After several weeks of sight seeing in Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany, we took a break from the museums, castles and other historical landmarks and spent a therapeutic day of total relaxation at the Asia Therme Wellness Spa in Korschenbroich, Germany which is located in the North Rhine-Westphalia region and just north of Cologne.

The spa is easy to reach, approximately a 20-30 minute train ride from Cologne and a short 10 minute walk from the train station in Kleinenbroich. We visited on a Sunday with an all day pass costing 23 Euros per person. Robes, towels, and shower shoes can be rented for an additional fee, but you can bring your own. Upon entering the reception area you are provided a numbered key to a designated secured locker which you then attach to your wrist. Be advised that the entire spa is considered "textile free" which means it’s a totally nude facility with the exception of the restaurant/dining area where a robe and shower shoes must be worn. The locker room/dressing area is also a mixed communal area where males and females use the same changing facilities which are located in front of the many lockers that are provided for securing your clothing and other belongings.

Asia Therme presented itself as a clean and well maintained facility. It has seven saunas of various themes and temperatures, a steam bath, an indoor/outdoor pool, several whirlpools, a footbath, several different shower zones, and various lounge/relaxation/quiet areas. Massages are also available but reservations must be made in advance for these services. As with all saunas in Germany, any form of clothing/swimsuits is strictly forbidden inside the saunas for sanitary and hygienic reasons (please note that while inside the sauna one must sit on a towel and not allow any body parts to touch the sitting areas), although some spas that have entirely separate sauna/pool facilities may require bathing attire in the pool and whirlpool areas. Again, Asia Therme Spa is a totally nude facility – which is strictly enforced - although some patrons wear a robe or wrap a towel around themselves while going between the pools, saunas and showers; but primarily, the majority of people are naked. Although this may seem unusual and awkward to most Americans and those of other prim cultures, this is the practice and custom in Germany as well as other European countries and they handle this with a great deal of respectability and élan. We have visited similar spas in the Netherlands and Germany on prior vacations and quite frankly, the nudity is no big deal. There is nothing sexual about this ritual and after the initial few minutes of being naked you actually forget about your modesty and easily acclimate with everyone else. No one seems to mind or notice the nudity and it’s actually very liberating. Moreover, the American practice of profusely sweating in a sauna while clothed and then wearing the same clammy, uncomfortable, sweat soaked swimsuit to go into a pool or whirlpool is totally unhygienic. Why would anyone ever want to do this? The patrons at Asia Therme were of all shapes, sizes and ages – although children under fourteen years of age are not allowed. The Germans are non-judgmental and no one feels self conscious or uncomfortable; everyone appeared relaxed and enjoying themselves no matter what their physical shape, personal characteristics, or level of fitness. Yes, compared to other cultures, the Europeans have a totally different and much more open and healthier attitude towards nudity; how refreshing!

Asia Therme was an oasis of comfort for us and a great way to relax and unwind after several weeks of non stop touring. Our experience was very therapeutic and refreshing. There are however a few caveats for those contemplating a visit to this venue. First of all, as previously indicated the spa is a totally nude environment. If you are uncomfortable or embarrassed shedding your clothes and modesty in this type of setting I would suggest foregoing this therapeutic experience. Secondly, Asia Therme does not accept any credit cards. They only accept a debit card issued through banks in Germany or you can pay with cash (euros). The day we visited it was fairly crowded; perhaps because it was a weekend. That being said, loungers in the relaxation and quiet areas were difficult to secure. Although the spa policy states that towels and other personal effects are not to be placed on loungers if not in use, many patrons seemed to come in, secure their favorite perch and then leave to utilize the saunas and pools for hours at a time; or they would spend time in the restaurant enjoying a leisurely meal or drink, thus preventing other patrons from using the loungers. Although there are numerous loungers set outside around the outdoor pool and in the garden areas, the day we visited the weather was cool and overcast, and therefore not conducive to lounging outside. In this respect, management should enforce their rules! Thirdly, from a personal preference, we thought the temperature of the whirlpools was tepid at best and could have been much hotter. Not sure of the exact temperature of the water but we’re accustomed to and prefer hot whirlpools. Finally, being that the spa is located outside a major metropolitan area, virtually all the patrons were German and few spoke English. No problem for us as my wife speaks and has an understanding of the language and we easily acclimate with other cultures. However, for those who may feel uncomfortable in this type of setting, are interested in mixing with an international clientele, or conversing and interacting in English with staff or other patrons, this may be a challenging experience.

For those seeking a comforting and refreshing break from the hectic pace of touring and looking to spend a day of rest and relaxation, we would definitely recommend this spa to others. If you’re not in this particular area, find a similar spa in Germany, leave your modesty behind, join in with the locals, and partake in a remarkably soothing, relaxing, calming, and therapeutic German/European experience. Visiting a spa in Europe is something we always look forward to and invariably is a highlight of our travels – not to mention its therapeutic benefits to body and soul.

I've been here a few times now, and I enjoy it so much I keep coming back. This spa has a wonderful relaxing atmosphere and a lot of variety in a relatively small space. There are eight or nine saunas in a wide variety of styles, along with a steam bath, plunge pools, swimming pool and whirlpool baths. My favourites are the earth sauna, which has a fire, and the Himalayan salt sauna: both extremely relaxing. The staff are very competent and friendly, and the sauna meisters really know what they're doing when it comes to the Aufguss! The garden is also a very pleasant place to stroll and cool off, and has loungers for sunbathing in the summer. Overall, this spa is an excellent retreat after a hectic week. I just wish I lived nearer to it!

The place is nice. Large locker rooms, plenty of indoor and outdoor swimming pools, sauna and steam baths. It ;s unisex and everyone enjoys naked. Many young people but also more mature.

I have been here today with my wife and found out that the rules from their site omited to say that you should use the swimming pools and sauna only naked. We found it only after spending 2 hours there when the sauna meister was very rude making us fell very bad in front of the people and asked us to leave the building. At the reception we had the same rude treatment from the lady saying us that it is german culture to use the swimming pools and sauna only naked. We used towel as everyone use in saunas but it seems that for them having a swimming suit it is offensive and you are asked to leave the building. It was very inapropriate for my wife to be asked from a men (personel of the sauna) to get undressed to be able to stay in this place. Receiving our money back was a hard thing and we didn’t receive all the money. And whille asking our money back we had the same rude experience from the receptionist. They did not even tried to appologize considerring that giving us a part from the paid ticket will solve the situation.

Lots of facilities, clean, good and professional staff. What else could one wish for. One thing: prices have gone up lately, and what has happened to the free tea. A place worth coming back and back for.

Although the weather was trouble, my wife and enjoyed our day here. The attraction to this spa, are the many saunas, indoor pool connecting to an outdoor pool. You can also enjoy a warm cup of complimentary tea by a roaring fire place. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Don't forget to try the menu at the restaurant, simply outstanding.

This is one of the best SPA´s I have never been. It is located just 20 minutes drive from Düssendorf, particularly enjoyable the summer sunbaths in the large garden, it is filled with oriental flavors, design and objects, nearly all of them original pieces. The number of saunas, massages and relaxing rooms possibilities is really exceptional. It is very full just at the weekends but due to the size you will never feel overwhelmed. The cost is reasonable if compared with the service

There are not so many nice Sauna Lanschaften in Dusseldorf (it is true that Cologne not, that far, has possibly the biggest concentration of nice ones which may explain why) so we decided to try one of the closest ones about 20 minutes out of town by car (although it seems the S Bahn also has a stop next door). The place is just the right size, pretty large but not huge, looking quite new, very clean and with a about 10 different saunas. Importantly there are many comfortable and well lit relaxation areas. The decoration is reminiscent of Asia but this not very convincing and rather secondary. Probably a nice place in summer too as there is a plenty of outdoor space. Standard prices for that kind of place. Very relaxed, efficient and pleasant: we liked this place very much.

This was the first time for us to visit this particular sauna and thermal bath. Before we headed off to Asia Therme Wellnes Spa, we had a look at their website. We got pretty curious about this sauna bath.

However when we got there, the number of parking spots are quite low, which is something we've never experienced before at different saunas. Anyway, the front desk told us that we aren't supposed to eat and drink the stuff what we brought along. This was the first concern that we decided to stay there just up to 4 hours instead of a whole day as originally planned.

The interior: There are different saunas (degrees varying, as well as the design and the scent). People find whirlpools, steam sauna, other pools to have a swim in and quiet areas to have a rest or sleep.

I personally didn't like that the shower rooms are open so the person inside is exposed to everyone who walks past it in the main swim area. I don't mind the one next to a sauna, but there should be a sort of privacy. - Once there was a herbal brew a sauna got pretty cramped, so I got out. We only tried one of them in the Pagoda Sauna, which wasn't that well conducted.

We got kinda a weird feeling when we saw that staff put on other people's water bottles a not "that they aren't supposed to drink their water in the interior". So giving everybody the message to buy their drink either at the front desk or in the restaurant to take in some money. If that works? Well, people didn't even bother taking off their towels from the loungers, they have occupied previously. Even a note on each lounger does not make people remove their towels for the next person to be used. We kinda felt controlled and therefore didn't enjoy our stay in the sauna, it wasn't that peaceful and relaxing.

My last commend, the sauna area was clean.

Unfortunately we can't recommend that sauna but whoever wants to give it a buzz, go and have a look yourself.
