Iconic view. No, really, it actually is.
Iconic is a very over-used term these days but the view of Cologne from the SE side of the Hohelzollern Bridge might just be described as that. The bridge and the cathedral are a spectacular juxtaposition of old and new, steel and stone, motion and rest, and that's without the twinkling extravaganza of a million padlocks lining the pedestrian bridges on either side of the tracks. An unexpected and delightful pleasure.

Just past the cathedral in Cologne is this famous bridge.. I crossed it on the ICE train from Berlin to Cologne, In fact most trains from Regional to High Speed cross this bridge, And I walked from the cathedral side and back, It took me aprox after resting, 45 mins, But well worth it. Stunning views over the Rhine..Also when I went on a 1hr boat trip you go underneath this marvellous bridge. When I crossed it you see thousends of padlocks that symbolises Love.. And there were one or two statues as well next to it..

A Few Tips About the Hohenzollern Bridge
This walking bridge over the Rhine is just a fun place to visit. It is estimated that there are over 500,000 “love locks.” Although I wonder if anyone has actually counted? The authorities have no fear that their bridge will hold up. The tradition of “love locks” actually came from Italy. The walking bridge is over 500 feet long. The other part of the bridge is a railway bridge which has become the busiest rail bridge in Germany with 1,200 trains daily. A short distance away is the famous Cologne Cathedral which dates back to the 13th century. It is the tallest twin-spired church in the entire world. A 2023 segment of the Amazing Race was filmed at the walking bridge when contestants had to find a specific lock among all the other locks. Then, they had to open up the lock to get a clue. The contestants had to find the name of Cologne’s oldest cologne dating back to 1799 to open up the lock. Named after its location, cologne “4711” is still used today. During WWII, the German Navy gave 4711 to their submariners to suppress the smells on the vessels. The submariners would use part of the cologne and bring the rest back for gifts. If you are so inclined on having a love lock placed on the bridge, there is usually a vendor close by that will sell you a lock and engrave it too. Koln- pleasantly surprised
Pleasantly surprised during our first visit to Koln. It is a lovely city with friendly people, good restaurants and an awesome vibe. The cathedral is magnificent and a visit to the Koln triangle is also worth it. It is easy to walk everywhere and feels safe. We tired the brauhous and lives the experience. Christmas markets were the best - practically in every corner with good live music, delicious food and a wonderful crowd.

    Nice walk over
This is the main bridge by train into Cologne Central Station and leads from one side of the river to the other. It is also how you can get to Cologne Triangle. The pedestrian walkway is filler with padlocks, amazing how many there are. I even saw a man at the start selling them, not sure if he was writing names on too. The walk over is lovely and gives a great view of the river and looking back to the old town. On the other side there are a few places to eat and drink and you are also able to walk along this side of the river.

    Lovely Walkway on the Bridge
The Bridge is right next to the Cathedral, so it’s an easy way to swing by the bridge as well. It has a lovely walkway for pedestrians and bike riders. You get a beautiful view of the Cathedral from the other side of the Bridge. Lovely view of the River and Other side of Köln. A lot of padlocks on them - fun to see them!

    WOW! Mind blowing.
Wow! Speechless. Never seen so many locks in my life. Seems they started the other side of the bridge as well and garden area. It doesn’t stop. Very unique and worn seeing. It’s right next to the cathedral. Not sure how many people kept their promise to each other but hey! It’s very unique.

What is a trip to Cologne without putting your personalized padlock on the Hohenzollern Bridge. We had heard about the so my wife had made up a lock to attach to the bridge.
We found out later, because of the popularity of this attraction, the city cuts off all the locks at least once a year because of the weight that the bridge was not built to handle.

This is a huge bridge crossing the Rhine River which has trains going over it besides pedestrian traffic. However one of the most memorial things about it is the locks which are attached to the railing. The "love locks" are put on the railing and the key thrown into the river. Our guide said there were almost 600,000 locks on the bridge.

This bridge is as iconic to Cologne as the Cathedral is. There are many photos of the two. You can cross the Rhine via this bridge, either by train or walk across it. The bridge is adorned with Padlocks that lovers have put on it. You can get great views from Koln Triangle's Panoramic roof. When walking across the bridge stop and watch the many River Cruise Ships that go up and down the Rhine. The bridge is lit at night and is a great spot to just wander across.

This bridge is the main one in Cologne for the train, ship and lovers. It is right next to the Cologne Central Station, across the Rhine. Because it is for train traffic, it can handle to heavy loads of Lover's Lock. It is legal to do so on this bridge.

Cologne is an interesting city. It is a juxtaposition of the old and the new. The river is beautiful and cruise ships pass up and down it. I was surprised to discover that in this part of Germany they drink small beers in small glasses that taste like our american pilsners. The cathedral in the center of the city is amazing and somehow it survived WWII despite being a city that was totally bombed out. The cuisine of the city was pretty basic. Schnitzel and other pork dishes were the main staple and potatoes and greens.

A cultural landmark bridge over the Rhine River. Day or night stroll over either side for a great view of this lovely city. Both sides have love locks upon the structure which glisten in the sun/lamp light. Also a great place for train spotting due to the high volume going in & out of the nearby central station.

We visited this bridge as part of a city tour while on a Rhine River cruise. This is a multi-track railway bridge that also accommodates foot traffic. Thousands of locks have been attached to the bridge fences and railings signifying the love of couples to one another.

As you walk on this bridge, you will see thousands and thousands of locks, tied on the bridge right next to you. Some have names on them, some initials, some numbers and some years.

You are reminded of how fickle life is. There would have been millions of people who have walked on this bridge before you, and there will be a million others to do that after you. You are nothing, but a speck in time, there at the moment. The bridge has been through so much, from second world war to present day, it has seen the world change, but it is still there.

This bridge is nothing, but a living time-machine, that takes you back in time and also brings you back by the time you reach the end of it.

Walk on this bridge with someone you love. So that you can remember it for your life, and for your time on this planet...
