Stunning German Train station - with cast iron roof

Travelling through Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (train station), it turned out to be a highlight of my brief visit to Hamburg.
Stunning German Train station - with cast iron roof - a relic of better design days.
Fairly easy to find your way around.
Lots of shops / cafes, left luggage.
Helpful ticket office who are fluent in English - thank you.
Nice first class lounge.
Very busy even on a Sunday.

This is another huge train station in Germany. There are a lot of platforms and so many people.
It was kinda hard to navigate our way around and there wasn't to many places to ask for any kind of help.
There are so many shops and places to grab food like other stations. Everything is open quite late also.

Don't buy SIM card at Hamburg hbf

Buying SIM card from Hamburg airport may be more expensive (they charge a fee >€10 to settle the line and register for you). Once you alight at Hamburg hbf station, walk out of it and head towards the shopping arcade. There is a O2 store, go there and purchase your prepaid SIM card. The staff are friendly and would gladly help to register it for you. Simple and only €9.99.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BUY IT FROM THE HBF'S ROSSMANN (LOCATED AT L2). Only purchase it if you can understand German, cos you'll still have to register the SIM at the nearest post office or via an online app-- not worth the trouble for a SIM!!

Excellent Station

Hamburg Hauptbahnhof is a fairly conventional German design, especially one in a large city. There's several departure boards around the station and the platforms are all easy to find. The platforms are on a lower levels accessible by stairs and the shops are arrayed on an upper levels on either ends of the building. There's no shortage of shops, restaurants and cafes. I even ate dinner and lunch here a few times.

Large, but easily accessible station in Hamburg, staff are very friendly, and also very amenable to helping those with disabilities.

Got excellent help of the DB staff when we missed a train connection due to delays in traffic. It's never fun to get delayed by several hours, but at least there is staff here that helps out.

As a good traveller, I love railway stations and we made a point visiting this one, even in fact, we stayed just around the corner from it. It is fascinating to watch the German clock-like precision and order at work, streamlining the visual and sound chaos of train departures and arrivals, shoppers milling about, passersby and the loud speaker announcements.

Convenient shop-and-go place

The building is a gem of the city. The transport facilities are convenient for passengers. There are many shops, including those with souvenirs, and a food court to have a bite before you leave.

This is some train station

We arrived from the airport, and had to catch a train down to Hanover. The place is vast, and the range of shops and food outlets put some airports to shame..And busy... wow.. The whole place was tastefully decorated also. Found our way to the information office, and we had to take a ticket and wait for our turn. Well that took 30 mins, it was so busy. Very helpful man on the desk, spoke great English, got us the best prices for a return trip... Still had an hour to wait, so had a good look around, and a bite to eat.

German trains now run predictably late.Staff incredibly rude, and boorish. Like British Rail in the 1970s, but without the tea. Avoid.
