This monument stands in tribute to Friedrich Schiller, the great German poet and writer, who along with Shakespeare and Cervantes is considered amongst the greatest ofEuropean authors.

This monument stands beautifully in the centre of Gendermarkt surrounded by equally beautiful buildings of the Opera House, French Cathedral and German Church. The monument depicts Schiller as a young man, in romantic pose surrounded by allegorical figures of his writings, Lyric Poetry, Tragedy, History and Philosophy.

Friedrich Schiller Statue honors Gemany's most admired poet, philosopher and historian and one of the most significant dramatists and lyricists. He provides the lyrics to Beethoven's Ode to Joy, the European anthem.

The statue represents Schiller wearing a crown of laurel leaves, holding a scroll in his left hand and depicted as a young, self-assured man.
Below him sit four allegorical female figures depicting Schiller's main areas of creative activity:

1-Poetry with a swan-headed harp

2-Drama amd tragedy with the attribute if a mask

3- History with names including Schiller, Lessing, Kant, Goethe ...on her tablets

4-Philosophy holding a scroll with a text in Ancient Greek: ‘Know Thyself’.

Friedrich Schiller (1788–1805) was a German writer. Schiller and Goethe were the leading figures of Weimar Classicism, a cultural and literary movement.

Four women sit on the edges of the basins represent the writer’s main areas of creative activity. poetry, tragedy, history, and philosophy, .

The monument was executed by Reinhold Begas. He also designed the Neptunbrunnen (Fountain of Neptune) located at the square between the St Mary's Church and the Rotes Rathaus.

Look at the similar compositions of the two masterpieces: "the main character in the center, surrounded by four women".

This monument was located right across the street from our hotel. Beautiful set of statues outside the concert hall. Worth a visit and short walk.

Came through the Square at 7:30 PM, and the statues and impressive buildings were all dramatically lit. The square was almost empty so it created quite a scene

The Schiller Monument is a wonderful set of statues located in arguably the most beautiful square in Berlin namely Gendarmenmarkt.
The monument is in honour of Friedrich Schiller ,a very famous poet, philosopher and historian.
Sculpured in the 19th century by the renowned artist Reinhold Begas, the statues are well detailed and really photogenic.
During WW2 this monument was removed as Gendarmenmarkt was converted into a parade ground ,this probably explains why they are in such pristine condition.
They form part of Gendarmenmarkt which is an square packed with exquisite architecture including the French & German cathedrals and the magnificent Schinkels Konzerthaus.
Easy to locate by jumping the Ubahn down to stop Stadtmitte.
A great set of statues and well worth checking out.

Its a nice thing to quickly look at as you walk to/past the concert hall and playhouses. For people who like fountains of famous people then its one to add to the list....I wouldn't go too far out of the way though.

At the centre of one of the most beautiful historic squares of Berlin, the Gendarmenmarkt (designed by Georg Christian Unger in 1777), the statue of Friedrich Schiller, the famous German poet was originally created as a fountain but was dismantled in 1936 when Gendarmenmarkt became a military parade ground.

It is a fine sculpture and, without it, the square must have felt quite empty. Happily, it was reinstalled in its original position in 1988, but without the water fountain, which is a rather a pity.
