The Landungsbrücken are a "must do" in Hamburg. Nice view over the piers and most of the sights. Of course but also completely full of tourists (like us), sales and food stalls. The obligatory fish sandwich is one of them, but you can get that everywhere.

We walked the entirety of the stroll, as we were staying in Altona. I would recommend it! We very much enjoyed the environment. The boats (albeit industrial, and not particularly picturesque) I thought helped paint the port-town atmosphere and very unlike other Central European cities that I had visited in the past. This place is great for nice walk with good company, a run, or a stroll alone with music.

Instead of taking the expensive harborcruises that depart from the Landungsbruecken I advise you to take the public transport ferry, for example ferry 62. The ferry's depart from platform 1 to 3 almost every 15 minutes. The official harborcruises offer commentary ( most in German, limited to once or twice a day in English ) and get closer to the huge vessels but that comes at a price. If you would just like to explorer a sight at Hamburg from the water, get some fresh air then I would take the ferry. HVV public transport tickets such as the 9 am Day ticket etc are valid, tickets can also be bought at the ship for a couple of euros and are valid all day. It does get busy during weekends and when the weather is good.

Take the number 62 or 63 ferries for a cheap hour-long tour of the harbour. Ferries are included in the all-day HVV U/S-bahn ticket (which cost €6.20 at the time of writing).

Rather than take an actual ferry tour, we caught the no. 62 ferry. Its what the locals use and you can buy a day ticket for 5.60 euro. You can get on and off at the various stops and just relax, have a walk or a coffee. A lovely way to spend the afternoon.

The area around the harbor is just fun! Lots of restaurants and food stands along the dock that sell fresh fried seafood and beer. The view is wonderful as you also get to see many different kinds of ships and boats that port there. If you buy a ticket for any of their public transportation you can also use it to hop on to one of the water taxis which will take a loop around the Elbe River. It's a great way to see another part of Hamburg and enjoy the weather. You can sit on the top of the water taxi so you can feel the fresh air and get some great photos. If you stay on the boat it will eventually return to the port from which you left. It takes about an hour to go all the way around.

I took the number 62 ferry that is part of the Hamburg public transport network, rather than take a canned tour. There is a ticket machine by bridge #3 where the ferry stops. My ticket allowed me to get off and on, plus I got to see regular folks in their everyday life. The ferry goes from Landungsbrucken to Finkenwerder, about an hour round trip. You can see the working harbor, big container ships coming in and out with their tiny tug boats before and aft, and also the neighborhoods that are built above and across the harbor. Some spectacular homes! There is also a tiny stretch of "beach" that a local told me is very popular in the summer. Overall a fun trip and well worth the cost of the transport ticket!

If you have bought a one day ticket for the public transport....go for a cruise on the ferry and the bus 111. It is free with your day's transport pass and is lovely

Just pick up a time table . You can buy an all day ticket for for around €6.50 , this also allow you to use the underground.
Quick and easy way to get over to the other side of the river . If you was to get a taxi trough the tunnel you would be paying approx €20. Each way .

Instead of using the commercial ferries, you can also see the harbour district using the public transport ferry. We had a HVV public transport daycard so we could enter right away. They start at Landungsbrücken Bridge 3, ferry 62, short stops at Altona/Fischmarkt, Dockland/Fischereihafen, Neumühlen/Övelgönne (Elbstrand), Bubendey-Ufer and Finkenwerder and back.
If it is too cold, walk down inside the ferry. There are some other ferries too.
