Nice collection
Aug 2020
The gallery has a nice collection of paintings.
Obviously the main attraction is Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer from Caspar David Friedrich but there are many more other paintings from artists such as Manet, Picasso and Rembrandt.

A wonderful building for showing art
Jul 2020 • Couples
A very impressive building well suiten for its purpose of showing art. The collection has a few very good pieces - especially from the 19th century and early 20th century. And quite a lot decent art altogether.

They have a wing which is more of an educational part where you can learn about the lightning og a piece of art, how presentation can affect how a painting is viewed and so on which was really good.

To get to the really modern part you have to go through the basement and up. They advise you not to use the elevator (due to Covid-19) which means you have to climb quite a few very long staircases. I’m not sure that was worth the effort. The exhibition called «Trauern» took up two floors (1st and 3rd?) - but was well passed my understanding.

Fantastic collection
Jun 2020
What a great museum. It is easy to follow the 'tour' from the medieval altars through the nineteenth century up to the modern art. In the adjacent small galleries you will find more paintings, but following the route gives you an excellent overview of the art history. Strong in German art of course, think the famous Caspar David Friedrichs and Otto Runge, and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, but also quality works by Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rossetti's smalll but excellent Helen of Troy, Odilon Redon and Edvard Munch, to name but a few. Well presented, for connaisseurs and families alike.

600 years of art history
Mar 2020
Not many galeries offer such a wealth of paintings, spanning over such an ark of art history. Both german, flamish and italien masters from the 15-hundreds to the 19th century can be observed, and an impressive collection of impressionism, expressionism and modern art is also worth spending time at.

Great variety
Mar 2020
There is so much to see and a LOT of variation. Both the modern and the classic galleries were excellent and really gave an impression.

Great place

A very nice museum with lots of pictures, some of these of world fame. The temporary exhibition of impressionism surely had exquisite work. Check for discounts such as Thursday evening (if only I didn't leave that day)

Excellent museum
Jan 2020
This museum, which on the outside looks a lot smaller than it is, has a great display of various art pieces.

The architecture also adds to the experience and were also fair in its entry price.

Never thought I would go to Mannheim and get such an experience.

A very fascinating museum
Sep 2019
The Hamburger Kunsthalle gives a good impression about art work over the last centuries. Starting with the entrance hall with its great design the history of the musuem itself is also very interesting.

Very interesting artworks
Aug 2019 • Family
Beautiful museum and pride off the city of Hamburg. We were not convinced about the contemporary art installation and art pieces, but the other works are very interesting and include pieces from the Italian Renaissance to French impressionist period, Picasso and the 20th century. There are a lot of German painters represented here between 19th and 20th century.

Shocking artwork
Oct 2019
It happened to be a special festival that day, so it was free to visit.
The first time I saw a large number of artworks from various periods, I was really shocked.
In the era when the camera was not invented, artists could paint pictures like photos.
Really amazing me.
The venue line and equipment are very professional and attentive.
Unfortunately, because of the crowds, I felt a bit messy inside the exhibition hall.
Hope that there will be a limit on the number of visitors when there are free visits.
