Wannsee is a lake complex in the western suburbs of Berlin. There are two itineraries you could put it on your list to visit.
First is if going to Potsdam it's right on the way, just exit at Wannsee station (several S Bahn lines go there).
The other one is if you're exploring the western highlights such as the Chralottenburg castle, Olympia stadium, Platform 17 etc.
In any case for any of the above itineraries count on entire day.
The lake is a summer beach retreat, there's a sandy beach and many private boats and yachts docked, as well regular sightseeing tour boats, many cafes, eateries and restaurants as well.
Apart from the nice and fun side, the Villa Wannsee in vicinity puts a shade on this place. It's a monster house, now a museum/memorial, where the final solution was mastermind by the Nazis.

Again, one of the wonders of Berlin is this nature that surrounds the city & is within the City. I have not been to any City remotely similar.
Any developing Nation can take valuable lessons from this place.
This lake is so natural & beautiful & so close, no wonder that most Berliners are there for the weekend getting their kit off!
Enjoy!

Nice beach resort close to Berlin City. Easy to get by S-Bahn to Nikolassee station and possibly bus from the station to the beach bath - alternatively you can walk the cosy ride of 1,100 meters from the station.
At Strandbadet there are dressing rooms, toilets and places to buy snacks and food. It is possible to rent sun loungers, beach chairs and umbrellas. There are lifeguards on the beach.
Adults must remember ID as shown at the entrance (why do I not know, but it is annoying to stand at the entrance and not have it with:-)

The beautiful Wannsee is located on the edge of Berlin, surrounded by greenery and close to Postdam. For many Berliners a trip on a sunny day because the possibilities are numerous: trains, boat trips, sailing, by bus
M114 (every 5m)) from Bhf Wannsee to Haus der Wannsee Konferenz and Miebermann Villa, by bus to the Pfaueninsel, ferry to Kladow, etc. A completely different Berlin than busy Mitte.

Nice trip to do with family. Around 1,5 h with on board service . Nice captain telling stories about the lake and the people who had lived there. Great trip for one half day ...

Much larger than I expected. Many yachts and smaller sailing boats. Boats run to a timetable from near the entrance across the lake. Lots of birds to see. Plenty of places for coffee and meals or snacks. Swimmming or some nice walks in the suurounding woods

Take a few hours of freedom from the city and visit Wannsee - easiest way to get there by train S1 or S7. You can visit the Villa Wannsee (built 1914-1915) [where on 20 January 1942, senior Nazi officials met to plan the Final Solution to the" Jewish Question "- the extermination of the Jews of Europe] , Or the home of a Jewish painter Max Liebermann nearby, wander the streets and along the banks of the lake and get some fresh air.
On the way back is highly recommended not to go by train, but to take bus No. 218 )the stop is just in front of the train station), the bus travels through the woods and hills, at a turtle speed but you can enjoy more of the way.
The bus final stop is at Theodor Heuss-Platz U-Bahn at Berlin and from the it is possible to reach anywhere in the city.

The Large House in Wansee a place of villainy and hatred toward any thought by the Nazi Party to warrant death
The guides are very frank and not at all evasive regarding the outrageous evil planned in this place
It is hard to imagine the callous inhumanity of planning out the decimation of European Jewry
You will learn the brutal history of the alleged Reich with all its hatred and inhuman indifference of the right to life of millions of folk who were gathered without mercy and murdered without trial or any due process by a narrow minded hateful ego driven military power
When you see Wansee life will look at you with new eyes.

Originally I went out to Wansee in search of the beach on a hot day, but as it turned out the beach was rather more difficult to find than I was led to believe.
After looking at the views for a while and the beautiful statues and architecture in the area, I became a bit fed up of the harbour area.
It's worth noting that there's a toilet facility here, but it's not very good at all... and you have to pay to get in (50 Eurocents) ...
If you can, then I STRONGLY advise walking the short way back up the slope to the Wansee U-bahn station and going to the toilet there instead.
The Wansee U-bahn toilet is absolutely incredible, and personally I feel that it ought to have a TripAdvisor entry all of its own.
I have never seen a toilet like it in my life, as it's like a combination of a toilet (a good well-maintained one) and some kind of small and slightly eccentric art exhibition. There are , various objects and pictures on display, as well as several boards which people can write comments on. All sorts of people had been remarking that the toilet was a joy to use and be in. It was easily the most charming toilet I've been to in Berlin (if not ever) and I was happy to give a tip to the man who cleans the place.
Other than going for the views, a peaceful environment, and as a bonus to enjoy the U-bahn toilet, I also went on a nice long boat tour while I was in Wansee.
It was about an hour and a half long, and went around a big island (called the round island... I think?). The ticket price was reduced because I had a Berlin Welcome Card, and I thought it was good value for money for a very pleasant and relaxing ride on the touring boat.
The ride was smooth and picturesque with great photo opportunities.
There were drinks and small food items served on board, along with a live tour guide talking about all sorts of things (only in fairly complex German, unfortunately for me as I couldn't understand him) ... the whole tour was of good quality, and of a good length.
This is the first boat tour which I have ever been on, and I very much enjoyed my time on the water. It was a pleasant, slow paced and relaxing way to spend an early evening and check out some great views which you'd never see otherwise.

Take the train to Wannsee (15 minutes by main line express, 25 minutes on the S-Bahn) and you are within 200 metres walk of one of Berlin's most exclusive suburban areas around the edges of the Wannsee (Wann lake). Plenty of woodland walks, boat trips and places to eat and drink. On a sunny day, simply glorious!

is May a good time of the year to visit the Wannsee lake?
Written March 27, 2018
I went in early August last year and it was a very hot day. I can only imagine that May would be one of the best months weather wise to visit (assuming the sun does come out).
Written March 28, 2018
