Saint Catherine is anything but baroque fireworks. Historical reference to the Reformation in all its glory (you don't get much of that in the church), this sacred space leaves you rather perplexed in its dimension and nakedness. We think you can do without the visit.

Very impressed with the inside of this church. Not only does it have a pretty ceiling but it also has a lot of original artwork, making it rather like an art gallery.

Hauptkirche St. Katharinen is a very nice church located in the old town of Hamburg, where you can see amazing stained glasses. For me it is one of the best churches in Hamburg and it is very recommendable visit the inner part.

Hamburg has 5 main churches with St Michael, Petri and the ruined Nicholai being the main focus points but make the time to check out St Katharinen. A very old church near the deich Strasse district. The church is quite simple inside with the large organ that dominates from the rear end. I'm told that in earlier times the church was part of an older, poorer district in Hamburg and was frequented by many sailors as part of theirs christenings and confirmations. Another tip I discovered was that Bach played the church's organ and in homage the are a series of Zappa plays Bach cd's made in live recordings in the church available in the foyer - really worth a listen especially if you are into either Bach or Zappa.

Walking down we saw the church. Did not find it amongst the top attractions. Yet, so close, we ventured in to see the treasures and beauty therein.

Stained glass is very ornate as the carvings of the doors. Definitely, worth a visit and spend an hour or more. The view of the city from the top would be fantastic but that is not permitted.

Although it doesn’t look like much on the outside, just like a normal church, on the inside it has some kind of arty exhibition with pictures and drawings hanging form roe walls, that seemed to be some kind of representation of the bible story. Spectacular! The hanging art was my favourite bit. The church inside is quite beautiful, white and simple, spacious and, empty when we were there, with amazing stain glass and big carved wooden doors. The wooden (and metal) organ was also beautifully carved, with little statues on the top. The staff were also very friendly, as they told us how to get to the Michaeliskirche from here, which is about just one kilometre. Unfortunately though you are not allowed up to the top. But worth visiting! It has a characteristic black spire.

Raised in the 13th century, St. Katharine's Church traditionally served as the fishermen's church. Partially distroyed during an air ride during the WW2, it was rebuilt, however, the outer wall and the base of its spire are original. Ornated with angels and the priceless wood carved figure St. Katherine, the interior finishes date from the late 20th-century reconstruction of the medieval church.

St. Catherine's Church is one of the five main churches and was a profile for sailors. Sea service is full of dangers, so sailors are superstitious people and attended Church before sailing. I didn't go inside. God did not save the Church during operation Gomorrah. American B-17s and British Lancasters were stronger than divine intercession and on July 30, 1943 left only the outer wall of St. Catherine. The reconstruction of 1950-1956 appears before us .
