680 "Red Army" soldiers and officers were buried in 291 individual and 18 mass graves. They fell in the last days of the War in the struggle for Potsdam.

It was very quite when we visited.
It has a very Russian look to the grave stones
The whole area was kept very clean and well tendered.
Situated behind the church of St Pauls
Could do with some imformation telling you the history of the area.

This Soviet War Memorial is located in an area known as Bassinplatz. The memorial is also the final resting place for more than 350 Russian soldiers who died liberating Potsdam and the surrounding area.
Ar the centre of the Memorial is a tall obelisk flanked on all sides by the grave sites, each with a tombstone, honouring and remembering their sacrifices. The obelisk has 4 attached soldier statues; each different and representing the Russian armed forces.
It’s a nice memorial that you can spend a few minutes or 15 minutes (if not more) depending on your level of interest. Your mileage will vary! I would rate my level of interest as 3+ out of 5 – above average. From a historical aspect it should probably be rated higher.
Notes and Tips
• We were here in September. The Memorial site was well maintained.
• Nearby attractions in the surrounding area:
1) St. Peter and Paul Church next to the War Memorial. The church was built in 1870.
2) Brandenburger Strasse pedestrian mall is across the street from the church with lots of retail outlets and restaurants. The pedestrian mall is about 1 kilometer (.62 miles) in length with the Church at one end and Brandenburg Gate at the other end of the pedestrian mall.
3) Sansoucci Park including the summer palace built in the mid 18th century for Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. Sansoucci Park is less than 2 kilometers away
4) Dutch Quarters (Holländisches Viertel) is less than 400 meters from the Church
5) Nauener Tor (Gate) is also less than 400 meters away in the direction of the Dutch Quarters
6) Potsdam’s Brandenburg Gate about a 1 kilometer walk from the church at the far end of Brandenburger Strasse.
• We had lunch at the Cafe Alice (operations include a pension - boarding house/hotel) on the pedestrian mall. Cafe Alice accepts cash only. See my restaurant review.

The memorial is located in the center of Potsdam, right behind St. Peter & Paul Church. There are 384 soldiers and officers of the Soviet Army buried there.
Many graves are of unknown soldiers. Some are mass graves. I noticed a lot of death dates from 1946. [Which are imagine for the soldiers who died after the end of the war].
The site is enclosed with the fence, so I could not approach closer. (Perhaps it is not a bad idea, given the trend of fascist rehabilitation that has swept the so-called democratic world).
Anyway, one should pay there respects when visiting these sites, to the people who sacrifice their lives fighting the fascist menace.

A quiet area of reflection, many of the graves were dated in 1946 so it seems many died after the end of the war, perhaps from their injuries.
