- NICHOLAS TDubai, United Arab Emirates10,928 contributionsFull of lifeThis is a must visit if you are in Hamburg on a Sunday morning. There are a huge number of outdoor stalls selling food, drinks and nick nacks. The highlights are the delicious fish offerings. There was a band in full flow in the old fish market hall which also offered two full bars and coffee stall. Great fun!Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 15, 2024
- Norberto AMadrid, Spain1,504 contributionsGo early in the morning because it's like the Trail at rush hour. 8.30 ideal.A must have for a Sunday morning. The atmosphere is very good, curious -like me- and tourists basically. There are stalls of everything: local sausages, saltings, sweets, pastries (is what I would recommend) coffee... For any average Spaniard it is not surprising at all, as the market in Aluche, Madrid, surpasses it in product. Clothes are expensive, and more of the same. In the enclosed enclosure there is German Rock to the beat of a hot drink.Visited August 2024Traveled soloWritten August 19, 2024
- Ann CNashville, Tennessee3,384 contributionsAltonaer FischmarktTA notes it opens earlier than it does, in winter it opens at 07:00, closes 09:30. I had a wonderful experience at the Altonaer Fischmarkt. While the city was still waking up, I enjoyed a peaceful walk from my hotel to the market. The early morning atmosphere was charming, with live music filling the air inside one of the market buildings. The market offered a wide variety of items—fresh, warm fish sandwiches, fresh seafood, meats, cheeses, pastries, flowers, colorful produce, cozy warm beverages, plants, clothes, and even candy. What stood out the most was the local vibe and lively energy of the place. It felt like a hidden gem where locals gather to enjoy the sights, sounds, and flavors of the morning. I highly recommend visiting if you're in Hamburg, especially for the unique and authentic experience it offers.Visited December 2024Traveled soloWritten December 3, 2024
- Frau GNorth Rhine-Westphalia, Germany12 contributionsI'm fine. Were at the Hamburg fish market for the first time. Overall, it was quite nice, but apart from a few fish stalls and 3 market criers, the market is not different from other weekly markets in my opinion (too much Made in China junk is sold). But of course the location still creates a "hamburgish" atmosphere. The meatball bun and the chocolate cinema were delicious! Definitely can be done, but this very special character was a bit missing.Visited December 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten December 28, 2024

Of course you have to get up early to take advantage of the Sunday morning market (from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.) but it's worth it because the atmosphere is warm. There are lots of people and all kinds of products, not just fish. They sometimes sell inexpensive lots that attract crowds (chocolate, biscuits, green plants, etc.). And at the end of the market towards Altona, we discover the Fischauktionshalle, where an orchestra plays wild rock and people of all ages dance while many drink beer. It's free, it's huge and it's full, with a good atmosphere. Do not miss!

Hamburg is a city that I would define as "colourful" even if it is cold, even if the sky is grey, because every corner is a discovery. Furthermore, it is a "coldly welcoming" city: you go from the Fischmarkt where the sellers shout and offer you anything to the pub or restaurant where you order and no one asks you anything. Hamburg is not interested in you and you can do what you want, Hamburg is you that becomes interesting

Hey folks,
in the past and in the past, of course everything changes over time, it was great, well, it still has its Hamburg charm, drinking a coffee at 5 a.m. and watching the hustle and bustle.
The currywurst so early, everyone likes it, the flower corner, here too, the shouting is something about that time, headaches come and go, I think everyone chooses what they want, enjoys it and obviously has fun. I think after 50 years, every now and then, you can treat yourself to that, a lot of fun.

On each visit to Hamburg, the walk is through the fish market program. My son is an absolute fan of the fish market and is especially fond of the market criers of the chocolate and fruit truck. Every time he is happy about bulging bags which are available at 15,-€ each on the trucks. This time, however, big disappointment, as we had to throw away more than half of the fruit at home, as it was already rotten.

Altona fish market is a treat to the eye. It entertains all kinds of crowds if you are a party animal you can party in the fischmarkt party hall and then drink some freshly brewed coffee and walk the street. If you are looking out for cultural exposure you can grab the most traditional fisch brötchen. Local dwellers can enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables at a very low price and offcourse fishes are the best part of this market. Go early to enjoy the chocolates and fruits auction and late for good discounts.

Great to visit and worth getting up early to do. It was dark for our visit and wet but still a good atmosphere and great stalls. Also a bonkers rock concert at 8am! Very authentic and had we not been going back to hotel for brekkie we would have enjoyed some here (we did but lovely fruit and fish rolls for later!).

This fish market has been over 400 years old and is a very old attraction ever since. Weekly on a Sunday there is about 60.000 visitors it is amazing sight and lots of things to buy not only fish - fruits, bred, antiques etc. it is a versatile market and the atmosphere needs to be felt and it my 1st attraction in Hamburg and has been the past 10 years. And my first visit was this summer and I am going there again next for sure.

Yes, people were drinking beer at that hour. But they were also drinking coffee, lots of it. The market is only on Sundays and starts at 5 AM. Supposedly it ends at 10 AM, but I wasn't there at that hour, so I can't prove it. I arrived at 6:30, and the place was packed. It's easy to find your way from the subway to the market; just follow the crowds.
There was lots of food to choose from for breakfast: fresh fruit already cut and sold in plastic containers, lots of pastries, sandwiches of all types - fish, wurst, cheese. Vendors were selling produce, flowers and plants, pasta, candy, in addition to all the fish. There were also clothing and jewelry stalls, as in many markets tourists visit. But the primary crowd was local. I could tell because they were buying things tourists could never carry with them.
It was a lot of fun and worth getting up early to experience.

Decided to try here for our first breakfast in Hamburg. Great for stalls to buy fresh foods and burgers from but not good for sit down meal. This area is very popular with locals on Sunday with most buying fruit and veg, fish fresh and smoked. We ended up on a side street for the sit down meal but not so good. Inside the hall, a band was playing and many people enjoying. We could have sat upstairs but meal was 25 Euro each and was a bit more than we were planning.

This is a favorite place of many residents of Hamburg. Here you can find unique atmosphere. We ate fresh fish and drink champagne under the accompaniment of live music, which is played every Sunday. The market is open every Sunday in the early morning. Locals like to buy here fresh fish and vegetables.

Moin an Ilse_Ludwig,

Viel Erfolg.
