The Burgplatz is the main square of Braunschweig and one of the few places where you can see how beautiful the town was before it got destroyed in World War 2. Definitely worth a visit pretty much at all times -- if the weather is great you can hang out in the surrounding area with many bars and cafes, if it's bad you can go to the museums or the dome. The best part is the Christmas market in December, it's one of the prettiest you find anywhere around!

The oldest part of the city though most of the buildings had to be rebuilt post-WWII but this was done in the original style so the place still looks medieval. A place to start getting lost in the city's beautiful streets...

Enjoyed our time in Braunschweig and the Burgplatz albeit some years ago. There is so much history here and it's such a pleasant area to visit.

One of the old parts of Brunswick.
An open place, slated, surrounded by old buildings and sights of interest.
If the weather's nice, it's the perfect place to take a walk and admire the "ancient town".
Little shops, cafes and restaurants will make you realise that you can appreciate the old even it is mixed up with the modern.

The oldest part of Braunschweig. A square in the city center surrounded by at leats 500 years of history: Burg Dankwarderode, the Lion of Braunschweig (Löwenstandbild), Dom St Blasii, Dompredigerhaus, Viewegen, Von Veltheimsches haus and Huneborstelsches haus. So amazingly beautiful to feel the greatness of history on such a place. Quite overwhelming when all the bells of the churches started to ring, surely at the same time: we are in Germany!

Come for the architecture, the cathedral, the museum, the lion monument, but don't miss visiting the very small book store tucked away in a corner. The owner sometimes keeps the place shut if the weather looks iffy, because he can't set some of his books out on tables. He does have a solid selection of books on Arctic and Antarctic explorers. Go there!

I visited Braunschweig 3 weeks before Xmas.. the whole city and this location in particular where so astonishingly decorated.. the atmosphere was great.. one could feel a bit overwhelmed, in a good way, by the richness of sensations and feelings.. beautiful things to see, tasty things to taste, lovely sounds to hear.. and the feeling of getting in touch so easily with your inner child..

I also saw back then an unusual Xmas tree.. it was decorated simply with a unique large red Christmas ball.. it was breathtakingly beautiful..
