Basilica of St. Mary in the Capitol - a beautiful Catholic church. Access was free, but you should throw 1 € donation into the cash register. The church was not so big, but relatively interesting. It is the oldest of the three-cone complexes typical of the Romanesque style of the northern Rhine-Maas region and one of the twelve Romanesque basilicas in the old town of Cologne.

One of the twelve Romanesque churches in Cologne and recognized as the most important temple after the Cathedral. It is considered a minor basilica and is the largest of all the churches in Cologne. Very restored highlights the ceiling, the main altar, some paintings and sculptures and especially the crypt, which is one of the largest in Europe

St. Maria im Kapitol (St. Mary's in the Capitol), consecrated in 1065, is a Romanesque church based on the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, and was dedicated to St. Mary. This church has a trefoil-shaped apse which serves as a model for the ”cloverleaf” chancels of other churches. The main level of the church was open during our visit and the crypt was closed (entrance on the right side of the choir. Allow ~30 + min for your visit.

St. Maria in Kapitol was built between 1040 and 1065, and it is the largest of the 12 Romanesque churches in Cologne. During WW II the church was damaged heavily, and restorations were completed in 1984.
Several art pieces are visible, such as the Limburger Madonna, the plague Crucifix, the wooden doors and others.

Romanesque church completely renovated after 1940-45 preceded by an 11th century cloister.
Signs explain his story. (The google-trad app is magical if you don't speak German). A replica depicts the ancient temple of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva (hence its name of Capitol).
The clover-shaped plan is original, large doors from 1065 are preserved at the back of the church, admission is free

Cologne has many churches. I really like this one not only because of the pretty courtyard that provides some peace but also for a legend that some locals told me about:
There was once boy who looked a bit undernourished. The mother was confused as she would give her son an apple to take to school every day. After a long time of not understanding what was happening, the mother followed the son from school. She noticed that he entered the church, so she quietly followed. He would walk through the church and go directly to the statue of Mary with baby Jesus. He would then say "here is an apple for poor hungry looking Jesus" and walk home. When he finished school he lacked money so Mary and Jesus returned his multiple years of apple gift making by providing him with money when he was running low.
If you go there today, you will see how people still leave apples at the "same" statue.

This church with its lovely garden is all you'll wish for after being part of the crowds in the dome and Altstadt. In the monastery garden the bumblebees enjoy the dahlias (just as beautiful as in any botanical garden) and in the church you can truly feel the peace. This is the place to go for some serenity!

Right near downtown, and easy to find, St. Maria im Kapitol is one of the best preserved Romanesque churches in the Cologne area. From the Cathedral walk straight down the pedestrian only Hohe Strasse until the end. Look to the left and you will see the tower. Make a left on L111 and a quick right onto Kasinostrasse and the entrance is before you. The church was heavily damaged in WW II, in fact there are displays that show the destruction during the war. Hence, the interior is heavily restored and bare. It is certainly worth a the ten minute journey from downtown however, because the spare interior is evocative. Notice the columns within arches over the main door in the nave that show that Carolingian architecture is very influential. This is a great building that is often overlooked, but is a must for serious architecture fans.

While not as spectacular as St. Gereon, this is one of the most important of the 12 "Romanische Kirchen", the 12 churches built in the 10-13th century all over present day Cologne. Some of them took a really hard beating during WWII and this one was one of the most damaged. It has since been rebuilt and features a template example of the three abside presbytery which was typical of the era. What St. Gereon shows in height, this building presents in width, it covers an enormous area. St. Mary in the Capitol belongs to the mut sees of the 12 Romanesque churches.
