About

The museum is a beautiful building in a beautiful place, I really liked the (special) exhibition Modigliani. Unfortunately, the guards are unbearable - both professionally and socially incompetent. Please check guests for unwanted items before entering the exhibition rooms so that the guest can drop them off at the cloakroom if necessary (also clear indications already in the cloakroom or check there) would be helpful. Please do not speak to guests unreasonably loud and harsh in the exhibition. This is not only enervating for the person addressed, it also disturbs everyone else's enjoyment of art. This behaviour should be stopped immediately by the museum management with its employees, it is simply shameful and, apart from the lack of social knowledge of standards, actually an organisational problem. If everything around the enjoyment of art becomes a burden, the next time the visitor thinks twice whether he will actually come back; that should not be in anyone's interest...

The Barberini Museum is housed in the Barberini Palace, which gives the museum its name, in the center of Potsdam. The collection of the museum's founder Hasso Plattner, which consists mainly of Impressionist works, is on permanent display here. Works by Monet, Renoir and Pissarro, to name a few, are on display. This exhibition alone is worth a visit. There are also changing special exhibitions. I saw the great exhibition with works by Munch, very worthwhile! The entrance is very well organized, as you have to book specific time slots, so there is no overcrowding or crowding. The staff were also very helpful and friendly throughout. A museum that really deserves a visit!

We arrived from Hamburg with an overnight stay and were not disappointed. We booked a time slot from 11:00 a.m. within the week and were able to enter the museum without waiting. There is a cloakroom, cupboards for bags and a beautiful museum shop. We really enjoyed the Munch exhibition. The pictures hang in large rooms and the viewers have enough space. We also really enjoy taking photos and were able to get along well with everyone. The explanations in the rooms, in the pictures and via the app were good and sufficient. We then went to the permanent exhibition of the “Hasso Plattner Collection”. We really enjoyed the visit and would come again.

The Museum Barberini in Potsdam is really great. Especially if you like art! They have many impressive works there, especially by the Impressionists like Claude Monet. The building itself is modern and chic, but still fits well into the historic surroundings of Potsdam. The temporary exhibitions are always interesting and bring variety. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to visit, which is just enough time to look at everything in peace.

I looked at the current exhibition "Maurice de Vlaminck - Rebel of Modernity". The artist was not a household name to me before, and so I had no particularly high expectations. However, the exhibition is really quite outstanding and highly recommended. Unfortunately, it will only run until January 12, 2025. I was really excited!

We have visited art galleries all around the world and couldn't understand why this particular exhibition left us with impressionism fatigue. Each room displayed impressionist art with a specific theme...light and shadow, gardens, seascapes, for example...but we found that there was little variety within the scope of each theme. Maybe there were just too many works on show to spend the necessary time one wanted to on any particular painting. We agree with other reviewers that the security there was rather 'aggressively' enforced and also agree that 16 Euros (midweek, 18 at weekends) is a rather expensive entrance fee; however, we are from Spain and are used to our museums generally offering free entrance. The building from the outside is certainly impressive and their café, on the Pavilion, however, was delightful and the staff extremely pleasant.

There are many museums that require you to leave your bag in the locker. However, I had never come across one that makes you leave your jacket there too. Baffled by this rule, I made it past the first warden only to be hunted down with Stasi-like aggression by his colleagues. Apparently, last year Green thugs hid cooked potatoes under their coats, which they smeared onto the paintings in some sort of climate protest. Ever since then you're only allowed one layer of clothing. The people who fret about global warming make you freeze. The irony seems lost on them. When you shiver for the better part of an hour in a well-airconned museum the artistic merit of the paintings doesn't really come into it. In future, if I feel the urge to freeze I use the walk-in fridge of my local liquor store and save 16 Euros.

Great exhibitions and a very, very beautiful museum. We love being there. But our visit on February 24th was not so great. Despite having timed tickets, the Munch exhibition was too crowded. Even when locking up our bags, we had to queue to get an empty locker. Some of the rooms are too small for the size of the paintings and the number of people, so many paintings could not be viewed at a sufficient distance. No painting could be viewed without being disturbed (someone standing in front of us). The app tour is actually a good idea, but because many people listened to it without headphones, the speakers could be heard everywhere, and smartphones often rang in the exhibition.

Very beautiful building and a very beautiful collection of paintings by various impressionists. Unfortunately, both the cloakroom and the exhibition rooms were very crowded. It would certainly be a good idea to limit the number of tickets so that you can enjoy the exhibition. Due to the large number of people, it was sometimes very loud with visitors talking, so that the atmosphere was not appropriate for a museum visit. Unfortunately, the exhibition rooms are a bit small, so you cannot look at the paintings from a sufficient distance to appreciate the spatial effect of the paintings. Overall, a beautiful but somewhat marred experience.

The museum is located in Potsdam’s historic center in a beautifully reconstructed building. It is easy to reach by public transportation and also paid parking is available nearby.

The museum was initiated by Hasso Plattner, who also founded the software company SAP. His personal collection is an important part of the museum’s permanent collection and includes several Impressionist paintings by artists such as Monet and Renoir.

When we visited in August a special exhibition with works of Dutch impressionists was on show. It is a large museum with much to see and it is possible to spend several hours here. Also there is a large shop and a nice café.

The Barberini is currently outdoing itself again with the Munch exhibition in its own building. Absolutely worth seeing, especially the mini auditorium room. Most of the paintings come from the Munch Museum in Oslo. Surprisingly, there were only a few visitors in the museum on Saturday morning.
It's just a shame that many well-known impressionists are missing from the permanent exhibition because they are currently on loan and have been replaced by black and white copies. There are certainly plenty of other paintings that could be shown instead.

The museum is a highlight! The permanent exhibition of the Impressionists is already an outstanding collection and now the Munch special exhibition is something very special. The color scheme of the rooms, detailed labels, matching frames, good seating and friendly staff, an all-round successful visit! By the way... the museum's Instagram page is also very informative...

I have rarely been to such a beautiful museum. It is impossible to list all the artists such as Monet, Pissaro, Signac, etc. So before you visit, think about what you really want to see and take breaks. The museum was overall good, from the friendly staff and the clean toilets to the shop and cafe. Last but not least, it should be remembered that Hasso Plattner made his private collection accessible to the public and provided a great setting for the presentation. Chapeau.

Beautiful exhibition, but the organization is completely incomprehensible.
Why do you have to book a time slot if you still have to look at pictures in the 5th and 6th row? Completely overcrowded with cell phone nerds constantly taking photos.
It's a real shame, but that was my last visit.

Unless you are especially interested in an exhibition at this museum specifically or have nothing else to do with your time, I wouldn't spend the surprisingly high price of admission or a few hours of time to walk through this museum. The different museums in Berlin, which are less than an hour train ride away, have a lot more variety and depth of content. If you're a tourist with limited time in Potsdam, I'd spend more time walking around outside than indoors in this museum.
