- TravelfunBedfordBedford, United Kingdom378 contributionsBest Zoo I've ever been toWe visited Berlin Zoo especially to see the pandas. It is the best Zoo I have ever been to. The layout, setting and animal enclosures were excellent. Really well thought out. We were very impressed. It was wonderful to walk amongst the green vegetation, trees and gardens in between the enclosures. Everything looked fresh and well cared for and the enclosures were clean (when they were supposed to be!) All the animals we saw looked exceptionally healthy with variety in their enclosures. The enclosures enables lots of viewing areas. We went to the panda talk but unfortunately for us there was no English translation. The twin pandas were asleep but we had a good view of them. They were not feeding the pandas at the same time. We walked away and returned a bit later when the pandas had been fed. They were more active and fun to watch and most of the people had moved on by then! We got some good close up photographs. We saw 3 of them. A couple of areas were under construction so we couldn’t properly see the brown bears. However, there were loads of different species of animals and mostly a lot of each species so overall plenty to see. We had drinks and a hot meals in the main cafe /log cabin near the play area. We were both impressed with the quality of the meal and generosity of the portions. Overall we had a fantastic day out and thought it was great value for money. I highly recommend a day at the zoo during your time in Berlin. It was easy to get to on public transport.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 11, 2023
- Lissette RNorth Bergen, New Jersey215 contributionsAn amazing time!Came here during a 4 day stay in Berlin. This zoo had the most amazing children's park within its very own grounds. I was floored by the this more than anything. The zoo was filled with lots of animals with a very interesting and different approach to refrain the animals from comign to you and give you full access to view them. It was remarkable. I absoutely loved this approach. The monkey area was so much ful my daughter loved seeing the monekys swing around. Having pandas was an increible bonus! Thank you for the amazing memories here.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 14, 2023
- joyc150134 contributionsYou must visitThe animals seemed very happy and well cared for. There is an amazing selection of animals, we didn’t manage to get to see everything as it’s a lot of walking, but we did what was important to us. The monkey house was brilliant and it was thrilling to see pandas. The only negatives were that we felt the elephants didn’t have enough space or stimulation and I don’t like to see creatures being made to perform. We saw this with the sea lions and it’s something that doesn’t fit well with us both. Apart from this we loved our visit.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 16, 2023
- Ellies1999Derby, United Kingdom197 contributionsGreat day outA really good zoo, with so many animals to see. Really nice spacious enclosures and the animals seemed well cared for. Good value for money to get in and could spend a fair few hours there. Would definitely recommend when in Berlin!Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 19, 2023
- Sandy SAlbuquerque, New Mexico1,038 contributionsHistoric zoo with modern sensibilitiesConsidering that it was founded in the mid 19th Century, Berlin's zoo has done a good job of bringing its approach to displaying animals in line with modern science and sensibilities. Set on the edge of the Tiergarten, it is as much a garden as a zoo, with broad walks winding past fountains and overhung with deciduous trees sporting fall foliage. Some of the animals are in open habitats, separated from the public by moats and low walls. Others are housed in buildings with fanciful fin de siècle architecture evoking exotic lands. Opened in 1840 in what had been a royal pheasant-hunting ground, the zoo now exhibits 1380 different species. Pride of place – and the largest enclosure – goes to the zoo’s four giant pandas. The Panda Garden has its own visitors’ center, with descriptions (in German and English) of the bears’ natural habitat, and videos of the resident pandas, sometimes too shy to observe up close. Throughout the zoo, plaques posted beside the enclosures explain the animals’ range, diet, reproductive lives and the threats the species faces, often from loss of habitat due to human development and climate change. The paths winding through the grounds are broad and well-paved.Visited November 2023Traveled soloWritten November 4, 2023
- SamanthaAberdeen, United Kingdom325 contributionsAmazing zooThere are so many reviews saying how sad and depressing this zoo is and I fail to see this in so many ways. First of all, the zoo is massive and all the animals are spread throughout. They have enclosures outside and a smaller one inside to keep them warm in the colder months, like our visit. The enclosures all have plenty activity for the animals, to keep them active and content. The animals all seemed very happy and we did not witness any pacing back and forth, which I have seen in previous zoos. All the animals seemed well cared for, with ample food provided and there were lots of staff on sight caring for both animals and public. The zoo is so interesting, with lots of beautiful buildings alongside the amazing animals. I would highly recommend this zoo, we had a fantastic day out.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 2, 2023
- tinylassSheffield, United Kingdom5,820 contributionsClose up animalsThis was a very good zoo with some less common animals including pandas. You could see all the big cats up close through glass and there were some huge birds as well as more standard zoo animals. There were plenty of toilets scattered around and the food in the restaurant was delicious and a very good price.Thank you very much for your great review!Written December 27, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 8, 2023

- NoakesRyanBury, United Kingdom770 contributionsFirst time in my life I've seen Pandas.Fantastic. Amazing. Unbelievably Beautiful Animals. So happy that we decided to visit. One of the best Zoo's I've been to: mainly because of the variety of animals we saw and how well they seem to be looked after. They all had loads of space and looked happy. As for variety we saw Elephants, Giraffes and for the first time in my life Pandas. It only took us 2 hours, not including the Aquarium. We appreciate your great review. - ZooGirl101The Netherlands735 contributionsGreat zoo!I really enjoyed my visit to Zoo Berlin. A great city zoo that has a huge collection of animals and many of them living in suitable enclosures. I loved the big cat and primate houses, and also the antilope house. Great way to showcase the animals. The sea lion training session was great, awesome to see how they work together with the animals. Some areas of improvement would be the black rhino enclosure and big cat outdoor enclosure. But I can see this zoo is doing great things. Since recently they stopped with the polar bears, which I thought was a great choice.Thank you for your great review. We are glad you enjoyed your time at Zoo Berlin.Written January 5, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 5, 2024

We decided to visit the zoo for the pandas. We made a bee line for the pandas first which was a good thing because we only had to queue for 10 minutes and later the queue got a lot longer. The pandas are lovely but obviously because a lot of people want to see them you are kept moving so see them for a few seconds. The rest of the zoo was undergoing a lot of modernisation so a lot of the animals were missing (all the big cats and the kangaroos and everything over the bridge) the zoo will definitely be better for the enclosure upgrades because some of the animals did look a little sad. However the highlight for me was the hippos I’ve never seen a hippo in real life and the aquarium tank let’s them swim right next to you. Honestly watching them was the best part of my trip to Berlin (I’m not going to let me oh know that though because I kept banging on about the culture!)

Our hotel (SO/ Berlin Das Stue) overlooked part of the zoo so it was very convenient for a visit here. The animal enclosures are well spaced out to spend a good 2-3 hours wandering round. For a different perspective I would recommend a window seat with a few drinks at the Monkey bar (part of the 25hours hotel)

We went to Berlin Zoo for an afternoon day trip. The zoo was very quiet as we visited in january and quite a few of the enclosures were under construction so we didn't get to see the giraffes or lions which was a shame.
The zoo itself is huge and is very well landscaped and maintained by the people who work there. We bought entry to the aquarium which was one of my favourite places in the zoo. They have a huge selection of fish, amphibians and insects.
Well worth a visit!

While my title may seems as if I am an extreme vegan who would protest with extinction rebellion it may come as a surprise that I am in fact a farmer who is well used to the welfare and husbandry of animals.
I was in the zoo on a very warm day which would leave many people sunburnt following a day in the sun. The animals looked visibly distressed whether this was due to having little shade to hide in and the extreme heat or for other reasons.
The enclosures themselves seemed tiny compared to other zoos I have been to (Sydney, Dublin etc) for such huge animals and the zoo itself was quite difficult to navigate and was poorly laid out.
Strangely enough there was little barriers between people and the zoo and ones which the parade animals could easily escape into the crowds, can wild animals be tamed enough through ethical means (without drugs or abuse)?
The aquarium was only accessible by leaving the zoo and entering through another street side entrance which gives the appearance it is closed.
Purchase tickets in advance to skip the queue, people online tickets can go straight to the gate while those queueing for a ticket must form a line to the left along the wall

We got to the zoo late on the day and found that the animal enclosures would shut at 4.00pm. Most animals inside and we had to rush around to get to see them. Small zoo but worth a visit if only to see the Pandas.

We might have been here at the wrong time of the year as most animals was inside their houses and not outside in their enclosures.
Anyway a very nice Zoo with a lot to see. We are both interested in animals and photography and here we could get plenty of both.
We missed many animals as they were kept inside but even so, we strolled around for 5 hours here including the aquarium which is also well worth to visit.
Not only the animal lovers will like this place as it is at the same time a great park to walk around in. Some good restaurants are also to be found inside the Zoo.

Having been to a couple of zoos in Europe this one is particularly good.
Animals seem happy, areas are clean and there is lots to see!
Some construction work is ongoing to expand the enclosures so some parts are closed.
Still a good day trip

We visited this Zoo on a Saturday which is easy to get to by public transport. It was easy to access, and very reasonably priced. Its staff were all friendly. The animals had plenty of space and it was nice to see the efforts the zoo keepers dedicated to all the animals. The zoo itself was large, clean and really well designed and themed to the animals in that section. Worth a visit and one of the better Zoos I have visited.

We visited Berlin Zoo on our last day in Berlin before heading to the airport, we spent about 3 hours there and it was quieter than we expected for a Friday which was good. I can see where people are coming from with the comments about small enclosures, but the animals looked content. The giant panda exhibit was very impressive and there was plenty of shady benches for a rest from the sun. I would recommend a visit here especially for the price of 20euro pp, you can see why the zoo's in the UK are more expensive though as they have much more space.

Berlin Zoo is without a doubt the best zoo I've been to in terms of the number of different animals there, and the ability to see them all in their homes, or even behind the scenes. We'd been once before but it was still as great as the first time- the carnivores were having their habitats refurbished so we didn't get to see them, but it didn't particularly detract from the overall experience.
Favourites would probably have to be the orangutans who were chilling out in the primate house, and the super naughty goats in the petting zoo. We're grown adults but we probably spent the most time during out visit in there!
Visiting in the winter was good in terms of avoiding the crowds, but a lot of the food and drink places were closed, and the main zoo restaurant felt a bit barren, aside from that though we thoroughly enjoyed our day out and will definitely be back in the future!

Do you rent out scooters for people who cannot walk a long way?
Written October 26, 2023
According to the zoo's FAQ, there are wheelchairs for rent. They also allow many walking aids and bikes for kids under 5. I know from memory that there are plenty of benches, so if someone is using a walker they will be able to sit loads.

We visited them around 10am-11am on a weekday just prior to everyone flocking to the restaurant. Even so the enclosure is well visible if there are a few more people there.
