- Peter BCincinnati, Ohio432 contributionsA glimpse into the recent pastThis well-organized, compact museum may be more interesting for younger Germans looking to get an idea of how their grandparents and parents lived, but I found it interesting as an American as well. The recreation of the ideal socialist apartment reminded me of seeing models of homes in the US from the 50s, 60s and 70s. The exhibits are well-presented with lots of interactivity, and the descriptions are are quick to read. I'd include this spot with a tour of the German Espionage Museum, as well as a guided tour of the wall sights.Thank you very much for your visit and the good review!Written October 24, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 24, 2023
- Samantha L51 contributionsSmall fact filled museum.Enjoyable fact filled small museum about life in the DDR. Located not far from Alexander Platz, easily completed in 1.5 hrs. Fun room reconstructions from the 1970s. Different to the Stasi Museum and easier for children to engage with.Thank you very much for your visit and the good rating!Written November 4, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 4, 2023
- Suzanne D25 contributionsInteresting and interactive learning experience.Real interesting and loved the interactive. Learnt a lot about life in the DDR and wished I’d had long to look around. Didn’t manage to read everything, but that was mainly because I am learning German, so I tested myself by reading the German sections. Would definitely recommend a visit, it’s a nice spot down by the river, with a great view of the Berlin Dom as you come out the main doors.Thank you very much for your visit and the great review!Written December 3, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2023Traveled soloWritten December 1, 2023

Quite enjoyable and well worth a visit if you have time. - ShaneKent, United Kingdom93 contributionsInteresting, interactive and a little bit unusualThis museum provides a surprisingly interactive look at life on the other side of the wall. There’s plenty of interesting exhibits crammed in so it’s definitely worth spending a few hours here. I very much enjoyed the interactive nature of the museum, in particular the DDR - furnished apartment you could visit. - jktrockBaumholder, Germany1,431 contributionsSpectacular placeOutstanding museum. With that being said, if you don’t know what GDR/DDR/FRG mean, you might not enjoy the place to the fullest. I was born and raised in the Soviet Union, so, for me this museum was like a trip down the memory lane. Back to my childhood. So many objects that we owned, that we used in every day life, realities from back in the days. I absolutely enjoyed it. My American husband didn’t quite get the whole buzz. So, unless you lived through the Cold War period, you might not find this museum too interesting. It’s located right across Berlin Dome, so you can visit 2 locations in one setThank you very much for your visit and the lovely review! We are very pleased that you had such a great time in the museum. It is true that visitors who grew up in the GDR or other socialist countries particularly like to visit the DDR Museum to tell their friends and relatives about it or simply to connect with their past. However, the interest of West German and foreign visitors is at least as great. The DDR Museum is also very popular with schools, as the subject is part of the curriculum. Accordingly, demand is high and the museum is visited by a lot of people, especially at weekends and during school holidays.Written January 16, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 9, 2024
- helenandpaul13Worcester, United Kingdom1,685 contributionsGives an insight into life as an East German post WW2I visited here with my wife for the afternoon. It's situated next to the cathedral by Museum Island, just down a flight of stairs. Inside you get a real feel of what it was like to live as an East German under Russian control. Every part of your life was scrutinised and if you belonged to the party ups received lots of benefits. However, if you didn't belong you had to drive a Trabant or a Wartburg which took many years to deliver and didn't improve in over 30 years. Really interesting to find out what it was like to live as a German under Russian control and not knowing who was spying on who. The sad reality is that it's not surprising so may people tried to escape after the war.Thank you very much for your visit and for your fantastic rating, Helen and Paul!Written March 11, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 11, 2024
- markw20191Birmingham, United Kingdom45 contributionsExcellent interractive museum experience. Try and avoid at busy times if you can. This is likely one of many museums in Berlin focusing on the cold war. There is quite an emphasis here on what it was like to live through the period of history, as opposed to focus on the politics and personalities that led to the cold war and its impact on Berlin in particular. There is a 'model' of a german flat as it would have been during the 60s that you can walk around. Overall this was very good. There is an admission price of 14(?) euros which seemed reasonable to me by the time I had finished. There is a lot of information to get through. My one recommendation would be to try and visit when there are few visitors. The surface area covered by the museum isnt that big and if it is busy this can more difficult to get around easily.Thank you very much for your visit and for your positive rating!Written March 26, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 23, 2024
- June ASurrey, United Kingdom2,755 contributionsSmaller than I expected bit with tons of informationI always wanted to visit this Museum so it was the first places I went after I arrived. It was a lot smaller than I expected but nevertheless very informative and easy to follow. It basically follows the history of the formation and eventual collapse of the DDR with a lot of detail as to what life was like during those times. Having visited similar museums in other Eastern European countries not a lot of it came as a surprise. but each country is of course unique and has their own history and they all suffered equally. You can only begin to imagine the level of fear and suppression that they lived under, knowing that things could and should be different but feeling and indeed being powerless and too afraid to even try and change things. Its quite sobering really and a real eye opener.Thank you very much for your visit and for your great feedback!Written April 22, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2023Traveled soloWritten April 5, 2024

Taking the grandchildren (aged 14 & 11) and trying to understand the essence of 'cold war' years was a challenge that this DDR Museum helped to achieve. Must be selective with what you queue up to see (was exceptionally crowded) and need to plan carefully when to see the Trabant. Thoroughly entertaining.

We found the DDR Museum on a Wet Sunday in February completely unprepared for the crowds which flocked to it to escape the rain. The line was long and it was unclear that it was only for people without tickets. Once inside while well laid out, with interesting artefacts and interpretation we could hardly access for enjoy any of it because of the large number of people. There was hardly room for everyone let only to view the displays. The museum should seriously consider a cap on the amount of visitors at any one time.

Dear chathalds, you are right that many people want to see the DDR Museum so it can get busy at certain times – and even more so with additional rain-escapees ;) We are already trying to regulate the high numbers of visitors with ticket gates and we extended our opening hours from 9 am until 9 pm. In order to avoid many other people we recommend visiting in the evenings. PS: If you buy your ticket online you can skip the line!

I don't know if I would say it's a must, but it's definitely enjoyable. Very interactive, you cam touch everything. The display is really unique. Also liked the reconstructed apartment, where you can walk in and touch everything. But it's a small museum, I don't even imagine how crowded it can get. We visited in January on a Friday evening and it was not very crowded, it was a good experience. Still, we could not find a moment to try the trabant car, as it was always occupied.

Visited the DDR museum earlier today (morning / early March 2020)... Only a few people in there, so able to really take advantage of the displays. Very interesting and interactive account of life (and mindset) of those living behind the iron curtain in East Germany.
I personally spent about 2 hours in there, However it’s not that big, so I can imagine it being awfully cramped if it were to be busy. Arrive early and out of season if possible.

This small museum is all you need to get the real feel for what it was like in the former DDR. Their hands on displays and mixed media keeps the patrons of all ages engaged. I visited Slovakia right after Communism fell in 1993 and the apartments there were exactly how the apartment in this museum was set up - incredible! Go if you are ever in Berlin.

Having seen this museum on Channel 4’s Travel Man I had assumed that much of the interactivity was just for the show – how wrong was I.?
In the small museum you get to see what rooms in houses were like and can investigate their contents by opening the drawers and cupboards. It also gives you a history of the DDR from various perspectives including sporting and military.
As other reviewers have written it’s quite small and bustling with school parties when we were then but still worth considering visiting

Went during Feb half term and was very busy and hard to access the information as the museum is very small. Overpriced for what it is- perhaps aimed more at younger children who like an interactive experience. There are definitely better museums (for free) in Berlin!!

Hi there, the DDR Museum is indeed a very popular museum in Berlin and can get busy at certain times. We recently extended the opening hours from 9 am until 9 pm and recommend visiting in the evenings, especially if you would like to avoid many other people. With its interactive approach – that draws adults and children alike – the exhibition was nominated already twice with the European Museum of the Year Award. The place itself might seem small at first sight but the exhibition is packed with hands-on-history to discover. The price of 9,80 Euro (reduced 6 Euro) is only fair, not only compared to other museums but also considering the many unique installations and hundreds of objects, many of which you can grab/touch/use/play with... The average time spent inside is at least 1,5 hours. If you want to see all the interactive elements and read the information provided, you can spend several hours in the exhibition.

After reading some reviews had low expectations for this place but it was actually very good. It is very modern and interactive and finds lots of interesting ways to give you information. I was lucky it was fairly quiet when I was there so I had no bother seeing it all but I could see how it would get crowded at busy times so plan accordingly.
Spent a solid couple of hours here and could have been more. It is a gold mine of interesting things told in an engaging way

Located next to Deutsch Dorm, Museum Island, you may visit these places together. There are some precious daily collections of DDR daily life like motorbike, food cans, and interrogation room ...etc. They are rare in the modern world. It’s a small museum you can finish it within one hour.

Visited here as part of a weekend break in the hope that I would learn more about the Berlin cold war east/west split.
The museum is not as interactive as advertised, none the less does contain some insightful exhibits and interesting information about the cold war.
The most interesting part for me is the stage set of a flat designed to look like a flat from the 70/80's on the eastern side of the wall.
Cost to get in was 9.80 euro's which isn't bad for a museum but I left feeling slightly underwhelmed, perhaps due to the size of the museum which was not as big as I thought / anticipated.
