The monumental Karlsbrunnen fountain stands in the Marktplatz in front of Aachen Town Hall. It includes a statue of Charlemagne that was first erected in 1620 (this is today a copy as the original is now in a Museum) and the fountain was placed in the basement of the Town Hall during WW2 to protect it. I am well travelled and as such have seen some impressive fountains, the Karlsbrunnen is worth a look but won't be a fountain that is etched into your memory for years to come.

The Karlsbrunnen is a fountain featuring a statue of Charlemagne at its centrepiece. The fountain isn’t much to look at, but the sculpture is nice. It depicts the emperor wearing his imperial regalia. In his right hand he holds Imperial sceptre and cupped in his right, the Imperial Orb. The fountain is especially photogenic with the Aachen City Hall as a backdrop.
Worth a look when in Aachen.

Compared to the background of the city hall, this figure of Karlsbrunnen looks small. The fountain was functioning when I was there. It is worth a quick peak while admiring the city hall building.

The Charlemagne the Great fountain (Karlsbrunnen or Marktbrunnen) is the oldest fountain in the city. Since 1620, he has been crowned by a figure of Charlemagne, who was cast in Dinant. When the French invaded the city in 1792, the statue of Charlemagne was taken to Paris as a spoil of war but could be regained by successful negotiations of the incumbent Aachen Maire Johann Wilhelm Gottfried von Lommessem in 1804 and re-established a year later. The original figure has been in the Coronation Hall of the Town Hall since 1969. A copy of Charlemagne the Great now stands in the six-ton bronze basin. The bronze fountain basin is also affectionately known as the “Eäzekomp” (the local dialect for “pea bowl”) because of its appearance. Allow for ~15 minute for your visit.

The Karlsbrunnen is a huge fountain located in the square in front of the Rathaus with a statue of Charlemagne. The same statue is in Centre Charlemagne (they do duplicates?).
There are plenty of cafes surrounding the square including one that just went out of business. So grab a bench/chair and enjoy the view.

Aachen is the town of Charlemagne - it was the capital of his empire- and as such what better place to have the statue of the great King than the Markt.
In the Markt in front of the Rathaus on top of a fountain (Karlsbrunnen) is the statue of Charlemagne, equally interesting for those into arts and also for those into history.
So if you want more inputs in regards to the historical figure I recommend you take a guided tour so you get the most inputs - or you can check the www.
When in Aachen stop here for a few min take a few pics, it is one of the Landmarks of the city, you should not miss it.

800 AD Charlemagne crowned emperor, all Dutch youngsters had to learn while at school. It happened in Aachen, the heart of of the Frankish land which included countries that now form the most developed part of the EU (Germany, France, North Italy, Austria, the low countries).
The statue, a replica (the original is in the nearby museum) was placed at the oldest source in the city in 1620, a time when people were already fully aware of the importance of Charles. To me he looks a bit like God or a father figure: Pater Europae, though I realize he also was a ruthless ruler who ordered the killing of anybody who would not convert to Christianity.

Karlsbrunner is part of the old town in Aachen which is well worth a visit and easy to visit from Koln /Cologne . If your going to /from UK easy to visit on way to/from UK by road and especially by rail (cheaper hotels that Cologne) . This is a pleasant area and really liked the place.
