Neighborhood: Friedrichshain
When you arrive at Warschauer Strasse in the heart of the district, you have found one of Berlin’s party hotspots. At night in Friedrichshain, the energy is palpable and the streets of this old worker's quarter are full of street musicians. On one hand, you may find a bar with international crowds, electronic music, long lines and panoramic views - on the other, an outside venue by old train yards featuring decrepit buildings and live alternative music. No matter your taste, the best way to end a night out in Friedrichshain is sitting by the Spree River at the East side gallery, the longest and best preserved piece of the Berlin Wall, watching the sun rise over the beautiful Oberbaum Bridge.

I’m not sure this is the right place to make a review of the RAW Gelände area - but go, go, go.

It’s a super cool area in the end of Simon Dach Strasse with lots of cultural acitivities (theater, cinema, bouldering, skating, eating, drinking) and lots of picturesque graffiti.

Very scenic, very urban, very Berlin.

Even though I hate that label. There was a medieval themed Christmas Market that was the initial purpose of my visit, so this was a terrific surprise. Lots of graffiti and converted buildings-stuff right up my alley. There was a converted bath house for the train workers (!), the world's smallest disco, the world's smallest record shop and a bathroom that must be seen to be believed.

This place is probably packed in the spring and summer.

In Fredrichshain, a hip part of town, showcasing local artists' work with a shop and bar to boot. Not the cheapest, but if you are from an expensive city anyway (*cough* London *cough*) it's cheap in comparison. Good selection of drinks, and the staff are really friendly. Shade and plenty of space, located near lots of food, the world's smallest disco, and the Spree. A must-see, and the perfect spot to crash after a long day of exploring!

Many great graffiti, some pubs and clubs. Galleries - one was too crowded and they did not want to let us in, then it turned out it costs 20eur so we gave up. The other was closed because musical video was shot there. There is a skate arena and climbing wall, and pizza place. Good vibrant place but not great for families in the evening as we were warned by Berliners.

The art is amazing- I don't know of anywhere else you can find this much street art in one place. The vibe is super chill, the music great.
I take people's point about it feeling gritty but that's kind of the point. I stayed until nearly sundown and wandered the area; never felt threatened. Heard some great bars getting started for the night- really wanted to stay! I bet the vibe at night is wicked!

This review is for the whole of Urban Spree as there is far more than just a gallery. The gallery is near the road and when we visited there was an interesting exhibition. We were there at lunchtime but as we left they were obliviously setting up a music event so you might want to check the time to visit... later might be better. Behind this building there are other bars and spaces which you can wander through. We sat on deck chairs in the sun with a beer. Next time we would go in the afternoon or evening as I think more would be open. However we really enjoyed our visit and many groups and families were enjoying it too.

Great area to get the most of the Berlin street art atmosphere. Fantastic exhibition on at the moment by Futura 2000. Definitely worth a visit. Also its free entry so you have no excuse.

This really was a nice surprise. After seeing the bit disappointing east side gallery this was a real pleasant place to see.

There was a great vibe on the terrain and it was nice to relax for a little while and enjoy some drinks and music.

The art is also great but you can see it all in a short time.

Urban Spree - the whole complex - is a large, former industrial space that's been turned into a (mostly) outdoor street art/beer garden/live music/food and exhibition space - think concrete, shipping crates, wooden pallet furniture and loads of graffiti. As well as the pretty cool gallery on site, there's food, drinks, wall climbing, skating, clubbing and concerts, all there to promote everything you can consider to be urban culture.

The gallery's exhibitions are very cool and its well worth a look, but the whole place is like a giant outdoor exhibition so even just walking you'll see plenty of cool art all over the walls.

There's a couple of these kinds of places around Berlin, but I found this one the most chilled out and friendly. And even though this may sound like it's geared to the younger generation, I saw people of all ages and walks of life there enjoying the beer gardens, the sun, the food and a chat with their friends. The reason I haven't given it five stars is because of the super slow, super inefficient drink ordering system that can get pretty annoying once the place starts to fill up. Service is surprisingly slow to begin with (perhaps the chilled vibe of the place extends to service times) but on top of that all drinks are served in glasses that you have to pay one euro deposit for. Once you're done, there's no separate area to just drop off your glasses and get your deposit back, so you often have to join a very long, slow queue with all the other people wanting more drinks.

But that aside - if it's a nice day, I think Urban Spree is the perfect place to come and hang for a few hours, see some art, people watch and recharge.
