Unfortunately, my husband and I were unable to travel with FOD because our cruise was cancelled due to the virus. However, Dave has been in constant communication with us about refunding our money even though he was originally not even in Germany. I have also been so impressed with FOD's concern about their employees and their desire to help them financially. I only hope that at sometime in the future, we can travel with FOD because they are obviously a terrific group of people!

I had several questions when booking a tour for 8 of us. Dave was always very quick to reply and went above and beyond to accolade our group. Sadly we had to cancel our trip and Dave was once again quick to refund the entire amount. When we are able to rebook our trip to Germany we will definitely rebook with Dave. It was a pleasure doing business with this gentleman.

We were two couples arriving in Warnemunde via a cruise ship and after some prior deliberation had decided to forego the suggested ship excursion of 3 hour train travel into Berlin and 3 hour trip back to the ship. We dubbed it the Berlin buster, because of the short tour time in Berlin. Instead we joined Friends of Dave Tours of Warnemunde, Wismar and Schwerin for the day.
We think we made the right decision and had a great time exploring parts of what was once Eastern Germany under the control of the Soviet Union. Our guide spoke excellent English and apparently only did this as a summer job and the rest of the year he was a primary teacher. He had an interesting perspective pre and post 1989 of the transitions that have taken place since the 'Wall' came down.
FIrst we did a short walking tour of Warnemunde and brief history of the area and then a pit stop for washrooms and a free wifi spot for uploading photos, checking email from home and then boarded a bus for Wismar. The tour bus was comfortable and gave us a glimpse at the countryside. As we got closer to Wismar the guide took our pre-orders for lunch at a restaurant from a given menu of about 4 entrees and choice of beverage from soda pop to Pilsner beer. When we arrived in Wismar we did a tour of the market square and a couple of historic churches. Lots of opportunity was given for questions and explanations of local history. We also appreciated having headsets for listening to the guide as he did the walking tours. We were able to get great photos as we walked and a sense of the local culture. The restaurant was in readiness mode when our group arrived and there was very little down time with our meals as they had been pre-ordered. The restaurant had craft beer on site and the entrees for the meal were delicious and filling. We ordered the Pilsner beer which hit the spot for us.
Our next destination was Schwerin where we saw the Schwerin castle, and old market square nearby. Schwerin Castle is unique in its appearance and we thought markedly different than your typical castle - we noted that there were at least two wedding parties that were on site to get their wedding photos taken. After a walking tour of the castle and the old part of Schwerin we stopped in at a cafe for coffee and wonderful pastries about mid-afternoon. Both the lunch at the restaurant and the stop at the cafe were included in the cost for the tour. After Schwerin we boarded the bus and headed back to Warnemunde and made our way to our cruise ship in plenty of time to get ready for evening dinner. It was a great day and a wonderful tour.

Our “Straddling the Wall” tour of Rostock and Warnemünde with Andreas of Friends of Dave’s Tours was way more than we expected in terms of tour guide knowledge, the length of the tour, included lunch and treats, and last but not least the value. Andreas is a super friendly guy who grew up in the area and knows these two towns like the insider that he is. History, where to go with only 3 or 4 hours in each city (without wasting time), the lunch restaurant, the local beers and food, good places to shop (either for a quick 10 minutes during the tour or to return to afterwards), were totally covered. Within an hour we felt like we were walking with a local friend rather than a tour guide.

We cannot recommend anyone more highly than these guys. Do not make the mistake of booking a tour on board your ship; Friends of Dave is not a commercial venture that drags you from place to place on a bus with 40 or 50 other tourists. They only accept up 14 or so people on each tour; so the experience is very personal. You will not be disappointed with this tour content or your tour guide!

The "Complete Hansa Tour" with "Friends of Dave Tours", starring Dave himself is two tours in one, and just a completely fun experience. Dave shows off his new home town of Warnemünde as well as the medieval city of Wismar, connected by an enjoyable train ride. Dave is equally informational and fun to be with; great background and historical overview of the sites, with loads of irreverent, flamboyant comic relief.

This is an ideal tour for a single-day port stop on the northern coast of Germany, a much better day trip out than the long ride to Berlin and back. Save Berlin for a trip when you can spend more time there. For a port stop, however, do Dave's tour.

The tour price is all inclusive: snack, lunch, transport, the hefty German taxes and even local beer! The first person to book a tour date gets to pick which tour. If you are in Cruise Critic, promote the tour in your cruise's roll-call and fill it up.

As part of our cruise, we had the option of staying in Warnemunde, or taking a 6 hour round trip train ride into Berlin. We opted to spend those 6 hours in Warnemunde with a fabulous tour guide named Dave, and have been thrilled with that decision ever since! Dave, an American now living in Germany for the past 18 years, catered to our needs of both worlds by providing us with an insightful, scenic, and history-filled (mostly) walking tour. His sense of humor is uplifting, but never detracted from his knowledge of and love for Germany. Our trip included Wismar, Schwerin, and Warnemunde and was fun, informative and well-worth our time!! We highly recommend the Friends of Dave Tour, and are convinced that by trip's end, you will feel like a friend of Dave's!!

My "Friends of Dave" tour included a visit to Warnemunde followed by a train ride to Wismar, and two more walking tours, one of a medieval area and one of the Gothic quarter. In between there was an included lunch of absolutely wonderful and authentic German food and drink. But if I got a do over, after two days of intensive touring in Oslo and Aarhus I would have spent the day relaxing in Warnamunde instead of taking the train to Wismar, a pleasant enough town but nothing that knocked my socks off.

Warnemunde is a beautiful little seaside resort town. A great place to visit if you don't want to spend most of your day on a non-air conditioned, non-narrated, crowded train ride to and from Berlin. Not much to see in a cultural sense, but pretty streets to wander, a beautiful beach with sand like powdered sugar, and a nude section, if that sort of thing appeals to you.

Dave is certainly an outgoing and resourceful man He saw a business opportunity in a severely underserved tourist market. He's done his research and has full and informative day organized for cruise passengers. He gets rave reviews on messsage boards and limits participants to sixteen people, so book early if you want to join him.

Although I'm sure that my group will add to the adulation, I found much of his silliness to be off putting. Eleven hours of incessant patter about Dave, Dave's ex, Dave's current love interest, Dave's trips, Dave's favorite soccer teams, and on and on, was just about more than I could take. By the time we left our tour at Warnemunde it was all I could do not to run screaming from the train. I emphasize that most people seemed to love his shtick, although I did observe a few eye rolls now and then. For me, however, the day was too heavy on silliness and lacking somewhat in content.

Dave's antics do not come cheap, currently 125 Euros per person. It pains me to state this because I really enjoy tours led by local residents, but for this, I'd recommend doing homework and visiting the area on your own.

Dear Ken, Sorry you were disappointed in the personal nature of my tour or the friendliness that I extend to each and every guest. The name of the company, as well as the extensive personal nature of my website should have left nothing to the imagination. Everything about my site suggests that my tours are different from the typical dry tours that one gets from cruise lines or many other guides. During the eleven hours I am together with my groups, I do extend myself to the group as a visiting friend as well as share information that is not simply about old buildings; it is about my experiences as a 13 year Ex-pat living in two different parts of Germany and the personal experiences are what make the tour interesting for 99.9% of my guests (for the record, yours is the very first negative comment in 4 years. Period. If my jokes were not to your liking, or my plain answers to people's questions were too personal for you (and sorry, but if someone asks me a question I will answer it honestly - that is the promise I make), it should not have come as a surprise; I write this on my website, in your welcome letter, and it is told to you within the first 15 minutes of the tour. (Who of you has ever booked a private tour that sends you a welcome letter as well as information to assist you in your other ports? In my 76 cruises around the world I have never gotten one. Any of you? That personalization is already a part of the tour and the friendliness that I extend). That you consider a UNESCO World Heritage city to be beneath your liking is unfortunate, but hundreds of thousands of people, as well as 900 years of history beg to differ. You have the right to your opinion. I disagree wholeheartedly and would warn anyone from taking your opinion about Wismar's merits. After making room for you on a sold out tour, it seemed odd to the rest of the group that you distanced yourself the entire day and made no attempt at friendliness with the other 16 people present. That of course, is your prerogative, however. I do not think, however, it was my tour that made you unhappy. I would also ask you to be fair in discussing the price. Overpriced? Are you kidding? Where can you go in the Baltic and take an 11 hour tour that includes a coffee and cake stop (with tip for the servers), a full German lunch with an a la Carte menu of amazing food and a large drink (with tip for the servers), transport, admissions and the guide for 102€? Remembering that the 19% German sales tax is included in the price of 125€. Ladies & Gentlemen, I ask you to take this review in the tone it is intended and compare it to those that came before it. As they say, there is just no pleasing some people... but everyone knows that I at least try. Dave

I will begin with one word...FANTASTIC! I knew immediately from TripAdvisor reviews that this was the way to go when not planning to take the arduous journey to Berlin from the cruise ship at Warnemunde. Dave had emailed ahead of time to let us know we would be meeting his associate Christian for our one-day tour and we were treated to the same wonderful experience others had written about. From the get-go, Christian proved to be a perfect host, guide, comic, historian and patient backwards walker. We were riveted to his commentary and he was always aware of our comfort and needs. To live up to his five-star rating, Dave knew exactly who he should enlist for his tour and Christian and his aide Hannes could not have been more accommodating in making our entire day memorable. Warnemunde is a delightful little seaside resort with inviting photo ops, quaint architecture, and a fascinating history. The walk is a perfect pace, the stories lively, and the bathroom stops convenient.
We then boarded a bus to Wismar, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a pleasant addition to this tour. We did not know what to expect and this brick city offered a wealth of history and architecture, on large and small scale. Christian continued to share his knowledge of the history of Wismar, the Hanseatic League (remember your Western Civilization course?) and town's lofty brick cathedral! For lunch, we were taken to an old brewery and enjoyed local brews and fine German food...do not pass up the beef goulash!! It melted in your mouth and I paired it with a nice dark beer!
If this is where the tour ended it would have been more than we ever expected...but then we were off to Schwerin! Who knew that they would have such a magnificent castle, gardens, and opera house? Oh, my! My camera certainly got a workout and I was overwhelmed with the grandeur of old Germany! After the castle visit, we had time in a coffee and cake house on the old town square, opportunity for a walk, and more photos. Christian and Hannes helped us to settle in for our cake break, actually delivering the beers, coffee and dessert (as they helped at lunchtime too)! They got an extra workout and could not have been more helpful.
At the end of the tour in Schwerin, Christian led us briefly through the Jewish quarter where we gathered in front of a former Jewish home. He told the story of the family who had live there and who had been herded off to concentration camps never to see each other again. He told this story with such passion and empathy that I was sad for his generation who has had to live down the legacy of their grandparents. He displayed maturity beyond his 25 years and gave us confidence in a bright future for our young people. Thank you, Christian. And thank you Hannes for the riveting conversation you had with my husband on our drive back to Warnemunde. You are very intelligent young men!!
When Dave's itinerary says 7:15 p.m.- "Cry and say 'til next time"...it truly was a sad parting for my group of eight. My sincerest thanks to Dave, Christian, and Hannes for making our day the very BEST of our entire 11 day cruise...and it was a superb 11 days all around!

Recently my husband , daughter andI had the plaesure of partaking in one of FOD'S Tours. We were initially a little worried attending a shore excursion not connected to the cruise ship mainly for time restrisctions. From the minute we met our guides Dave and Christain this turned out to be one of the highlights of our 5 week trip. Dave's experience attention to detail and honesty saw us experinece East Germany instyle. Our lunch served in alocla brewery was by far the best meal we had all the time we were away". Our guides, were friendly, informative and a pleasure to spend the day with. Although they have done this many times before not once did we feel like it was a tour being rehashed. I now will seek out more private tours in the future as it is a more pleasurable way to spend your holiday. I will definitely look into other tours and cruises offered by the same company.

My family and I booked a tour with Friends of Dave based on Tripadvisor's recommendations. Once again I was not disappointed. Andreas led the day long tour through Warrenmunde and Rostock. He was an exceptional guide who shared his personal experiences growing up in East Germany and the subsequent fall of the communist regime. The pace of the tour was perfect with a cake and coffee break and a wonderful German lunch with local beer. Andreas was patient and genuine, answering all our questions and tailoring the tour to meet our needs. I highly recommend this tour for anyone who finds themselves in this part of Germany.
