Our family has lived on the edge of Grunewald forest ever since we moved to Berlin more than 50 years ago. In summer we can swim in one of two nearby lakes surrounded by the forest. Joggers do their rounds on earthen paths circling the lakes. Bike riders spend hours in the solitude of the woods. In winter when there's snow X-country skiers traverse the huge forest.

but it probably helps to like the species since this is one of the few places in Berlin where the beasts can live like dogs. And they do frolic, bark, race and parade but also do their business one and two. Which means (1) you need to look where you are going and (2) it can be a little smelly in the summer months. That's that bad side: the good side is that you can be in something like a natural setting in the city -- and see where the Berlin painter Leistikow got some of his inspiration. There is also a nice restaurant and a cafe and, if you pay attention, a secret stash of Lucas Cranach paintings.

Grunewald Forest is one of Berlin's lesser known attractions. Easily accessible via the S Bahns, this massive green space is a must for nature lovers, dog walkers and anyone who wants a break from the city. As well as monuments to see such as the abandoned NATO site, there are opportunities for cycling and a number of lakes to visit. The one qualm I have is that the forest is so big, it is difficult to signpost. I got off at S Olympiastadion station and entered the forest from the north and found there were next to no signposts or directions. For explorers this will be a positive thing but for those who like to know where they are going, this can be quite annoying! Putting that aside, I highly recommend a visit to Grunewald Forest, which has something for everyone.

A nice woodland walk, if you have a dog. If you want a relaxing walk in the wood without a dog don't bother. For some strange reason bags and bags of dog poo are tied to the fences throughout the area......which is just disgusting. We only saw one other couple with no dog, presumably there by accident because they didn't know that this is a "hunde auslauf" area. If you do have a dog and want to meet all the other people in Berlin who also have a dog, it's the place for you.

A seemingly endless and peaceful forest with a great variety of plants and bird life. Take a bike or just walk. You will certainly enjoy it

Lovely location, with lakes and massive set of dunes for building monster sandcastles. Very popular with locals and expect plenty of nudists, especially round the lake area if the sun is shining. Good for mountain bikers and dog walkers too.

This was a real surprise: beaches on the edge of this lovely forest complete with islands and the occasional boat chugging in with cooldrinks and ice cream for those on the beach. 1st time I was there early July the water was crystal clear (saw a lobster - or is it a crayfish) and lots of fish, last time (end of the summer) the water was pretty murky and the water quality was suspect. The forest is very nice and houses many wild boar.

Walking through Grunewald Forest provides a balanced perspective of Berlin. Not only do we have world class museums, a crazy and unique night culture and of course so much history but also gorgeous lakes and forests.

Most visitors to Berlin will not be aware of the vast forested area of Grunewald in which you can enjoy tranquillity within a few minutes of the city. Get the S-Bahn to Heerstrasse , Wannsee or Grunewald stations for a break from city life. You'll also find huge lakes such as the Havel. Great for Autumn colours and woodland paths.

It was good to come here to get away from the hustle and bustle of Berlin, but it was not as good as I expected. The forest is full of dogs and their owners, The lake is full of dogs-great if you are a dog lover. If you want to go for a nice peaceful walk, Wannsee may be a better option but we did not go there.
