Really good if one is interested in this kind of museum

They have a fantastic collection here. The lay out is clear and the building is modern and clearly structured. They also have a decent shop and cafe here.
It's near all the shops , so a shopping session before or after is an easy thing to do.

A really good museum and very good and modern (partially interactive) presentation of information and exhibits. Also quite diverse in terms of topics.

Cultural Journey

The musuem is well laid out and the themed exhibits as well as the various highlights are really informative. A syste of arrows to guide the visitor in the right order will be helpful as well as more English translations of content of descriptions at the exhibits themselves would be very educational. A half day at most. The activities for children too are great.

Interesting anthropological museum with loads to explore and discover

The objects, photographs and "settings" in this museum are generously displayed over 3 levels, with a range of non-European objects relating to religion, the everyday, clothes, etc, and also displays which challenge ideas about "otherness", racism and identity. It is, overall, a very good museum; if you want to read every panel and take everything in (there are also some videos and clever animations), you will need to have more than 2 hours to do everything. I particularly enjoyed the comparisons and explanations of the various major religions, as this could be educational for most of us.

The following points are nit-picking, but would make it an excellent experience: first, some of the texts are too small, or too low down, to be read - if you try to approach some of them to read them better, you trigger the audio-alarm ("Please stand back!"). This was a bit annoying, as there is no way one can read these panels otherwise; they are too low to be read by adults (and I and my companion are not particularly tall). Secondly, it would have been good to present the non-European objects alongside objects coming from European countries, or even Germany, as the collections did not include these. However, it would be of interest to compare - say - bridal wear from foreign countries at the beginning of the 20th century with similar garments in Germany of that time. Finally, it would be great if the museum allowed for a different order for walking through the very generously spaced-out exhibition sections. It felt a bit as if one had to follow the exact route of the "parcours", and couldn't easily skip a section if one had had enough.

Not a place to go to again and again, but I could definitely envisage going back some time - maybe with a younger family member in tow, so that they had their eyes opened as much as I did.

Fascinating museum

Really interesting and thought-provoking experience, with a different, more critical point of view than other anthropological museums I have visited. Varied exhibits and informative audio guide available in English. Would be of interest to adults and children alike.

no bags or valuables allowed in the museum
Jul 2018 • Solo
I bought a ticket and then proceeded to enter the museum but was then told to go to the cloakroom. Confused I did so.
I had a small handbag with me that was just big enough to fit my phone, purse, keys, diary and passport but their policy is no bags are allowed in the museum.
As I didn't want to leave my valuables in their cloakroom i took out my phone, purse, diary and passport and thought this will be very inconvenient to walk around a museum carrying all this in my hands. The reason I have a bag is so I do not have to carry these in my hands. I then handed over my empty bag and they tried to charge me 1E to look after it. I decided I did not want to pay on top to be inconvenienced so asked for a refund on my ticket.

I really do not understand this policy. The bag was too small to steal thing from the museum with. If it was for security reasons then they could search my bag?? Leaving it in the cloakroom in the same building would not reduce the risk?

Global and rightly so
Jun 2018 • Solo
This museum shows cultures from all over the world, with comments mostly about the relation of Europeans with that "far-away" world. How we got to know the other parts of the world and how we, as Europeans, thought that "all that" was primitive and how we were so much better. Till people like Joest, Von Oppenheim, and others, started to realise that prejudice and judgment were really weird and that we should start learning from what we see elsewhere. We should start to understand hoe rich these cultures are, in their own way. This was a necessary and beautiful lesson for us as Europeans, with all our "wisdom". As they say in the museum: we are white and never think about the colour of our skin as we think that we are the norm, the right standard. How ridiculous such an idea is. Besides that, all items are displayed in a lovely and caring way.

Really interesting museum. My 5 year old enjoyed looking at all the interesting artefacts. The staff were great, really friendly and went out of their way to show us certain exhibits. Spent a great couple of hours having a wander.
