Though not a big attraction or overly ancient in Rudesheim, this well maintained tower on the main river street at the park entrance-railroad crossing to the River Cruise boat docks is a nice welcome statement. Much of the rest of Rudesheim is threaded among narrow winding streets. Look up and see something here before you enter the Old Town.

Looks better from afar, right by the Rhine and railroad tracks
Makes a nice photo before you head into the old town from the
waterfront.

The white rounded Adlerturm or Eagle Tower stands out at the edge of the old town on Rheinstrasse near the train station. I like to use it as a marker for the beginning of the Rhine promenade which river cruise passengers use to return to their ships.

This 4 storey tower used to be part of the town's fortifications. A very short section of that defensive wall - much lower than the tall tower - is also painted white and is still attached. The tops of both the wall and the tower are crenulated. Both appear to be well maintained. On the tower, regular looking windows appear at each level. The tower rises beyond the roof of the attached bank which is 2 stories high. It was hard to believe that this 20 meter high tower had walls that were 1 meter thick, allowing for an interior diameter of 5 meters. There was a basement under the tower which apparently was once used as a dungeon - an awful thought.

This mid 15th century tower had been converted into an inn by the 1800s, called "Zum Alder", an inn which Goethe liked to use for its views of the Rhine river. Today, the white tower with its pink trim on the turrets is owned by the attached bank, also painted pink. The tower didn't appear to be open for visits. For us, only a photo stop.

The tower on the riverside is a landmark for Rudesheim, along with the Niederwald Monument on the hill.
