very well organized, map explains everything, what I like the most is the app, not only using it for the audio guide, but also it shows the painting photo along in high detailed resolution
you can download it for free before coming to the museum.

as for the paintings, they cover a little bit of everything as genres.
if you are into impressionism, don't leave it till the end (the way I did) just start with it, because it would be in the last rooms of the journey

Excellent museum with a wide range of paintings. Get an application (you can even download it on free wi-fi at the museum) and listen to nice and informative audio guides. Even if you have no headphones the app works well and doesn’t disturb other visitors.

Went there at the end of July with five children (age 6 - 14) and we spent 2 1/2 hours there. Amazing collection and exhibitions, even some VR. Currently, there is 'Series' with Andy Warhol and 'Back then has always been now'. And Raphael for the ones who love him. Plus, you have got great views across the Alster.

I was in Hamburg for business for two weeks and I had one free afternoon where I was amazed and delighted by this museum. The art was stunning and galleries intimate and packed with pieces so I was able to feel like I saw an incredible amount in a short time. Note there are minimal bathrooms so plan accordingly.

Not much to write about, this is a must for all art lovers visiting the city. Sometimes a bit difficult to orient, so I recommend to follow the direction indicators properly so not to miss anything.

Thursday evening is half-price (open till 9pm), the shop well-equipped but incredibly expensive.

Beautifully displayed, many famous pictures across the centuries, in an amazing building easily reached in the Center of Hamburg. As far as we could tell, free of charge every first Thursday evening of the month from 6-9pm. Absolutely worth the visit

This was somewhat underwhelming but maybe we’re spoiled by visits to other museums.
No pop art mentioned specifically in the ‘Sixties’ exhibition downstairs, with just one obscure Warhol. Nowhere to sit and contemplate in modern art area, despite vast rooms.
No knockout works, minor Edvard Munch, a Picasso, very few blockbusters.
Ho hum.

The exhibitions are really great, offering a comprehensive tour through the history of art from the 1400s onwards.

The only complaint I have is regarding the shop.
First, the collection of wall prints is disappointing, in contrast to all the beautiful paintings the museum has to offer. The wall prints are either of old exhibitions or of popular paintings, a few of paintings from the museum, but a lot of very popular paintings such as van Gogh's starry night and others like this - although the museum has no van gogh.
Second, the shop is unapproachable if you're a foreign tourist who doesn't speak German, and you're looking for a book. The museum's shop has absolutely no book in English, unlike other art museums in Berlin, Munich, etc.

If you’re under 25, it’s free admission. They’re celebrating 25 years and it’s a great deal. My friend and I went twice because we couldn’t finish the entire tour and also because we really loved the art. Truly the best art museum I’ve ever been to! Even if you don’t like the art, the architecture of the building is also very picturesque!

Amazing collection, intimate galleries. Easy to loose each other so pay attention to your small ones... but great if your group is older and has different interests. Has some of my favorite paintings - must see if you are in Hamburg: "Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer"-Casper David Friedrich
