Went for an early evening stroll at dusk after dinner nearby. Too many large groups of teenagers / youths hanging about drinking too feel entirely safe. Nothing happened, but it was so uncomfortable we cut our walk short.

A nice river, almost like a lake because of the very low flow. You can walk around it or rent a small boat and navigate on it. A nice place to visit if you are looking for nature in the city.

Inner Alster is the smaller lake facing the Hamburg's city centre. There are some magnificent buildings along Jungferstieg and a fantastic fountain in the centre of the lake. It is very close to the busy and hustling city centre. Great place to relax with many restaurants/cafes to sit and enjoy a cold pint of beer in a sunny July day. Great place to walk around , to hire a row boat or to take a tour by boat.

This is one of the better places to run/walk in the city. I ran around the Alster lake several times. It has great views and not many people during the week. I also appreciated that most of the perimeter is a compacted, dirt-based trail as opposed to concrete. I would recommend this route for any runners that want to explore Hamburg.

This is a beautiful part of Hamburg.

There are two connected lakes, one large and one smaller. There is lots of wildlife, in particular geese and swans. There are a large number of parkland areas around the lakes as well as lots of stunning residential buildings and great eating and drinking options.

The area is very close to the commercial/ retail centre of Hamburg.

The center of Hamburg is marked by two lakes, called The Alster and Aussen Alster. These two lakes are divided by two bridges.

While The Alster is the central point, buzzing with activities all round the year, Aussen Alster is the serene place, which has a circumference of about 7 KM. Another perfect leisure place. If you are into jogging or boating, there can not be a better place than this.

All around the periphery you would get the most wonderful landscape and one side of the Alster is dotted with best of the hotel chains of the world. It is a unique experience to have a walk around it on a sunny day and I must say it is a photographer's paradise.

If you are short on time, do plan to spend at least a couple of hours around it. A must see.

This is right by the city hall square. The waterfront is beautiful, perfect for taking a walk, simply sitting and running.

Anice walk along the lake on a sunny day. Gets you away from most of the hustle and busle of a busy city. Except on a sunny Sunday that is!

Whenever I travel to Hamburg I make sure to pack my running shoes. The Aussenalster is one of the most beautiful tracks to go running in the center of a city. You will always see other runners regardless of time of the day. There are water dispensers available shall you become thirsty during your exercise
I stay at either the Moevenpick Hotel Hamburg (Sternschanze) or the Radisson Blue to go for a run here.
For those who like it more relaxed, walking is nice there too.

Hamburg is the second biggest city in Germany and the second biggest harbor in Europe. So, it's a hustle and bustle you expect from such cities.
However, it occupies a pretty big lake right in its center, the Alster Lake. It consists of two parts - the inner and outer Alster. These is a totally another world - you can relax walking its shores, hiring a small boat,...and enjoy peace with great city views.
