The area
Neighborhood: Neukölln
No Berlin neighborhood is more popular with the young and jet-set crowd than the old worker's district of Neukölln. With so many Turkish settled here, the area became known as "Little Istanbul." Today the percentage of foreigners is still high and visitors still frequent the Turkish shisha bars. In the daytime, they also visit the designer shops and sit by the canal in one of the street cafés up and down Westerstrasse or at Maybachufer, having a beer and waving to the sightseeing boats as they float by. But at night, Neukölln is dominated by increasingly young, alternative, and international crowds. This is particularly evident in the northern section of the district where there are many bars, funky clubs, galleries and restaurants. There, the night never seems to end.

Georg Elser was a Communist Party member, who worked painstakingly to make a bomb that could kill Hitler. In the event, Hitler (who was habitually late) arrived early to deliver a speech, so Elser's bomb in the podium from where he spoke, blew up harmlessly about 30 minutes after Hitler had already left. Elser was hunted down and caught by the Gestapo: he had nearly made it to Switzerland and safety. Instead he died in a camp. This simple but effective memorial (he was held in a Gestapo prison which used to be nearby) is illuminated at night and is 5-6 metres high. There's an information plaque nearby.

We came across this sculpture walking between the Holocaust Memorial and Checkpoint Charlie and didn't really know the significance until I did a bit of quick research when we got back. Johan Georg Elser attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler and other high ranking Nazis in 1939 and if he had been successful how different things might have been. Instead he failed, was jailed for five years before finally being executed. His attempt was in Munich. This statue is lit up at night but alas we were heading elsewhere so only saw it for a brief minute. If only he had been successful.

Pretty, abstract sculpture, paying tribute to Johann Elser, artisan, musician and would-be assassin of Hitler. Just read his bio on Wikipedia, intriguing life story.

I enjoyed walking down Wilhelmstrasse and seeing the sculpture lit up at night. An interesting one for sure.

A recent addition.
A very simple but moving monument to Johann Georg Elser who very nearly wiped out the whole of Hitler's command with a bomb attempt in 1939. The monument is based on Johann's profile.
At night the monument is lit up. Well worth a quick detour to see it if you are in the area.
