As you walk round the streets in this neighbourhood you'll notice lots of 'stumble stones', discreetly drawing attention to the deportation of many of its prewar Jewish residents. This memorial, 'the empty room', in the small park on Koppenplatz, is an unusual and imaginative way of commemorating the victims and is well worth stopping off for if you are here.

Come with time to:
Sit.
Consider.
Reflect, and analyse.
What does it say?
What does it mean?
To me ... what does it say?
What should I think?
What should I say.

A lovely place to sit and reflect in a quiet space near the busy Hackeshe Markt. The sculpture of the empty room is very simple and moving. This is a former Jewish area where plenty have departed willingly and unwillingly. There is information in English to read about the sculpture.
Do not miss this among the hurly-burly of Berlin.

This appealing memorial, called The Deserted Room (Der Verlassene Raum), in the former Jewish neighborhood of Berlin consists of a table and two chairs, of which one is fallen. It shows a room whose inhabitants suddenly are disappeared.

The memorial contains the following poem of Nelly Sachs:
...oh the houses of death / invitingly appointed / for the landlord of the house who was once a guest / Oh you fingers, / laying the threshold / like a knife between life and death / Oh, you chimney stacks, / Oh you fingers, / And the body of Israel going up in smoke!
(In German: ...O die Wohnungen des Todes, / Einladend hergerichtet / Für den Wirt des Hauses, der sonst Gast war- / O ihr Finger / die Eingangsschwelle legend / Wie ein Messer zwischen Leben und Tod - / O ihr Schornsteine, / O ihr Finger, / Und Israels Leib im Rauch durch die Luft!)
