Altona fish market is a treat to the eye. It entertains all kinds of crowds if you are a party animal you can party in the fischmarkt party hall and then drink some freshly brewed coffee and walk the street. If you are looking out for cultural exposure you can grab the most traditional fisch brötchen. Local dwellers can enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables at a very low price and offcourse fishes are the best part of this market. Go early to enjoy the chocolates and fruits auction and late for good discounts.

This fish market has been over 400 years old and is a very old attraction ever since. Weekly on a Sunday there is about 60.000 visitors it is amazing sight and lots of things to buy not only fish - fruits, bred, antiques etc. it is a versatile market and the atmosphere needs to be felt and it my 1st attraction in Hamburg and has been the past 10 years. And my first visit was this summer and I am going there again next for sure.

Yes, people were drinking beer at that hour. But they were also drinking coffee, lots of it. The market is only on Sundays and starts at 5 AM. Supposedly it ends at 10 AM, but I wasn't there at that hour, so I can't prove it. I arrived at 6:30, and the place was packed. It's easy to find your way from the subway to the market; just follow the crowds.

There was lots of food to choose from for breakfast: fresh fruit already cut and sold in plastic containers, lots of pastries, sandwiches of all types - fish, wurst, cheese. Vendors were selling produce, flowers and plants, pasta, candy, in addition to all the fish. There were also clothing and jewelry stalls, as in many markets tourists visit. But the primary crowd was local. I could tell because they were buying things tourists could never carry with them.

It was a lot of fun and worth getting up early to experience.

Decided to try here for our first breakfast in Hamburg. Great for stalls to buy fresh foods and burgers from but not good for sit down meal. This area is very popular with locals on Sunday with most buying fruit and veg, fish fresh and smoked. We ended up on a side street for the sit down meal but not so good. Inside the hall, a band was playing and many people enjoying. We could have sat upstairs but meal was 25 Euro each and was a bit more than we were planning.

This is a favorite place of many residents of Hamburg. Here you can find unique atmosphere. We ate fresh fish and drink champagne under the accompaniment of live music, which is played every Sunday. The market is open every Sunday in the early morning. Locals like to buy here fresh fish and vegetables.

The Fish Market on Sunday morning was definitely my highlight from my weekend away in Hamburg! It is certainly worth setting your alarm for. We managed to get to the market just after 6am, and the stalls were already set up, selling as you might expect - fish, along with breakfast, fresh fruit, flowers, hot drinks, Beer and even champagne!

The main attraction for me was watching the live music in the large warehouse, The music was fantastic. We enjoyed a Rockabilly trio and Foxie B, who played various Rock and Soul classics.

The atmosphere is fantastic and it's the best way to possibly start a Sunday Morning!

It has to be Sunday and you have to get up early but if you are in Hamburg you must experience the Fish Market. This beautiful old building is open at 5.00.am and closes at 9.30.am but in that time you will experience the really unique atmosphere if the Fish Market with its fish breakfasts and excellent bands alternating 1 hour sets. Wash the breakfast down with a pint of beer to get you in the mood and you may even find yourself dancing. All ages, from 18 to 80 were on the dance floor (and the tables) when we were there and many had dressed up for the occasion. Four+ hours of wonderful entertainment all for free. Outside the market is in full swing too until 9.30.am with stalls selling everything you can think of. Set the alarm and make sure you don't miss this treat.

In new tourist guides and websites there was no mention, that the fish auction hall is used since around 3 years as music and event hall. No more fishes there! Luckily the market around it was interesting, else we would have been there at 05.00 am for nothing.

A friend told me to visit this and whilst I was reluctant to get up at 5am I am so glad I did. The place was packed, we got there at 6am and it was in full swing. So fun seeing the people who had been partying the night before on the Reeperbahn that hadn't even gone to bed!! Bought a much needed tasty coffee from Rastafarian mans stall with music playing. I wouldn't necessarily rate what you can purchase there, it was mainly fruit, veg, plants, fish, a few clothing stalls, mainly scarfs. As a tourist I didn't need any of that. The Austion hall had a band playing that were actually really good, people having a dance, drinking beer. You can get a nice breakfast and i had the most amazing freshly baked waffle with powered sugar, to die for! The experience is amazing, there's plenty of time to sleep later!!

Hamburg Fish Market - so much more than fish -
Located on the river bank near the Reeperbahn quarter, today the old Fish Market is a large vibrant market with so much more than fish to offer. Here you can buy almost everything from fish to belt buckles and fruit baskets. Open only Sundays from 5-9am with a number of food and beverage-stands, it serves also as a last stop for the late-night party crowd heading home from the clubs as well as the early-riser tourists up at the crack of dawn to experience this place. No matter which category you fall into it is truely a unique attraction. Indeed, the only fish market I ever visited playing loud club music for it's either sleepy-eyed or even tipsy clientele 😁
Approching the iconic red-brick building you can treat yourself to the renowned, freshly måde, over-the-country foods. Whether your stomach is up for trying the famous herring sandwich at this early hour, I let you decide for yourself, but it comes highly praised😊so - rise and shine to see this attraktion - it truly is worth loosing a few hours of sleep over.
