The Picture Gallery of Sanssouci is located in a building next to the Palace. The structure itself seems simple and a bit dull from the outside, but inside it is beautiful. It was custom built to the purpose of presenting the King’s huge collection in the best possible way.

A very good electronic guide is available in English, making it possible to have general information about the building itself and specific information about the pictures of your choice.

An enormous building housing a fantastic collection of art. Mercifully empty after the overcrowded main house

Well worth the extra few minutes during the visit to Sans Souci to stroll through this incredible picture gallery, comprising mostly the collection of Frederick the Great, amazing to think he had this constructed for his personal viewing. No audio guide but there is a laminated card highlighting the paintings

The spacious and ornate interior is really impressive. We're not experts in the arts, but you get a guide to the paintings and I must admit there are some big names like Rubens or Caravaggio and interesting paintings to get a look at. If you have some spare time before the fixed hour for visiting the Sanssouci palace, this is the place to go.

Beautiful rococo+ interior. The large collection contains only a handful of genuine masterpieces. The vast majority are derivative (from the school of, the pupils of) etc. It shows that even emperors can be fooled into buying fakes. The audio guide is useful for describing the building. There is a photo card guide which identifies the original masterpieces, and time is better spent on them.

I would like to be able to rate this higher, but a couple of things lead me to give this a lower rating.

The Bildergalerie mainly consists of one wall of paintings with a side gallery containing a few more paintings. When you visit you are given a laminated card with some information on what all of the paintings are and you can optionally take an audio guide with more information on some of the works.

We started off with the audio guide which begins with a history of the building and why the paintings are hung the way there are (on the north wall, so there is a lot of glare and you have to stand to one side to see the details) and then has about 20 further descriptions.

The photo for the site does justice to what it is - a big long hall. Whilst I am no art buff, other galleries I have been in have had seats to sit on whilst looking at the paintings - there are none in the Bildergalerie. We gave up on the audio guides when we realised that it, at 2-3 minutes of description per picture, it would take about an hour to get round. The thought of that, after having walked from the Neues Palais and shuffled round the Sanssouci Palace, did not appeal.

Just having some seats would raise this from average to very good.

When visiting, I would advise either taking the information sheet but not the audio guide, or being prepared for a lot of standing about.

We came here after being unable to get tickets to Sanssouci palace as it was just next door and it was a nice alternative. It's one long room with a ton of paintings. We got the headphones and were able to take our time looking at all the art. You can get through everything in about an hour or more if you really take your time but no more is really needed in my opinion.

Worth the €6 admission for Caravaggio's "Doubting Thomas" alone. It's not hung particularly well, the light shinning on it is a mistake but it's still one of his best. The craftsmanship of the baroque ceiling is worth a look as well. Surprisingly not too crowded on a Saturday compared to the other palaces.

Baroque pavilion was built between 1755 and 1764, and I believe is the oldest purpose built museum building in Germany.
This building was the highlight of our trip to Germany, so well planned, with wonderful art works and sculptures. Painting by Caravaggio. Architectural pleasing to the eye is the interior of the building.
