- KamedeeNew Orleans, Louisiana24 contributionsDay trip to a Beautiful CastleSchwerin Castle was the perfect shore excursion from Wismar. A short walk to the train station, 9euro's for a RT ticket (special summer travel pass which lasts all month) a 30 minute train ride and you arrive in a quaint little German town with a enchanting castle. Don't miss this!!! If you have seen Berlin or simply don't want to take the 3 1/2 hour each way ride there do this instead. You will not be disappointed. Admission is minimal and the audio guide is 6 Euros, so worth it!Visited June 2022Written June 15, 2022
- sosofarAmsterdam, The Netherlands506 contributionsWell worth queuing up forSchwerin Castle dominates the skyline of Schwerin with its domes, turrets and sheer size. It houses the regional parliament and has a museum which shows a lot of splendour and art. It also has magnificent gardens and sculptures. We decided to visit the museum even though we had to queue up because of the Corona restrictions and social distancing rules. It took us about half an hour to get in but it was well worth the wait. The museum gives a good overview of the history of the Mecklenburg Schwerin dynasty and is full of splendour, artifacts and paintings.Visited August 2020Written August 1, 2020
- Laura WBrighton, United Kingdom403 contributionsGreat castle!I've never been to a German castle, plenty of ruined castles in England, but never a beautiful fairytale German one and I was thrilled! This was really our whole reason for staying in Schwerin, and it definitely added to the trip. We went for a little walk opposite so we could see it in the sunset and it was absolutely beautiful, then the next day we returned for a tour around. There is a lot of information to take in if you're interested, we are more 'pootle along' type visitors and the architecture, decoration etc is a visual feast! We didn't visit the café/restaurant but I will say it was a bit odd to have the smoking booth outside of the restaurant (inside the castle) and I don't approve of smoking in such a historic building. Reasonably priced for a tourist attraction and a good place for a morning/afternoon visit!Visited January 2020Written January 15, 2020

Amazing castle both inside and outside. You can do a self guided tour inside or pay a little extra for a guided tour. We took the Englidh tour (offered once a day) and really enjoyed the wealth of information provided by Theresa. She said it was only the third one they had eve done in English and I am glad we were able to partake of it. The castle is beatifully restored. They have left some rooms as they were when the museum opened so that one could see how it looked. Also most of the castle is occupied by the parliament so you can't see it all but it is still worth a visit. The gardens are beautiful too (and free). It was a rainy day so we did not explore them as much as we would have liked to. It is about 1 hour from Hamburg by tain and then a 20 minute easy walk that takes you through the beautiful Old Town.

We visited Schwerin Castle Garden to see the gardens and the castle from outside. It’s optional to pay an entrance fee of 1€ to the watering can at the gate. If you arrive by car, there are parking spots with a fee closeby (you can use parking ticket machine or Easy Park app). The Schwerin mini train also has a stop right outside the entrance bridge and it’s just around 500 meters from the market square by foot.
The Castle Gardens have a whole lot to see. Lovely trees and flowers, magnificent statues and beautiful architecture. It’s a great place to wander around and discover all the peculiarities of the grounds. In addition to the gardens, you get to marvel the castle itself closeby with its golden details.
Next to the Castle, you can also find other great sights to see: State Museum (at the time of visit temporarily closed), State Theater and Schwerin Victory Column.

On a sunny day the castle shines with golden roofs when you approach it from the centre. With many towers, and surrounded by a beautiful large park, an orangerie with cafe and the lake with boats, is offers an experience as a combination of the historic castles of the Loire in France and the joy of a Disney fairy tale. You can enter on a self guided tour with many splendidly decorated rooms, the staff are very friendly. Entrance fee is moderate. It is a popular attraction for groups but inside there is enough space to walk around undisturbed. The castle church only seems open for a guided tour on special hours.

This castle is beautifully maintained and simply gorgeous. I toured the interior with a hand-held audio guide in English for 8€. In addition to the furnishings and rooms themselves, I was impressed with the original artworks contained in the castle. They were a great introduction to the history of the castle's occupants over time.
The exterior of the castle is equally impressive. Take the time to walk around the perimeter of the building and enjoy the architecture and views across the lake.
Finally, don't miss walking across the bridge to the south and seeing the extensive gardens and surrounding canals. Stunning!

My family had a very good day visiting this castle. We arrived at 11am when the castle was opening. Visit started after a 10 min line. Even with some constructions, the castle can be visited and very friendly people helped inside the different castle rooms.

Be careful bringing your family here. It is a nice castle but we encountered an extremely aggressive guard at the museum. Out og the blue a guard started screaming at me and my family. He was clapping his hands and moving towards us as if he wanted to fight right there in the museum. This kind of behavior is totally unacceptible. Especially since we had kids with us. If he had an issue with us he should have just told us so. Instead he was acting threatening in front of my family.
Luckily my 8 year old daughter stayed at the gift shop and did not experience getting threatened. I do not know how i would have reacted if she had been there.
I will never go back there and i reccomend everybody to conider the possible dangers of going there.

Horrible castle, don't waste your money on the entrance, just see the outside and the gardens, which are all free. Bad reception, rude, ignorant and arrogant ticket clerks. You talk to them in English and they only respond in German and they snort to laugh at you in the face. They reject all the ATMs and credit cards just to see you are a foreigner, regardless, claiming cash payment (in 2022!). To fire the ticket clerks and fine the museum.

2 floors inside the castle are available for the public. Allow 1 hour for the unguided tour. Adult fee €6. Open at 10. There's a max nr of people allowed inside the castle due to covid19. When 2 go out, 2 can go in. Then you know how fast the queue moves.

It's a pompous but nice looking castle. Reminds me the Disney-like Neuschwanstein a bit. We went there on a Monday and it was closed but we walked around it and took a stroll thru the park. Schwerin itself is a pretty nice town.

When we planed were to go in Norther Germany this town and Castle came in at must see, which didnt let us down. The castle also houses the Regional Parliament which was really interesting to see how they had incorporated the old and new together. The old part is well maintained and presented and is a time capsule. The gardens are really lovely, they had a wedding on in the Cafe (which would have been an amazing location) so didnt get to go to this part.

Is parking free at the castle?
Anne
Kerava, Finland800 contributions
We didn’t find any free parking at the castle. There’s no parking on the castle island itself, but there’s paid parking across the field from the castle bridge, in front of the Altstädtisches Palais. You can pay by the ticket machine or Easy Park app. Other paid parking possibilities are also available close by and they’re visible on Google Maps unlike this one.

I believe dogs are allowed if they are on a leash. I have certainly seen quite a few in the park.

Sorry for the English response! There was a cost but since we were on an escorted tour, our guide paid for the group's entry fee. Still, it is a very worthwhile visit.

I am thinking of renting a car or taking the train from Warnemunde Cruise port to Schwerin Castle. What are your recommendations? I also would like to be able to get back the Warnemunde to enjoy the resort area before heading back to the Ship
Elaine H
Rockville, MD244 contributions
I'm afraid I'm unable to offer any better advice than the prior respondent. We took an excellent ship-sponsored tour out of the port of Rostock so everything was taken care of and no worries about returning to the ship on time. I suspect the cost was at least equal to your costs if not less. We enjoyed a nice lunch at a ratskeller, a toy train tour of Rostock, and a tour of Schwerin Castle with a boat ride on the lake. I truly hope your plans work out for you!
