Went with some local friends to see the old coal mine. It has a lot of history relating to the local heritage and industry. The best part is the beer garden serving BBQ food and beer!

What a place to go--deep underground into an old mineshaft. This was a truly different experience for us and well worth while.

It was interesting to see the equipment and underground galeries (take a jacket with you, it's cold down there). Hands-on experience including a simulator and a trip on top of the old lift (nice view). People there are friendly and enjoy giving explanations or make jokes.

The visit of the museum seemed to be a must do in the area - it was the first time we actually travelled to the Ruhrgebiet. First of all, we really are interested in technology, history, and especially in mining and like to visit museums. However, the much acclaimed German Mining Museum didn't meet our expectations at all. Maybe one... More

I truly enjoyed visiting this museum, we were fortunate enough to meet a group of coal miners who had worked the mines for over 30 years. They explained a lot to us which made the visit so much more informative. - I am originally from Germany and this area, therefore I could translate for the English speaking member of our... More

Museum itself is excellent. Huge, and with a lot of stuff to admire. The machines used for digging, the type of stones, the mine below museum. We had with us someone who speaks German, otherwise we would lose almost half of the museum. Ticket is very cheap for what you get. But again, there should be at least an audio... More

The first time I arrived here it was after 16.00, and the underground section was already closed, so I came back a second time. Then the Zeche (tower) was closed due to the strong wind. Nevertheless, the museum is really nice, with many large drilling machines and other equipment in the underground section. In the museum building one can see... More

It's a great and very interesting museum. The collection of models and mining/geology related items is very nice, but what stands out by far are the tunnels. The tunnel system is really large and features a large number of tunnel styles and mining machinery. Also a must visit is the mining tower with a great view of the surrounding area.... More
