If you cross the Glienicke Bridge to the former West Berlin side, you will find an exclave of Potsdam, the former East Germany. It is marked on a bus stop-like sign. Of course, the wall has now been removed, but there are many photos from that time on display.

And the main and only reason for my visit to Potsdam was to visit Steinstucken, whose existence I first learned about in the "Mother and Child Series - Berlin Without the Wall" exhibition. This is an exclave of the former West Berlin in Potsdam. It is about 1 km from West Berlin, has an area of 13 hectares, and has a population of 150. At first, residents had to pass through East German territory to get to West Berlin, and even their children's school bags were searched. The situation improved when the Allied Powers reached an agreement on Berlin in 1972, and a road was opened from here to West Berlin, but a wall was built on both sides of the road. The wall was a ridiculous and strange thing.

It was supposed to be near Gribnitzsee, two stops closer to Berlin, and the information at Potsdam station said there should have been a museum there. However, when I asked people on site, they all gave me different answers. Although there was a bus stop with the same name, I couldn't find any explanatory boards or photos in the area like the former.
Someone please take revenge! On the way back, I stopped by the Wannsee Congress Memorial, but for some reason it was closed that day. It was a terrible day.
For the part about Steinstucken, I used Matsuura Takahisa's website as a reference. To see the travelogue from that time, search for "Sand Cloth - Remnants of the Wall and the East German Museum."

If you chose the time when cars are not driving the bridge: at night or in the morning - you will feel the history of the place and maybe even emotions. Today just a bridge, once upon a time a dark link between the east and the west. Be sure to watch Bridge of Spies (2015) first. And give yourself some time on the bridge. Take your time, and you may feel the vibrations of history.

Easy to get to from Potsdam main train station using the tram which was every 10 minutes. A lovely view from the bridge and it looked like you could get a ferry from there. Nearby Glienicker Villa is worth a look too.

There is not much to see so do read up before you come. You need to propel yourself back in time when this was the spy exchange, and let your mind do some imagining. The spot is beautiful. We took a tram here. I don't know anything about the river ferries but they run past here. I wish we had read up on the options to get here; the ferry seems idyllic.

We visited the Bridge from a boat trip. Although it's just a bridge the history that surrounds it makes it a must visit place. The boat trip meant we could see lots of things in a short 90 minute trip

Well worth a visit, short interesting walk from Posdam . It’s remind you of a divided nation now together and so strong. But we must never forget the hardship the East Germans endured for too long.

Well worth the effort to get there. We took the S Bahn to Potsdam. Outside the station are trams. I think it was no92 (or 93) marked Glienicke bridge. Short walk from the last stop. It's is a very impressive bridge. The views are lovely as well, but it was t he spy exchange history that made us visit. Not a bad little cafe in the building by the park entrance. Going back the tram stop much nearer the bridge

During the so called Cold War between The West and Russia, this bridge featured as the crossing point between the two major factions, with detainees being transferred across the central point of the Bridge. Many will have seen the various commercial films starring Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance and others where the site appears. Interestingly, the split on the bridge itself is highlighted by the two different shades of paint clearly seen in the more distant photograph attached. Not necessarily a must do, but interesting nonetheless.

The current Glienicke Bridge is the fourth on this site across the River Havel and was built in1907 with major reconstruction after damage in WWII. The river served as the border between West Berlin and East Germany during the Cold War and in 1952 the bridge was closed to West Germans by the GDR(government of EastGermany) and after the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 also closed to East Germans. There were several exchanges of spies at the bridge during the Cold War, the most famous being the exchange on February 10,1962 of the American U2 pilot Gary Powers for Russian agentRudolf Abel dramatized in the Spielberg film Bridge of Spies.
One day after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Bridge was open for pedestrians. For those of us that grew up during the Cold War, visiting this bridge evoked powerful memories of the tensions and fears that marked that era, an atmosphere we certainly do not want to recreate in our world.

We took the 93 tram here. It stops short of it ( out of sight). You have to alight and follow the tramline back and then turn right. There is no tourist display in English, only in German, so check the history before you go if you want to see certain things on the bridge.
We walked to the bridge, walked over and back and then headed back to tram stop which is a different one to the one you got off. ( its in the centre of the road and is the end of the line)
I think there is a cafe alongside the river to the left of the bridge but it was too cold for us to walk too incase it was closed. I guess the bridge is worth seeing.
Tram takes 15 mins from Postdam central and 10 mins return. You have 25 mins between being dropped off and next tram in the middle of the day so allow an hour to see this.
