The heart of Hamburg

Must for all visitors. By traveling on budget you can also visit the Speicherstadt on foot. The other option is with boat from the harbor.

Ended up walking through this historic area. The weather cooperated much of the time and we throughly enjoyed strolling through seeing the various waterways and building. People watching was high on the list. A very good thing to do, even on a cool day.

We wandered around the warehouse district after taking the river taxi. It was a really pleasant walk with some amazing architecture to view also. There are plenty of museums (maritime, ships, spices and so on) to visit if you are interested in museums also. For us though, a nice 2 hour stroll make for a lovely afternoon. Coffee shops along... If you are walking around the city, you have to walk to the Speicherstadt Warehouse District in order to see another side to the city. Today this is where many carpets are stored until transported further into Europe.

At night it's a magical place. Try to find the Poggenmühlen-Brücke and take a look at the two canals who merges in front of you.

So much to see in this area that is fascinating. If you like museums, those are there or close by, too. It's another world here with a fascinating history.

In this largest warehouse district in the world, there are too many to see beyond the old red-brick warehouses along the canal network leading to the port with the new landmark of Elbphilharmonie done by Herzog and de Meuron. Instead of the numerous edgy building in the Hafencity, there are great museums like the International Maritime Museum and the Miniature... More

When visiting Hamburg, this is definitively a place to visit. The place must be even better if the sun is shining but that's unfortunately not something you can order with your travel. Despite that, the place is worth a visit with plenty of spots where you can make a stop for a coffee and/or a piece of cake :-)
