The square was created in about 1735 and was used under King Frederick William I as parade-ground, a sandy field then known as "Exerzierplatz vor dem Brandenburger Tor". In 1844 the Kroll Opera House was built on its west end, and in 1867 it was turned into a city square named "Königsplatz".
In 1873 the Victory Column was erected in the center of the square, at the end of the newly created Siegesallee boulevard. At the east end of the square stood the Palais of the Polish-Prussian count Atanazy Raczyński, before the Reichstag building was built there from 1884 to 1894.
During the Weimar Republic, the square was named "Platz der Republik" to commemorate the abolition of the monarchy. When the Nazis took power in 1933, the square was renamed "Königsplatz". As part of a grandiose plan to create a "Welthauptstadt Germania", the Victory Column was enlarged and moved to its present location in 1939. World War II ended in 1945 and in 1948 the square returned to the name "Platz der Republik". The Kroll Opera, severely damaged in the war, was finally demolished in 1951.
The Berlin Wall ran past the back side of the Reichstag. The square, now a large lawn, was thus far away from traffic and was used as a recreational area for weekend barbecues etc. After German reunification in 1990 the square regained its position of central importance in Berlin. A large German flag was raised on the square in the night from 2 to 3 October 1990.
In 1991 the German Bundestag decided that Berlin would again be the seat of government and parliament. The renovation of the Reichstag building was completed in 1999.

The Republic square is a huge rectangular lawn set in the middle of the Bundestag complex. The main edifice of that complex is certainly the Reichstag building, and best pics of it are made from here, specially in the afternoon when the sun's behind you. Beside it, you'll find the German modern Chancellery on the opposite side, and the huge Tiergarten park to the south.

On Tuesday 6 Sept 2018 ,from Brandenburg Gate , we took a 6 mins stroll to arrive at Berlin Parliament Building so called Reichstag Building. At the front there is a Information counter. We were informed that we need to book a time online if we like to take the View from the Dome. It is unfortunate that it has reached its full capacity and would not be able to take in any more visitors until Saturday. As we are leaving Berlin on Saturday morning, we have to give it a miss .
Nevertheless we spend some time at The Platz der Republik ,an open park infront the magnificient Reichstag Building. The Reichstag building is a stately building with very high roof supported by impressive Doric or Corinthian sandstone columns. The façade is of symmetrical framing. The park is vast , great place to rest our legs while watching many activities infront of our eyes. Great photo opportunities from this field on the Reichstag Building. Some of Berlin's most important buildings are situated here. Not to be missed.

It is a disgrace that the wide open area in front of parliament and the Reichstag is just a huge empty space. Maybe it is intended to be so for unknown reason. But for a prosperous, history rich country such as Germany, surely they can make a bit more of this area.

Location: In front of Reichstag.
Huge grassy square decorated with few hedges and trees. The absence of statues make plaza der republik a below average plaza.
Created to be a parade-ground, it was named "Platz der Republik" to commemorate the abolition of the monarchy.
The Victory Column was erected in the center of this square before being moved to its current place.

The building is amazing but the environment is a little sterile. There are lots of site around this. Good place to take a walk or just relax.

Just a big old grassy lawn with a square in front of the Reichstag building. Nothing special, but does offer a nice photo opp of the lawn and Reichstag from the edge of the Tiergarten at the Heinrich von Gagernstraße.

This is a large green space in the center of Berlin. It dates back to the 18th century and was originally used by King Frederick William I as a parade ground. At that time it was Exerzierplatz. The most prominent feature is the Reichstag building located on the east end of the platz. At the west end is the Kroll Opera House. It has being renamed several time. Under the Nazis it was called Konigsplatz. It has under gone several changes as well. There are several other attraction either adjacent or near by.
