- VierdankStockholm, Sweden5,112 contributionsReally maritime and really internationalThis place is huge! Nine floors to cover, which takes it time if you have the ambition to be thorough. But you don't have to be - works just fine to be selective. This museum differs from many other maritime museums by really having an international aspect of the exhibitions and the history told. Which makes it more interesting, since you can see and do "cross references" in a bigger perspective than usual. Recommended for both old and young - even though it's a bit expensive: 13€ for adults...Visited February 2020Written March 8, 2020
- Melinda Sabo10 contributionsA really interesting museumAlthough many people were complaining that the Maritime Museum it's just too big and boring, I had a great time there. It is true that you just cannot go through everything in one visit, but if you select the topics that are of great interest, you can spend some valuable time inside. I visited levels 1,4,6 related to navigation and communication, the life on board and passenger and good shipping and I felt like learning a lot. Highly recommended!Visited March 2020Written March 20, 2020
- Michael B131 contributionsWhat a Fascinating MuseumTo start, the museum was open on Christmas day, which was very nice. We started with a fish lunch at the great "Catch of the Day" restaurant, and then spent four hours in the museum. I was totally fascinated, and would have spent another two hours had closing time not arrived. I feel that this is a must visit museum!Visited December 2019Written January 4, 2020
- love2travel_uk_fWest Sussex, United Kingdom101 contributionsFantastic Museum...just a shame about the lack of English in some partsWow this musuem is amazing! It is 10 floors packed from floor to ceiling! My husband and I spent all afternoon there but you could spend a whole day there. We liked the fact that it really did have an international feel, with exhibits from all over the world, except for the fact that only some of the wording was in English. I know we were in Germany but a museum of this type does really appeal to people from all over the world, so it would make sense to have more English translations. That is the only reason that I am marking it 4 starts not 5 stars. Tip....half way round the museum follow your noise to find the little coffee stop. Yes it is out of a machine, but the coffee was lovely and it is certainly nice to have a sit down halfway through a museum of this size!Visited December 2019Written January 8, 2020
- Jonathan H1 contributionA brilliant museumThis is the best Maritime Museum I have visited. Whatever you might wish to know about seafaring, warships, naval technology, navigation, maritime history - it is all here. My only regret is that I just had two or three hours here on the last day of my visit to Hamburg. I could easily, and happily, have spent a whole day in this museum alone. If you have any interest in matters maritime this museum is for you. Depending on the level of your interest you might not want to explore the entire museum, but all its wonders are there for you to choose from.Visited January 2020Written July 12, 2020
- SandyUnited Kingdom3 contributionsMust go if you love maritimeBe prepared for an overload of information of maritime related subjects, ranging from history to paintings, sailor uniforms to miniature ships figures, the list just goes on, This is definitely a museum for people who are fascinated by ships of all sorts, from the medieval ships to battle warships to civil modern day cruise and cargo ships. Considering the admission fee is €15, I think it is worth it if you are a huge fan of ships. If not, you will find it boring and repetitive. I would say overall the ship collection is very impressive and aviators massive. One word of caution is that there is quite a number of exhibits that only have German descriptions, I found myself getting bored as a go along since I am not receiving any information about the exhibits in English.Visited March 2023Traveled soloWritten March 16, 2023

We visited all nine floors, and stayed for about 3 hours. The ticket allows visitors to leave and re-enter. It is an extensive museum that presents the history of life on sea, exploration of the sea and has models of every type of major battle, ship/ocean-going craft, and a wonderful collection of art. This was our first visit to Hamburg's maritime museum. It had 9-floors of maritime stuff, from paintings to models to weapons to uniforms to history to a container ship simulator. It was very well done. Highly recommend it, especially in a rainy day.

We tried to fit in as much of Hamburg as possible and this was the best museum of the lot.
9 floors of amazing exhibits that bring the maritime history of Hamburg and the world to life. This is a truly amazing place.

Firstly 7 floors are just a bit too many, if you don’t want to spend the whole day there, you don’t know where to start and what to skip. Secondly things could just be done in a much more interactive and interesting way, especially since it’s fairly new. Like this it’s just another museum - wouldn’t recommend. Additionally the front desk staff was extremely unfriendly :(
