Along the former wall in Berlin is on most places a cycle route. On of the nicest things to do is to cycle on the "Köningsweg" from Berlin (Zehlendorf) to Potsdam. It is a route through the forest, passing for instance the former borderplace Dreilinden. On the route orange poles mark the place where former DDR-inhabitants didn't succeed to cross the border to the western part. Cycling along the Teltow-kanal (canal) is also a must, it runs from Kleinmachnow to the former Tempelhof airport.

My wife and I lived in West Berlin for a few years in the 1980’s so the Berlin Wall was a part of our lives.
Last summer we spent two months back in this amazing city and took the opportunity to walk all 160km of the Mauerweg and it was fascinating.
We knew some of the sections in the city fairly well but the sections to the north, south and west of the city, especially out in the country were all very knew to us.
We walked the Mauerweg over 10 days, using the great public transport system to get us to our start point each day and back at the end.
As you walk along each section you get to read about the tragedies and sacrifices made by people attempting to escape. Along the way there are some lighter stories too.
We walked the route but most people seem to cycle it.
I would thoroughly recommend the Mauerweg to anybody who likes walking our is interested in modern history.

It’s important to remember what happened from 1961-1989 and the track of the wall helps...it shows how close two sides of a street were yet on different sides of the concrete separator that at 3.6m high doesn’t seem enough to keep people in their place but is a sign of a regime that made people understand the consequences were not worth the attempt.
Worth walking as much of it as you can from the East Side Gallery.

The area is split into two distinct features for me.
1. an example of how people woke up one morning to find that their homes were now either part of East Germany or even literally split in two between the east and west-and how this affected families.

2. The hostility of the walls that split east from west and the vastness of the no mans land that separated them.

once again, sober viewing, but well worth the reality check of what the world is capable of.

On our bikes we started around checkpoint Charlie for the north segment. There were good marks and bike friendly routes (even for our kids ok). At some places we were happy to have some GPS tracks map and routes at hand as it was not always clear. It was a pure pleasure to experience this separation line by biking along.

Walked the northern section from near Shildow to Nieder Neuendoft 17.4 miles. It's a bit remote but there's plenty of cyclists about and historical boards aplenty, it's a walk through history

I walked the divide between East and West berlin all 30 miles, very enjoyable walk highlighted by the regular information boards. Recommend you get the book BERLIN WALL TRAIL as that helped when i could find the MAUERWEG signs. Had no problems re safety but its a bit hairy on the path by Wolankstrasse !!!

The only place in Berlin where it is still possible to see how the wall was, easy to access, really interesting.
It also gives the opportunity to visit the near Nordbahnhof, one of the so called "ghost stations" where there is an exhaustive photographic exhibition about the subject

This tour shows you in a great way the history of a divided Germany and what the wall meant for the people in Berlin. Several stop with information in texts, pictures, videos and sound give you information about life from the day the wall was build to the fall of the wall in 1989. Everything both in German and English!

Sometimes it gives you goosebumps, when you see the pictures and histories of the people who died at the wall and just the fact that you are walking in the area that was the death stripe is a weird feeling.

I can recommend to take the tour. A lot of history there.

We started the wall walk at the East Side Gallery and followed it all the way to Checkpoint Charlie.
It's a long way but you really get to feel what it was like, how close some of the buildings were to the wall itself.
Sometimes the signs seem to disappear but just keep you eye open, they are there!
