Much of the city wall is still standing along with built in guard houses and a section of the wooden wall walk. Several gates are also standing- Kuhtor (Cow Gate), Monchentor (Monks’Gate), Kropeliner Tor (West Gate) and Steintor (Stone Gate). Only Kohtor has kept its original appearance unchanged since the 13th century.

Arrived at Warnemunde on a cruise ship, and decided to take the train to Rostok rather than the 18 hour Berlin tour. Good decision. Easy to get to, a really lovely old town to walk around. Had a very pleasant day definitely recommended.

We had booked a 1:30pm excursion to other places (which were a bust), so in the morning decided to take a free shuttle from our cruise ship into Rostock and so glad we did! A beautiful city to walk around! Don't miss going into St Mary's church and DO spend the 3 Euro to go to the top (by elevator) of St Peters church. This city is well worth it.

Rostock is a pretty little walled town very easy to walk around. The wall has obviously been built up from what is left of the original fortifications, but it has be done in a respectful way so that you can see and appreciate what it would have looked like. We walked along the Main Street to the tower at the end and then turned left and back on ourselves into a park running along the edge of the old city walls. It was beautifully landscaped and was a great place to stroll and admire the old fortifications.
We got a train to Rostock and it’s only a short walk from the station to the town, very easy to do.

Rostock is the largest city in the north German state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Rostock is on the Warnow river; City centre is directly at the coast of the Baltic Sea.

Rostock is home to one of the oldest universities in the world, the University of Rostock, founded in 1419.

I did not join any organized tour, and came to the city on my own from Warnemunde by train and then by tram to the City Hall Square. Not much of the old town has remained, though part of the city wall still stands. Nevertheless, the architecture and color of the buildings are still interesting and fascinating. St Mary's Church sits at a corner of the Square. It is beautiful and should not be missed. Also, do not forget the St Peter's Church, which is close to the coast. At old times, its tall tower reminded the fishermen and sailors that they were home. It is about 20 minutes' walk from the Square. A pleasant way to spend half a day.

Walked from Rostock Hbf through quiet roads admiring the architecture of the buildings on either sides. The wall looked interesting..

We visited here in early August of 2019 and walked along the city for some distance. There are some nice views of the city outside the walls and it is fascinating to see the city's old defenses.

Just a word of warning, while the Historical Society advertises for $5 Euro, its an unreliable service. We waited last Sunday for the 11am tour, no one showed up

As you walk along town in Rostock it is easy to add on the City Wall to your tour. They are beautifully maintained and full of history.

Our Viator tour was done using SBP Tours and our guide Andreas was excellent.
