We learned of this site on our two hour walking tour. We would have not really understood if it’s purpose if we had not been on such a well detailed tour. If you go it alone, read up on the history and the meaning of the monuments along with the grounds which are unmarked mass gravesite within the park.

This monument in Tiergarten stands in tribute to the Soviet soldiers who died fighting the Nazis in the Second World War. Like many Soviet war memorials behind the Iron Curtain, the memorial takes the form of a curved stoa topped by a large sculpture of a Soviet soldier. On the day I visited, there was a climate change protest and entry into the memorial was unfortunately fenced off. So I could just see that the memorial is set in landscaped gardens and flanked by two T34 tanks and two artillery pieces on either end of the stoa.

Worth seeing if wandering through Tiergarten or even if near the Brandenburg Gate.

Location: Tiergarten. Close to Brenderburg gate and Reichstag.

Vosit Duration: 45 Minutes.

Erected in the British sector of Berlin by the Soviet Union to commemorate its 80 000 soldiers died during the Battle of Berlin between April and May 1945.
The memorial takes the form of a curved stoa topped by a large bronze statue of a Soviet soldier. The marble
built in came from destroyed government buildings. At the back of the columns exist the names of the the soldiers burried there since this memorial is also a burial site of more than 2,000 fallen Soviet soldiers.

In front sides of this memorial you will notice the T-34/36 tank and ML Howitzer.

Other Russian war memorials exists in Berlin. Treptower Park memorial is not to be missed.

Allowing your mind to remember all you have heard and read about the atrocities perpetrated on human beings, whatever their nationality, could prove to be a depressing aspect of a visit to this memorial. That is all it is, a memorial to a lot of soldiers who died doing what they believed was right. It is an impressive monument to those who died.

From a sightseeing perspective, this monument is only a few minutes’ walk between the Brandenburg gate and the Victory column, and it is worth seeing.

Architecturally quite impressive, it is rather interesting to discover. Its intimidating towering statue beckons you to reflect on the reason for its existence and forces you to feel slightly uncomfortable and reflective. It’s bizarre, but I couldn’t help but to stop and think while under the crushing gaze of this monument.

I understand the moral and ethical issues brought up by this monument’s existence, but there are other places for that discussion…

A very grand monument in the middle of the Tiergarten, Unfortunately the monument was undergoing vital restoration at the time of our visit, but still worth going to see it.

I visited the Soviet Memorial Tiergarten in December 2019. I had also visited it in August 2018. The Soviet Memorial Tiergarten is worth a visit and it is a good photo opportunity. It is a memorial to all the Russian soldiers who died during the Battle of Berlin in 1945. Since I am fluent in Russian, I enjoyed reading the various inscriptions in Russian on various sections of the memorial.

Within walking distance from Reichstag. Great scenery and surroundings. Potentially good place to take photos if it's not raining.

As a previous review has mentioned, this is a fitting tribute to those who died during the conflict and war.

Irrespective of nationality there are those who lost their lives it's a place to reflect.
