Cologne’s many squares this massive fountain in the old market is a fine exhibit but even more so for the Christmas market season when the area is made into a giant ice rink all around it. What a...More

Quite a pleasant fountain/statue and a nice focal point for the Old Market, but you won't appreciate it if as much as you might if you don't know about the legend of Jan and Griet which is a focal point for Cologne's famous Karneval. So...More

Great place to sit in the center of the square and watch the people going by. Nice spot for reflection.

We had no idea this was a fountain, as it was totally dry when we visited. Initially, we thought it was a lovely pillar of some sort. The fountain is located in the middle of a lovely square, near the town hall. You cannot miss...More

After travelling from Vienna on a river cruise through incredibly beautiful towns and cities, immaculately kept, Cologne was definitely unkempt! On top of that, the main attraction, the cathedral, was surrounded by non-descript buildings which made it almost impossible to appreciate the magnificence of the...More
