If you’re looking for a special day out, go by ferry to the museum, walk through the park, take your time to meet those wonderful characters in the museum! You don’t need to talk a lot, just listen and look and try to get into the sculptures feelings. This is the most relaxing place in Hamburg and besides you will have the chance to meet timeless artwork and a wonderful artist.

The gallery is housed in a 1960s building in a beautiful setting in the grounds of the Jenisch-Haus , also a museum , a visit to which can be combined with the Barlach -Haus If you only know the famous 'Angel' you will be amazed by the collection here , not large but giving a good cross-section of his work , which was assembled by an admirer of Barlach's work , the Hamburg industrialist Hermann Reemtsma . Barlach belonged to the group of artists designated 'degenerate' by Hitler . From time to time there are exhibitions of other artists work , sometimes contemporaries of Barlach ; when we visited it was work by Josef Scharl . The museum is not wheelchair friendly but individual visits can be arranged . From the city take the U Bahn to KLein Flottbeck and walk through the Jenisch Park , taking the entrance by the equestrian showground , a pleasanter route than following the signs along the road .

We had a wonderful quick visit to Ernst Barlach House in Jenisch Park in Hamburg. It's near the Jenisch-Haus (a private home built in the early 1800's you can tour).
The Barlach Haus is a museum dedicated to the Expressionist artist Ernst Barlach. It was built by Hamburg architect Werner Kallmorgen and finished in 1962. It's kind of ugly but it is certainly of the period. The artist has a fascinating personal history, and much of his art was considered "degenerate" by the Nazi's so it's good to see some of it preserved and now protected.

They had moved out 90% of the Barlach collection (to make room for a temporary modern art exhibit) but let us buy the tickets without mentioning this. The temporary exhibit was definitely not our taste.

The standing exhibition of the expressionist sculptures of Ernst Barlach ,”the artist banned.” The collection is impressive, the environment makes you reflect and since there are just a few visitors, nothing disturbs your concentration. In addition, the staff are very friendly and helpful. The Jenischpark is about 15 minutes walk from the Klein Flottbek Station.
