In central Hamburg, Planten un Blomen park is a natural gem that connects the inner city shopping streets with Hamburg convention and exhibition centres. In another words, it is a link between the beautiful Outer Alster lake and the Elbe river.
This park speaks of its name. Planten un Blomen is Low German and translates to 'Plants and Flowers'. The park offers variety of flower beds, herb gardens and vast lawns. Idyllic ponds as well as themed gardens are a popular time-out spot for tourists, locals and university students alike.
With access to central Hamburg, the park is never far away. From west to east you can walk to the Neustadt quarter with its busy shopping streets and restaurants or the more alternative St. Pauli quarter.
For more exotic plants and trees, the greenhouses are open year round. Vistors can enjoy biotopes resembling tropical rainforests, dry deserts and everything in between even with the park covered in snow and the lakes frozen over.
In the wintertime and as soon as it gets very chilly, the ice-skating ring starts to draw crowds. However in the Summer, visitors can go for a game of miniature golf or outdoor chess.
Finally, when the sun sets over Hamburg, this park is ideal fir a picnic dinner, lie on the grass and watch the water features. The combination of illuminated fountains and classical music creates a heck of an experience.

It would have been a one day thing but I got short on time and wanted to see the Hamburg Museum since did a once over the park area and missed the Greenhouse area. So today, I took the time to get better directions and took a bus. It was walkable from my hotel but I wanted to try finding my way with transit.
The park is nice and I think it will be lovely when spring and summer hits.
Wonderful to be so close to the city and get some moments of respite from hustle and bustle.
Ponds and all kinds of walk paths are available.
Close to public transit.

This is really a wonderful place to spend half a day wandering around watching all the beautiful flowers and wonderful old trees. There are several cafes where you can have a snack, and several playgrounds if you come with kids.
There are areas with different themes - a japanese garden, an apothecary garden with herbs and a rose garden to mention a few.
Free enterance.

We saw a red squirrel, nuthatch, terrapins etc in this beautiful park. Lots of lovely water features, trees & plants with lots of seating thoughtfully scattered around and at cafes. A super spot that we really e noted exploring with the locals on a sunny day. Wonderful and a definite must.

I went at the late in Sept, there was not a lot going on in the park.
I saw lots of people enjoying the park, singles, families and couples, and dogs.
It has lots of restrooms, benches artwork and water features.
It has a chess area including a giant chess board, mini golf, play grounds for the kiddos, skating rink and a Zip Wire.

Beautiful gardens & small lakes in central Hamburg.
Option of visiting the glass houses as well.
Nice to stroll through or go for a run.
Plenty benches and areas to sit for picnics.
Playparks for children.

Great botanical gardens. I walked round in ~3 hours but wish I’d been able to spend the whole day relaxing there. Free to enter. Japanese garden and rose garden particularly nice. And plenty of seats facing lovely water vistas.

Planten un Blomen is maybe the biggest park in Hamburg... if you are a nature lover you can go there and spend the day in between the trees and grass and for Hamburgers Planten un Blumen is the place to relax and maybe sunbathe on a hot summer day(doesn't happen a lot) the most interesting thing that I have seen and want to go again to see it is the Wasserspiel (water playing) dancing fountains with the music, it happens every friday or saturday i am not sure at about 9.30 pm and lasts for 30 minutes and you will find people from every where in Hamburg; tourists and non tourists come to see it on that day... so don't forget your video camera and arrive early to find a good place

Having struggled to find any information on exactly where the water and light show is in the park when we were on a time limit I wanted to post directions as follow the crowd isn't helpful!
The lake where the show happens is in the top part of the park by the Raddison Blu Hotel. If you go in the entrance by the conference centre there and turn right and continue on this path you will find the lake.
The show itself is a fun 30 minute light show and it has a great atmosphere!

Hello, the water colors concert in Planten un Blomen takes place from to, daily from May to September. It starts at 22h00 from May to August (with the exception of the opening of the season on May 1st, at 21h00), and during september at 21h00.
It is not the same everyday, since the theme and music change every two weeks. On August 17th, Mendelson's concert will be played.
You can also see the water concerts, without lights, daily at 14h00, 16h00 and 18h00 during the season.

I have no idea. But as there are several arrangements during summertime I would not be surpriced if there will be arrangements also this time of the year. //Niklas
