The “Rickmer Rickmers” had a checkered history as a freighter and training ship until she came to Hamburg and was completely restored as a museum ship. It offers a good insight into the hard and spartan life of ordinary sailors in unhealthy conditions on sailing ships. Only the ship's officers had a better time. All this and the technology of that time, which already had a small steam engine to support work on board, can be seen on the upper deck and in the museum in the lower deck.

Fascinating insights into commercial sailing in historic nineteenth century rigger which has seen service around the world. Built in Bremerhaven it has returned home to become iconic landmark museum after extraordinary rescue and restoration. Lots of big and small exhibits of life on board, crew, cargo and destinations.

This old metal hulled cargo boat represents the transition from sailing vessels to steamers. It is now a museum with displays of maritime culture. Signage is available in both German and English. I spent a little more than an hour exploring the upper and lower decks of the ship.

I visited expecting a fairly dull visit, though was pleasantly surprised. There isn’t much to see or do on deck (unless you’re climbing the rigging) though once you’re below deck there are engaging displays as well as interesting exhibits. Definitely worth the price of admission (though note it’s cash only).

Having got a sweat on running towards the famous and intriguing rickmer( so good they named it twice) my enthusiasm was dented by a burly woman who was probably angry she only placed third on a German Anne widdercombe with a dodgy haircut- look-a-like competition. As she rudely told us it was closing at 6, even though it was only 5:15!! Shame I was looking forward to this!!

We decided to visit this museum ship as we still had some time to kill before seeing a musical show across the harbor. We paid 3,50 Euros as students, and we got a nice glimpse of what seafaring must have been like in the past. You can see the crew chambers on the one side and the officers' rooms on the other, and you can learn a lot about the history of this particular ship. It is amazing to know that she even went to Hong Kong and was captured quite a few times by other nations.

We do not have a particular passion for ships, but it was a nice trip for around one or one and a half hours. There are plenty of options to get a discount (HamburgCard, student, people with disabilities, groups...) and many of them can even be combined.

You have to see this ship! You get a lot of new and interesting information about the ship, the owner(s) and their history, which I enjoyed very much.

This is absolutely a place to go! There was no line, not crowded, and also very interresting if you have some interests towards the sea and boats in general. Both outside and inside the ship you can learn a lot about seafaring. Having visited other old ships, I specially appreciated the "20th century side" of this ship. Fair price, and you can easily spend a couple of hours here. Having some skills in german language is however helpful, but not nescessary.

We spent about 90 minutes here including a coffee in the restaurant. There is an information sheet in English which gives the history of the ship and it's quite a moving story - when the ship was eventually brought to Hamburg for refurbishment by volunteers it was in a very sorry state. It's not sorry now though, it's immaculate. You also learn a lot about what it was like to be a sailor, the crew and officers' quarters have been recreated and it's quite an eye-opener. There are some interesting photographs in the museum too.

Rickmer Rickmers was built for the Rickmers Line (Bremerhaven) in 1896. She was used on the Hong Kong route but was sold in 1912. Since then she was sailing under different flags and owners until she came to Hamburg in 1983 renamed Rickmer Rickmers.
RR is a nice museum ship moored at the "Landungsbrucken". You can walk around the deck but you also can see the cabins of the crew under deck. On a lower deck there is a small museum and even a restaurant was established on board. I really can recommend this restaurant. Food and service are excellent. RR is a four point attraction but the restaurant is worth the fifth point.
Entrance fee € 4. No need to pay entrance fee if you just visit the restaurant.
