If you walk into the city centre from the station, or travel in by tram you'll pass right by it. In fact there is a tram stop next to it. This Gate Tower is a spectacular sight. Do examine both sides though and note the contrast. You'll be in the Market Square within minutes, or already will have been.

Not much to say about a city gate. There are inscriptions, seal and coat of arms you might find interesting.

Even just a quick visit is fine, it's an interesting old town gate very near the market square. Add this as part of a stroll around the Alt Stadt which is in the other direction from the Market Square and the pedestrian walk zone.

This old city gate is very ornate on the side facing inwards but due to a dispute with some duke in the past the outside of the gate is just plain to annoy the duke

For us it was rather an exit, not the entrance to the old town - but it was a pleasure to exit and enter it again ;). On par with same-type structures we have visited in the past, a must if you have not seen any. Well preserved and the direct neighborhood is worth a look as well.

This gatehouse is very interesting in an otherwise quite dull northern German town. I liked the Griffins that flank either side of the entrance. Worth seeing if you stop off on a cruise as was the case with us.

The Steintor (Stone Gate) in Rostok is an example of how heritage can be maintained through attention to the preservation of historical landmarks. Bring your camera as it is picturesque, as is the building next to it.

This beautiful historic gate house of Dutch-Renaisance style sits in the middle of the road and next to a tram stop not far from the town square. It is worth the walk from the square to see it.

Interesting short stop on a visit to Rostock. Part of the old city wall. I asked my kids, to view it from both sides and guess who it was different. It is beautiful on the city side and very simple on the outside. My kids liked the small quiz.
