While we were visiting cologne, we took the bus here. It is wonderfully manicured graveyard. Many interesting graves. We used google to learn the story of the people. Nice place to sit and relax in the shade.

Was so looking forward to visiting and seeing the cemetery sculptures but it was not to be . We easily got there via a tram but a guard at the entrance told us we could not visit as the had found a bomb . I didn’t believe him at first but we had previously done a WW1 battlefield tour where they explained that finding bombs is a fairly regular occurrence in a previous war torn area .

This is as much a art museum as a cemetary.
We decided to just go off on our own from our tour, I read about this and we decided to check it out especially since old cemeteries fascinate us. This place is amazing, it's huge and peaceful, plenty of trees like the best park. But what is so interesting are the grave sites we walked around quite a bit and never saw one duplicated memorial and so many were works of art in themselves, many family plots with large individual memorials you must see to believe. Also almost every grave is a small garden and all are kept up by family. The only unkept graves I believe are where there are no more living relatives or they have moved away.

Being myself from cologne and having a family plot there, I like to go to Melaten. Not only to pay a visit to the family plot but also to take a walk. Every tomb stone tells you a story and some of the 19th century plots are house like buildings, which were obviously reserved to the upper class at that time. The place started out in the Middle Ages as a Leprosy colony and was then transformed into a cemetery by the end of the 18th century. Go there for a walk, it's just 3 stops by tram from the city center

I agree to all the reviews of the tourists having visited this great place of peace.
The cemetery is very easy to reach. Take from Neumarkt (the middle of the City)
street car No.1 direction Junkersdorf or Weiden West. You must leave at the
fourth stop ( Melaten ), cross the street and you are there. Opening time is different
during the year. In any case it will be open from 9.00 until 4.00 pm (16.00).

Don't get me wrong this place is pretty and well taken care of but it is not something that you need to do if you come to the city. It would have been serene if it wasn't for the leaf blowers and motorized carts zipping around carrying maintenance workers. There are some well made statues and the grounds are really well cared for but this is what it is ... a cemetery. If you want to spend some time outside and are willing to travel a bit go to the Botanical Gardens. If you want to see something inspiring go to the churches. Don't get me wrong this place isn't bad and you can spend some time here but I would have been fine not going here and wish I would have spent those hours on a different activity while in Cologne. I think the cemetery in Hamburg, Germany - Ohlsdorf Cemetery is as nice as this or better but I wouldn't recommend someone to go there or take one of my friends for a visit when they come to town unless they were going to be there for a very extended stay and that is how I feel about the Melaten.

I like to amble through this cemetery when life gets a little busy. The tree canopy makes it so quiet, it is hard to believe that you are in the middle of a busy metropolis. The grave markers are fascinating. The stone carvings are extraordinary. The flowers and the birds are lovely too. If you just need a moment away from the hustle and bustle of the city, I strongly recommend a stroll.

Lovely cemetery quite big and some amazing architecture definitely worth the 10 minute metro ride out away from the hustle and noise spent a good couple of hours just walking round

Su alcuni siti si legge che c’è una sorta di tassa da pagare. Vorrei sapere se ci fosse un’ingresso da pagare, o un’offerta o se fosse ad ingresso gratuito, grazie
