We stayed in an apartment on the west side of the lake so had plenty of opportunities to wander around the lake. The area feels like you are in the country side - the walkways are shaded by big trees and there are plenty of spots to sit on the grass and relax. Nice views of the lake from all... More

Great way to nose into the gdns of the beautiful houses of Hamburg. There is also the opportunity to be taken into the centre of town. Le Meridien Hotel room key is a free pass, and worth staying there for.

This is a fascinating area. This huge lake has been around for around 900 years. It has a unique character with pathways for walking, biking, or walking. The views are special. The area is lined with treed parks, and lovely buildings. The white buildings with the copper roofs help make this a popular area for locals and tourists. One can... More

Set aside several hours to walk these lakes. There are interesting views all around. Lots of activity and some bar/cafe/restaurants around the lake shore. A pleasant place to spend some time. There are some lovely hotels adjacent the lake near the centre and beautiful houses to look at as you travel.

We caught a taxi from Ibis budget to Miniature Wunderlund, walked to the impressive building of the town hall, then walked to the lake and to the Alster. Although cloudy and overcast the sail boats were sailing which made the lake much more interesting. White swans and a few boat cafes. We walked to St. George catholic church and out... More

A really great place to walk and take in the atmosphere, always a cafe or bar nearby, loads of places to sit and great for dog walkers.

Very good for boat trips or a walk around the lake. Boats are about 19 euros but there is a hop-on hop-off boat which is good velue

in my eyes its a perfect place to go if you planning to visit Hamburg!! The Alster is actually the name of the river that runs into Hamburg city from North of the Airport. It is part of the reason that there are reputedly more canals in Hamburg than in Amsterdam and Venice put together.

In summer the lake is a relaxing place to visit! In the middle of the city you can see all the sailing boats! And in Hamburg you can take the boat as part of the Public transport and reach many places through the Channels! On sunny days it is just an excellent place to visit!
