This large square is one of the main gathering areas in town. One day there was a fitness fair, the next there was a protest march. There are tourist shops on the square. I found better prices a few blocks away.

There cannot be many town halls like this in the world.
Absolutely stunning in every respect.
The area around the town hall is a shoppers paradise if that is your thing.
Every major band from prada gucci armarni etc is located in the vicinity.

Rathausmarkt is a public square, dominated by the town hall to the west and the picturesque to the north and many fine cafes and restaurants around it. No visit to Hamburg is complete without visiting the Rathausmarkt.

Visit this place during Christmas and you would find as if the whole world has arrived at one place. It is so nice to see the arrangement where only local shopkeepers are allowed to set stalls. You would not find the glamour of malls here, but the care seems to be in the air.
Sip some coffee at one of the stalls, or munch a few Pretzels, buy hand made goods - all at one place. Just outside, exactly at 8 PM, you can see Santa's chariot passing over your head. That is special attraction for this market.

This was my first arrival off the train from the airport, and so was my first view outside an airport in continental Europe. I couldn't have asked for a better place to start.
The view of the Rathaus government building is amazing.
There is easy access to the U train, as well as the Red Tourist bus and HVV bus station.
There are usually food vendors there. I recommend you stop at the one owned by Klaus and his beautiful daughter. Such a nice family, I wish they hadn't been out of currywurst late at night.
The week we visited, there was a large movie screen set up for nightly movies that started around 10 p.m. While some of the movies shown were family-friendly, not all the previews and short movies before the main feature were.
Sunday mornings before 1 p.m. there are very few people around.
If you found this helpful, please click the thumbs up! :)

Rathausmarkt is a great place if you wanna grab something German to eat - many types of ''Wurst'' and the ice cream is delicious. Preferably go on summer! On evenings there is a open-air cinema.

We spent four days in Hamburg following a cruise in August and we absolutely loved this city. We stayed near the Kennedy Bridge on the AussenAlsterSee in The Atlantic Kempenski Hotel. This placed us near the Hauptbahnhof (if you wanted to zip over to Berlin or elsewhere), and within a few minutes walk of the Rathausmarkt. This is a great square in front of the Rathaus (which is in itself a beautiful building and worthwhile attraction. All around the markt are little stalls where you can buy Wursts or pretzels or ice cream, beer or wine and so on. The weather was beautiful and it seemed as if all of downtown Hamburg was milling about, sitting and drinking or eating The energy there is upbeat, and I just enjoyed walking around with everyone else walking around. Every day we walked there. There is a little fast food place just off the Platz (market) which has the best ice cream ever, made in house. All the main stores are there. And just walking around the area looking at the stores was fun. German design is modern and special and fun to look at. The architecture is interesting, old juxtaposed against new. There are beautiful old brick churches and the two Sees, the InnenAlster and AussenAlster. The inner one is mainly for walking around and enjoying. The outer is full of white sails lounging and darting about the water.
These two bodies of water make Hamburg special. The Molj is a good place to get your hair cut.
It's a block from The Atlantic. If you like good shoes, German shoes are beautifully made and styled nicely, but for real feet that really walk. The energy of the people seemed upbeat but not frenetic. There are loads of places to sit outside and eat or have a beer or wine. There are loads of people with their dogs (but you don't see poop or pooper scoopers) and so the town seems people friendly. There is a darker side to Hamburg--homeless under the Kennedy Bridge and a little tent city in a square downtown (like the Wall Street squatters). St. Pauli is not a part of town i liked at all. But I don't know when I've enjoyed a city as much as Hamburg. It is filled with canals and the two artificial Sees (or lakes) made by widening the river. It has more bridges because of the canals than does Venice. It's a special atmosphere, and the RathausMarkt Platz seemed to us to be the center. All the things I've mentioned are walkable from their and it makes a good central point for your Hamburg walkabout adventures.

The Hamburger Rathaus is one of the must-see destinations in the City. Try to peek inside the city hall while you are there. The impressive building documents the wealth and prosperity that made this harbor city a key member of the "Hanse" trade organization. Look up and notice the stunning details in the architecture. The inner court behind the building contains a beautiful fountain. Definitely worth a visit - and no entrance fee.

What a beautiful square! The Rathaus itself is a piece of art, so magnificient. The square lively and wonderful, with people coming and go, or just hanging around.

Are there any special events there during easter time like they do during xmas? If yes, does anyone have an idea the starting and ending date for easter 2019?
Written November 5, 2018
I only know about the wine village in the summer, the Gourmet week in late dinner and the Christmas market from beginning of December to Christmas taking place on the Rathaus Markt itself
Written November 5, 2018
We are coming on 25 November but the main reason for coming was to see the christmas markets which we have now discovered aren't starting until Monday the 27 th, I am so upset to miss this does anyone know if the normal markets in front of the Rauthaus will be on or will they just be setting up for the Xmas markets.
any advice would be greatly appreciated,I wouldn't normally do a city break in November because of the weather.
Written November 14, 2017
The Christmas markets don't normally open until the first week of Advent, so I'm afraid your visit of Nov 25th is just a little too early. The cabins will all be in place but they'll be setting up, not trading until 27th. The first Hamburg Christmas parade is on Saturday Dec 2nd.The Rathaus itself will be open when you arrive, but tours in English are normally dependent upon numbers, so best ask at the enquiry desk inside. Same dates go for Lubeck and Bremen markets.

Don't think so
